Hike #25 in Castlewood Canyon State Park, May 17th. We hiked 4-1/2 miles on the Creek Bottom and Rimrock Trails loop. Hiking and currently reading: we just got back from camping, and I got a lot of reading in: finished one book and got half way through the next. We saw some cool rocks in the distance and thought we would try to find the way to the top. There was no trail, so this was mostly a scramble, but we saw some great hoodoos and had a spectacular view from the top of the ridge. Hike 19/52, 2.4 miles, near Paliza campground. I’m currently reading Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, a retelling of Antigone, but set in our time in London, Massachusetts, and the Middle East. It’s about a family torn apart by betrayal and lies, and the pull of Islamic extremism versus the desire to conform to British society. I cannot put it down. Hike 5/52 | 52 Hike Challenge Today’s Trail: Ice Age Trail, Dunes Segment (Aurora side), Two Rivers 55 degrees, blue skies and golden sunshine I pulled into the parking lot by the trailhead and “Seasons” by Chris Cornell came on the radio. A perfect song for today, the anniversary of his death in 2017, and the first time I’ve hiked this familiar trail in this season. As I hiked, I noticed many things I’ve never seen here before, like the gigantic lilac bushes, apple blossoms, the new growth on the pines (these buds are called candles but to me it looks like they are giving the world the finger 🖕). And I thought a lot about Chris Cornell and the impact he had on the world—and continues to have, years after we lost him. I only saw Chris perform live one time, with Soundgarden at Lollapalooza in 1992. My friend and I had gotten separated from our other friends and she had passed out (at like 5 pm). So I sat next to her in the grass, close to the stage, and was mesmerized by him and the music. We meant to see him again but always put it off “until next time.” But there won’t always be a next time. Life is short. Buy the concert tickets. Do the thing that you’re meant to do, be the person you are meant to be. Have the impact on the world that you’re meant to have. Don’t be left behind as the seasons roll on by. Movement is medicine... Reflections are transcendent. Sunsets and golden light are a reminder. The love of the simple things helps your heart to see more. Capture more. Find joy, more. Slow down. And, being the one that encourages all these things in others, becomes easier. This was such a lovely Mother's Day hike - a much needed time to bring my own Mother into my world a bit. She said yes. I held onto a moment of my Mom caught with my Step-dad. These two felt what creation inspires in many moments...love. Their hand in hand photo is one I'm keeping forever in my mind and my heart. It was my hike number 2 in one day - She said yes to her 1st this year, and she asked me to teach her new things along the way, and it gave her life in the same. I held her hand the last half mile of 3. This led me into my 21st hike of 52 in this year's challenge. The movement, especially when it's outdoors, is medicine.

Hike #21: ✅ Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castles 🥾 We toured these STUNNING castles today! 🏰 I tracked on my @garmin watch for the walks to/from the castles, but paused the watch during the tours. We weren’t allowed to take photos inside the castles but WOW they were so cool. The walk up to Neuschwanstein was pretty much straight up hill the whole way. Gain 🥾 2.9 Mi | 4.6 Km 🗓️ April 6, 2024 Day 8 of 9 🅷🅸🅺🅴: 19 of 2024 Wowzers!! Even better than the photos I’ve seen. Another beautiful mountain checked off my bucket-list! But… let’s back-up a bit. It’s all about the journey they say! It’s another early pick-up from our hotel. At this point it feels natural and I’m still excited from visiting Machu Picchu. We said good-bye to Wilo and thanked him for keeping us safe on the Salkantay Trail, and showing us how beautiful Peru is. Our new guide, Henry, picked us up at 4am for a 3 hr drive to Rainbow Mountain. I already miss our group - but it’s time for a new adventure. Per usual we stopped for breakfast before climbing Rainbow Mtn and indulged in some yummy Coca Tea (I can’t get enough of it). Our ride up was beautiful and scenic. Once again we opted for a horse ride to the base of Rainbow Mountain, we would have to climb by foot the steepest section to the summit. And yes, I fell off the horse AGAIN but this time getting on 🤣. Horses are just not my thing but I was grateful it was even an option. Altitude hiking is very taxing on the body but so rewarding. It’s one step in front of the other, pressure breathing, and believing you can. We did it!! We’re standing at 16,530 feet above sea level! Words cannot express the feeling of being able to see this natural phenomenon. A mountain covered in different colors caused by different minerals. I’m here, we’re here! A trip of a lifetime - an adventure I’ll alway cherish, and embrace the bonds we’ve made with Peru and each other. Peru, I’ve left a piece of my heart with you.
It felt real good to get out for an actual hike last weekend! #29029training has been a lot of gym time lately coupled with being sick and our girls’ activities, well… it’s been a bit since my last hike. New for this year, I’m trying out sun shirts. The idea of hiking in long sleeves in the summer just sounds hot and suffocating, but I’m kinda liking the idea of sun protection with clothes. Not sure if it’s my mind getting used to this idea or if this REI Sahara sun shirt really made me hot, but it was quite uncomfortable. Next up I think I’ll try a Columbia PFG sun hoodie.
