Once again a wonderful example of a beautiful woman sitting in the forest dressed to the nines, from the fabulous collection meteuropeanpaintings And I love it. Especially as I love sitting on a bench in city parks myself (But dressed much more simply with slightly fewer frills 😂) What I really like about this portrait is that everything is one. Her dress, herself, everything is painted so fluidly, like the surrounding nature. You even think that her hair blends in with the trees. Of course, this brings with it the risk that everything seems a bit muddy, especially because the painter has chosen to paint her in a very melancholic, introverted pose. But if you look closely, her frills have these little edges. Kind of geometric. This gives a much needed contrast. So I extended these ruffles and especially emphasized the edgy thing about them. No British royal post today as I tend to suffer from media overdose. But I would like to show a work whose original is in metamericanwing and which I recently had the pleasure of visiting. You can imagine that it is something very special for me when I see the works that I get so close to through my work in a museum, like for real. Seeing a "friend" in the museum makes my heart leap. At the Metropolitan Museum, I literally said "hello" out loud, which other visitors probably found a bit strange. So I'm showing this bust, an example of a 19th-century representation that refers to classical archetypes from ancient times and thus becomes timelessly beautiful. I love these Renaissance portraits, which are completely by themselves in a concentrated way. Here you notice that she has completely internalized her position as a lady of the upper class. True, there are these superb fabrics, her jewelry, but still she's looking past us, half at the horizon, half into herself. She has this natural elegance without needing to shout her position out loud. This is certainly also due to the calm colors Bellini has chosen for this portrait. All very much in balance. I really like her cap, with the geometric pattern, and it made me think of the elegant signature patterns of Italian fashion houses. They also have this combination of brown and ochre fields and breathe a timeless elegance. That's why I decided to continue this pattern, to point to the different textures and to give her a certain contemporary edginess, an extravagance. There’s no other way to put it: many of the originals I work with are from an aristocratic background. And I often come across portraits that send out this kind of self-assured, proud, but also somehow posh attitude. If we were mean, we could interpret this as elitist arrogance based on inherited privileges. But, well, we’re not mean, we’re open and friendly 😜 And we have to keep in mind that the painted portraits are not spontaneous shots, but deliberately placed advertising messages of one’s own position. This young man actually looks quite likeable, but of course his portrait is there to show the opulence of his class. And this painting does that very well. But I took the liberty of emphasizing this opulence with a Chanel-esque necklace made from the buttons of his precious outfit. I'm currently preparing my next solo exhibition called: RUFF HOOD at jamesfreemangallery in London (Dear friends in London: save the date: June 15th, I want to see you all!) So it makes sense to show one of my beloved ruff works. And when people ask me, how do you choose my originals, I have to say, how could I not choose her, for example? She really does seem to speak directly to me. Something about her look fascinates me. Is it a certain mischievousness? Self-consciousness? Irony? Perhaps a mixture of all of these. What do you think? And if you look at a lot of historical portraits, this collar from the golden Dutch age may somehow feel normal. But honestly...it's not. It's huge, and that subtle shimmering embroidery on her robe, I love it. I have tried to emphasize all this by building this huge tower out of her ruff, focusing on her gaze. No British royal post today as I tend to suffer from media overdose. But I would like to show a work whose original is in metamericanwing and which I recently had the pleasure of visiting. You can imagine that it is something very special for me when I see the works that I get so close to through my work in a museum, like for real. Seeing a "friend" in the museum makes my heart leap. At the Metropolitan Museum, I literally said "hello" out loud, which other visitors probably found a bit strange. So I'm showing this bust, an example of a 19th-century representation that refers to classical archetypes from ancient times and thus becomes timelessly beautiful. There are various approaches for me to start a work. Sometimes I just react to the painting and I don't need the story of the sitter, but sometimes the life story is so important that it also becomes important in my work. This amazing portrait shows Bianca Maria Sforza, who grew up in a noble family where no one cared about her education, only to be "sold" as a wife to an emperor (who was not even present at the wedding) as part of political tactics. Her husband then found her boring, stupid and ignored her, whereupon she consoled herself with splendid court life, which did not make her life any happier. To tell a long story very briefly. When you read something like this today, you think: she didn't have a single chance. So I first gave her a helmet to protect her at least a little and wrapped her precious jewelry around her like a cosmos of her own, surrounding her but also constricting her. I love these Renaissance portraits, which are completely by themselves in a concentrated way. Here you notice that she has completely internalized her position as a lady of the upper class. True, there are these superb fabrics, her jewelry, but still she's looking past us, half at the horizon, half into herself. She has this natural elegance without needing to shout her position out loud. This is certainly also due to the calm colors Bellini has chosen for this portrait. All very much in balance. I really like her cap, with the geometric pattern, and it made me think of the elegant signature patterns of Italian fashion houses. They also have this combination of brown and ochre fields and breathe a timeless elegance. That's why I decided to continue this pattern, to point to the different textures and to give her a certain contemporary edginess, an extravagance.
