IT’S PERSONAL I've lived in Marin County for several decades. It's one of my happy places, and I never take any of its beauty for granted. It's paradise. Early one evening while I was walking my dogs up the hillside behind my house, I saw these amazing clouds swirling around Mount Tamalpais. The dogs and I rushed back to get the Hasselblad and 30 minutes later, we were on the way back to the house to process the film so I could make a print. I made the Moon on the Water photograph at Rodeo Beach on the Marin Headlands. It could be an ocean at night anywhere in the world but I love the fact that it’s in my back yard. Phacelia, also known as scorpionweed, is a genus of about 200 species in the borage family. It’s native to both North and South America, but is particularly diverse in California, with over 90 species recorded in the state. When we returned from Death Valley with yet another phacelia species logged in iNaturalist, we wrote “another trip, another phacelia”. But it turns out that even a short jaunt can result in a lifer; we found this divaricate phacelia on Mount Tam, only 20 miles from home. Also known as trailing phacelia, Phacelia divaricata is endemic to California, where it grows in the coastal hills and mountain ranges around the San Francusco Bay. It comes in both erect and decumbent (low, spreading) forms, and thrives in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands and chaparral. We found this plant on a barren serpentine outcropping, growing along the ground. Although we’ve never seen divaricate phacelia here in the East Bay, iNat shows observations on Mount Diablo and Mission Peak. #hike6 of my #52hikechallenge2024: ▪️Mount Tamalpais is about 30 minutes north of San Francisco and it is one of my favorite places to visit in the Bay Area! ▪️There are a mixture of sights to see - redwood forests, open grasslands and of course the Pacific Ocean! ▪️There are plenty of trails to explore here, but most of the hikes are on the moderate/moderately hard/hard side according to AllTrails. I’d advise having a couple of simpler hikes under your belt first before exploring this state park. Trail Stats 🥾Trails Hiked: Bolinas Ridge, Cataract and Old Mine 🥾Trail Length: 5.6 miles 🥾This is a loop with gradual inclines which is great news for the knees. I did not need to use trekking poles. 🥾During the rainy season you will see numerous waterfalls - you will also have to traverse through small streams to continue on this loop. I would advise wearing trail runners/hiking shoes/boots that are waterproof. Also an extra pair of socks would be nice to have. 🚗 Parking: There is parking scattered throughout the area, but I tend to park at the Pantoll Campground for easier access to the trails. On the weekends, it is highly advised to arrive early (the park opens at 7am) because the parking lots fill up fast! ⚠️There is a fee to park at the East Peak, Bootjack and Pantoll parking lot. We’re seeing a lot of posts about the cool mushrooms folks are finding out there on the trail. One of our favorite finds in recent weeks was this western cauliflower mushroom we spotted on Mount Tamalpais. Native to western North America, these impressive fungi are found at the base of conifers, often Douglas firs, growing on the trees’ dead and dying roots. Like their namesakes, cauliflower mushrooms are a choice edible. They’re considered “beginner mushrooms” because they’re easy to identify and unlikely to be confused with anything toxic. Steep Ravine Trail, Mount Tamalpais State Park. Appropriately named because it is pretty steep, but there is ample beauty to distract you. This was from 9/3 just days before I got whacked by Covid. It took me a while to kick it, and even now at times I wonder if I have long Covid so I’m overly cautious about getting out for hikes in inclement weather or if I’m even slightly off. But at least I’m back to the gym so that gives me relief and an outlet for exercise. With the first several days of rain in early fall, the ground became more saturated but the creeks remained mostly at a quiet murmur. My guess is that the trees were thirsty and the ground was parched and most of the water just got soaked right up. But with cooler weather and the last round of rain yesterday and today, the creeks are just starting to swell and cascade down the hillside toward the reservoirs, which are also noticeably rising. But with rains and saturated soil comes erosion and a few trees have fallen along the trail, one taking out a bridge on Tucker Trail where it connects with Bill Williams Trail. As I mentioned recently in another post, waking up early to start a run in the dark and cold can be emotionally challenging. But in addition to the fact that I love how I feel after a run, the sense rejuvenation I get from moving through beautiful landscapes, which I could get even if I started my runs later in the morning, the one thing I couldn’t get is the ability to see the intensely detailed world through the focused lens only offered by limited light. Seeing and taking pictures during the darkest hours blocks out surrounding distraction and narrows one’s attention on an object such that you see it more vividly and in greater detail than you would otherwise. After a few weeks of telling myself I would get to it later, I finally decided to leave the Tam Watershed behind last weekend and explore Baltimore Canyon and King Mountain up above Kentfield and Larkspur. Dark and moody and lush, it was another reminder of just how endlessly impressive the Marin trail network is.
