Rest of day twenty four Pinhoti trail. Stopped at Oakey mountain shelter for lunch met Dave and his dog Scout who were out doing some trail maintenance. We talked for awhile then on to camp. Walked on part of the rails to trails path and met a bicyclist and talked with him I just love meeting people on the trails on the Pinhoti you can literally be alone for days and when you see someone it’s almost a surprise ,anyway had to say goodbye we were looking for a stealth site and weren’t sure where it was so needed to get going. 📍 Scout Cave Trail, Snow Canyon State Park, Utah This is a 5.6 mile out and back trail that takes you through lava flow fields, stream beds and sandstone rocks. It’s a fun, beautiful trail with great views throughout and a cool cave at the end. Wear hiking shoes so you can manage the lava rocks with no problems! Moderate difficulty. When we reached the cave there were a bunch of teenagers being apprehended by a ranger. Turns out they camped overnight & built a fire inside the cave (both not allowed). They also had music, speakers, skateboards 😳 ☝️ When visiting state parks and national parks, it’s everyone’s responsibility to know what you can and cannot do and comply. Ignorance is not an excuse. Had Windy Joe Mountain all to myself 🏔️😇 3am wake up, 6am trailhead start. I decided that since it was a Friday on a long weekend, to get a head start on the highway & get waaay ahead of the pack.. It was snowing the entire time, the sun would peak thru with breaks so I pushed on🌨️ I heard my first tree come down somewhere above me on the trail - quite unnerving and became unsure of my decision to keep going. Nothing moved after a few seconds of standing there in silence but became super aware of the amount of trees fallen in the area and hiked with caution. Yellow Glacier Lilies are in full force and cover most of the trail and peak 🌼 Had the entire fire tower to myself for a fancy ramen breakfast and a chance to get out of the snow. The @ultratrailaustralia congrats continue! Caz achieved an incredible set of back-to-back runs. Tackling the #uta11 on Thursday and following it up with the #uta22 on Friday. Caz is an experienced trail runner, with several UTA50s and 100s under her belt, but it's been a while since she last took on this pic and demanding race. She approached the build with care, consistency, determination and a very uplifting sense of humour. She and another Slowly Rosie sent me a happy pic from the trail, and updates from the course. Caz's goal was to complete these back-to-back runs without becoming 'defeated' and having enough power in the tank to get up the stairs and over the finish line with a smile. And she achieved this in spades! Well done Caz and ALL the Slowlies. I know that this race was about more than the miles on the watch. It was about achieving something new, something hard, about farewelling an older versoin of ourselves and embracing something big, scary and incredible. Last Friday was absolutely one of the wildest nights of my life. I’ve spent the last year kind of keeping track of when there would be a chance to see the aurora, so when I saw the many alerts last Friday go off during the day, I thought about going out to see it. It took me until 7:00pm to officially decide that I need to nix my Saturday hiking plans to go hunting for the aurora instead. Expecting many people to out, I drove to my location before the sunset and camped out with my gear. And then I spent a long time just sitting and waiting while more and more people came. And then…it started to become slightly visible. Which was great, but not *thrilling*. But suddenly, the sky lit up like a great spotlight was shown on it, and it exploded into color. My heart completely stopped and I felt this huge well of emotion come up in me. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. I was very nearly in tears. It is moments like these that convince me there is a God above who delights in our joy. I’ve seen the aurora before—this is certainly not the first time for me. But I’ve never seen it completely surround me and contain so much color. I was grateful that I got myself out the door to a darker area, but was kicking myself that I didn’t go further out to get some pics of the aurora with the mountains.
