Hike 20 was in El Scorpion Canyon Park in LA county. We hiked up to the Cave of Munits. Definitely learned a lot on this trip. Each National Park operates differently. For example the Mojave, is diapered camping and even though you have first come first serve sights at Joshua Tree NPS you need to show up find an empty site (one without the clipped tag and no items on it) hold the spot with your gear and then head over to the nearest entrance and let them know what spot you claimed and pay the nightly fee and then you clip the paper they hand you to your site post. This was the longest it’s ever taken me to hike a mile but also the most incredible mile I’ve ever hiked. I got to experience it through the eyes of a toddler and really appreciate the nature around me. Had we gone at our normal pace I wouldn’t have noticed the frogs croaking down the river, the butterfly sitting on a rock, the caterpillar barely making it out of the creek, or the wild flowers growing along the mountain side. Same time last year, I did a solo hike attempting to reach Devils Gulch. It was also the same time a hiker died on this trail. I never made it to Devils Gulch, the flow was so strong, and hiking alone wasn’t looking good since I didn’t carry any rope at the time. This time around, the flow wasn’t as bad as last year, but was still strong enough to push you, you think it might be a simple crossing, but can definitely surprise you and sweep you off your feet. Having my friends with me and carrying some rope, that definitely help us successfully cross certain sections where no rope exist. Could you have pass without rope? Maybe, but there were parts where it look calm, but the moment you step in that area the current had a lot of force. So why risk it, live to hike another day, this is not a beginner hike, and I don’t suggest going alone unless you know what you’re doing. Especially when hiking solo: • Make sure your phone is fully charged! Taking videos and using apps are power-intensive. • If you’re in snake territory, use a walking stick and place it with a thud with each step. The vibrations will help scare off snakes. • Wear long pants to protect you from snakes, poison oak, sunburn, thorn bushes and all sorts of abrasions if you get lost like I did! • If AllTrails lists a hike as “hard,” don’t underestimate it! For the final day of National Volunteer Week, we are highlighting a member who joined AMRT in 2002, and for more than 20 years on the team has been an inspiration and role model to many. Awarded Mountaineer of the Year multiple times by her team mates, this team would not be what it is today without the dedication and commitment of Alexia Joens. Like so many members, Alexia enjoys all things outdoors, including camping, backpacking, hiking, snowboarding, and canyoneering. But what she loves the most is trail running. Today, for National Volunteer Week, we will be featuring a member who served AMRT for more than 50 years. Charles "Chuck" Ballard joined in 1962, at the age of 36 and remained an active member well into his 80's. While serving on the rescue team, Chuck retired from his job as a branch manager with Bank of America, and enrolled in school to become a Registered Nurse. At the age of 62, he began a new career at Huntington Memorial Hospital in the pediatric unit.
