I took a chance on these, as I hadn’t observed the collection site earlier in the season to see if the surrounding male trees had flowered (ginkgoes don’t flower until they’re about 20 years old). Two stages of pine cones. I was so excited to find these on a walk a little while ago. Female pine cones are the cones with hard shells and male pinecones are much smaller and soft - the male cones produce pollen to fertilise female cones. The process of a pinecone maturing, being fertilised and dropping to the ground to release it's seeds is an incredible journey! Taking two to three years in total! The dark greyish-brown bark and curved leaves of the Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii). This species can be found in rainforests from New South Wales to Queensland. Its most favourable growing conditions occur in south-east Queensland. A. cunninghamii is a tall tree that can reach a height of 50 m. The leaves overlap each other in sequences and are sharply angled (keeled) along the midrib. Juvenile leaves tend to be needle-like. Each leaf is approximately 8 mm long. A. cunninghamii was named after botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham who made remarks on the many mature stands of Hoop Pines that penetrated the canopy throughout the Brisbane area in the early 1800's. Unfortunately, many of the Hoop Pine stands were cleared for timber use. The genus Araucaria is one of three genera that make up the Araucariaceae family. Challenge - Besondere Pflanze Dieser Palmfarn stammt aus Griechenland und ist im Wohnwagen meiner Eltern mit nach Deutschland gereist. Ich liebe seinen regelmäßigen Wuchs und die breiten Wedel. Zum Sonnenbaden stelle ich ihn an windstillen Tagen auf den Balkon, so wie auf den ersten beiden Fotos zu sehen, oder ich schiebe ihn an die offene Tür. Wenn er wie hier eine neue Reihe Wedel bekommt, achte ich besonders darauf, ihn nicht zu drehen, sonst wachsen die in alle Richtungen. Er mag halt seine Gewohnheiten. Diese Pflanze ist ganz besonders für mich, weil sie mich schon so lange begleitet (ist aber nicht meine älteste Pflanze 😉) und mir dabei so viel Freude gemacht hat und macht. Welwitschia mirabilis... - Onyanga in the Otjiherero language which translates as "onion" in reference to the cones (Welwitschia is a Gymnosperm) which are used as food. - !kharos in the Khoisan language. - This incredibly resilient organism is often the dominant woody plant in its range limited to gravel plains of the northern and central Namib desert. Two evergreen leaves (which split giving the impression of multiple leaves) that are tough as leather continue growing from the woody base of the plant throughout its lifetime, which can be millenia, reaching lengths of over 10 feet. The leaves are generally only food for sucking insects, but may be browsed by larger mammals in times of drought. - Welwitschia is genetically unique. It is not only the sole species of the genus, nor family, but is classified as the only species in the entire order - Welwitschiales. It is only distantly related to the genera Gnetum and Ephedra, the three genera making up the totality of the division Gnetophyta. - Welwitschia is dioecous. This week we will be taking a look at Encephalartos villosus, a cycad species native to South Africa where it has a wide range and was first described back in 1867. Encephalartos villosus has a subterranean trunk that averages 30cm tall by 20cm in diameter but will produce suckers with age, eventually growing an impressive canopy. Although it is sometimes considered a smaller species due to its lack of exposed trunk, its glossy, dark green leaves can reach lengths of up to 3 meters long with an arching appearance while the younger leaves remain erect. These leaves have sharp, lanceolate leaflets that shrink as they near the base, eventually ending in spines with a tomentose petiole. The reproductive cones of E. villosus are similar in size, with the pollen cones averaging 60cm long by 10cm wide and the seed bearing cones being closer to 40cm long and 14cm wide. Though their sizes aren’t too different both their shape and color are, with pollen cones being thin and cylindrical with a pale yellow green color whereas the seed cones are more barrel in shape with a bright yellow color. E. villosus’s natural habitat is similar to that of South Florida with hot, rainy summers and cool, dryer winters which is made more evident but the health of the established population here at Montgomery that were planted back in 1997. Although these just look like some normal red fruits, they had been a great mystery for botanists for decades. This plant, Gnetum gnemon, was thought to be the living “link” between flowering & non flowering plants, because various features of Gnetum can be found both in flowering and non flowering plants, such as those red “fruits”. Fruits are products of flowers, which is a feature unique to flowering plants. However, molecular data now confirmed that Gnetum is not the sister of all flowering plants, and it in fact is very closely related to many conifer trees such as pine trees. Those red “fruits” are not the product of flowers, because Gnetum does not make flowers to start with! Have you ever seen the "fruits" of the yew plum pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus)? Whereas they look very fruit-like, they are definitely not fruit in the strictest sense. Fruits arise from the ovary of a flowering plant whereas these structures have a completely different origin. The yew plum pine is a gymnosperm and this is a really interesting case of natural selection favoring an animal dispersal syndrome. After the female cone is fertilized, a cone scale will begin to swell and change color until the reach this berry-like appearance. As you might imagine, these swollen cone scales are food for birds, which disperse the attached seed in their droppings. This species is native to parts of Japan and China.

Eumaeus atala, the Atala! This beautiful butterfly is only found in Florida in the United States, but also Cuba, the Bahamas and some other Caribbean islands. It was thought to be extinct in the US for a few decades until it was rediscovered on a barrier island near Miami. How it came to be so rare is an all too familiar story and lesson in exploitation of natural resources. The only native host plant for this species is the coontie (Zamia integrifolia), the only cycad native to the United States. This cycad has been a staple food for indigenous people in south Florida for thousands of years. Even though it is very poisonous, it can be detoxified through a rigorous process of grinding, soaking, rinsing, fermenting and drying the roots to produce a high quality, edible starch. In the 1800s this process was industrialized and mills popped up in Florida to mass produce what was marketed as “Florida Arrowroot” and the starch was then sold to locals, the US Army and to Europe. These mills relied entirely on plants dug up from the wild. So completely predictably and unsurprisingly wild coontie populations collapsed in Florida by the early 1900s, taking with them all animals that relied on them like the Atala butterfly. The recovery of this species in Florida though, is a great story of hope and the benefits of growing locally native plants where you live. The coontie has become a popular native ornamental plant in Florida, as it is a beautiful, hardy tropical looking cycad. The abundance of these on the urban and suburban landscape as well as some other related, though not native cycads, has given this butterfly large food sources, and because the butterfly accumulates the carcinogenic and neurotoxic chemical cycasin that it gets from eating its host plants, it is rarely eaten by predators. This has allowed the species to bounce back from extinction and it is now thriving everywhere from the pine rocklands of the Everglades to downtown Miami! Pleased to have germinated these seeds of the endangered Tasmanian conifer Athrotaxis selaginoides - King Billy Pine. You can see the white stomatal bands on the top side of the true leaves.
