🦌🐺🦆Wildlife Sanctuary Hike 8/52 | 52 Hike Challenge Today’s Trail: Woodchuck Trail, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, Green Bay, WI 56 degrees, blue skies and golden sunshine Absolutely lovely. Another place I can’t believe I haven’t been to before this. I loved every minute of it and was inspired with ideas for the WIP. Plus I got to see some deer and wolves in their sanctuaries—I have a crappy video of the wolves howling that I may post later. Luckily I went early enough that I got out of there before the hordes of schoolchildren on field trips took over the trails. I can’t wait to go back and check out some of the other areas and the coyotes. 🎉FIFTY-TWO🎉 Hike 52/52 52 Hike Challenge Today’s Trail: My Local, Lower Schuette Park, Manitowoc, WI 34 degrees. Blue skies and golden sunshine. I wanted to go somewhere really special for hike 52, drive somewhere memorable with lovely vistas and hike for a long time. And I wanted to go on National Hiking Day. My schedule and my body had other ideas. This morning, I dragged myself out of bed and headed down the street to my Local, which is where I began the 52 Hike Challenge and my year of friluftsliv on January 1 (when it was 3 degrees warmer! 😱). Turns out it was pretty special after all. 🥾There were six other people on the trail and four dogs, including one named Tank who was a big sweetheart. (That’s a lot of people in my experience.) 🥾I feel sort of miserable with a cold and sore throat so I’m proud of myself for getting out on the trail. The fresh air was 👍. 🥾November is the worst month for a lot of reasons. The bright sunshine and crisp air helped a little. 🥾There’s plenty of year left for more hikes. Winter is coming, as they say. I was so grateful for today’s sunshine, though, that I had to hit the trail and add another hike to my Mammoth Hike Challenge total. I’ll probably go tomorrow, too. 🦣 Lower Schuette looks much different from last week, leaves dropped and colors faded. I did find a few wildflowers hanging on. Same, wildflowers, same. It’s been eleven days since I’ve gotten out on the trail, thanks to life and work. But actually, no thank you, WORK. I’m a better human when I get to spend time outdoors. Hike 34/52 - 52 Hike Challenge Today’s Trail: Willow Trail and Goldenrod Loop, Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve, Two Rivers, WI 58 degrees, blue skies, golden sunshine When I visited here in early August, this trail was closed near the end because of a paper wasp nest at the river viewing platform. Today I was able to hike to the end of the trail—and learn why it’s called Willow Trail. That’s a big tree. It must be school field trip day because there were a lot of interesting things placed along the trail. Lucky kids to have a place like this. Gorgeous morning. I’m lucky, too. ✨Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse✨ Hike 14/52 | 7/26 52 Hike Challenge | August Hiking Challenge Today’s Trail: Lighthouse Park, 68 degrees and breezy. Blue skies, golden sunshine. I’d already decided to stay in town and go to the lighthouse for my hike today when I received an email with this subject: 10 things you may not know about Manitowoc’s iconic breakwater lighthouse. Turns out today is National Lighthouse Day, so it was the perfect day to do this. There’s a small beach here and the marina and the lighthouse, of course. ✨Honor Your Energy✨ Last night around midnight, I was making final preparations for an event I’d been planning for several weeks and decided, for a number of reasons, that it wasn’t going to work for me and my time could be better spent elsewhere. I feel zero guilt. I’ve been doing some deep work to determine the best ways to focus and honor my creative energy. This event wasn’t it. Plus, logistically, it was going to be a challenge with everything else going on… and then, after my hike, the check engine light came on in my husband’s truck, which is the only vehicle I have right now. Good decision. Good decision. Hike 13/52 | 6/26 52 Hike Challenge | August Hiking Challenge Today’s Trail: Fawn Ridge at Neshota Park, Denmark, WI 74 degrees, blue skies, golden sunshine My dental hygienist told me about this park yesterday and I thought, why not? There are four trails here of increasing difficulty and I’ve decided to do them all this month. I loved this park. It’s absolutely gorgeous and this hike was exactly what I needed: energizing and restorative, a reclamation of sorts. And I saw a gigantic slate-blue water bird, which I have not yet identified with my Google search. I can’t wait to go back. Hike 11/52 | 4/26 52 Hike Challenge | August Hiking Challenge Today’s trail: Ice Age Trail (and surrounding area), Point Beach Segment, Point Beach State Forest, Two Rivers 82 degrees; heat index 87 Blue skies, golden sunshine Cooler at the lake… is relative. I drove up the shore a bit for a slight drop in temperature and chose a trail that I thought would be a bit more wooded; it turned out to be about 50/50 wooded and full-sun dunes. The beach here is quiet and lovely. Now the puppies and I are enjoying a mild thunderstorm and a cup of coffee before I go back to tackling the to-do list. Tomorrow my schedule allows an early morning hike before it gets too hot. Today’s Trail: Vetter Trail and Plateau Loop, Camp Vits Park, with my friend Jennifer. Holy smokes, what a way to begin. This trail has everything: lots of hills, roots, steep cliffs, narrow paths, fallen trees, deep ravines, dry creek beds, poison ivy, and a handful of dogs. ✨FRILUFTSLIV✨ Friluftsliv. That’s my one word for 2023. A Norwegian word that basically means open-air life, outdoor recreation, or free-air life. My focus for the year, then, is to hike more (worry less), spend more time outdoors, and find inspiration in nature. And to feel better. Because I feel better after I’ve been hiking especially or or taking the dogs around the block or even sitting by the lake or campfire with a book. Some of my best days of 2022 were my hiking days. I felt awesome after my 30-day hiking challenge, even with an “arthritis flare-up.” When I feel better, I’m a better writer, a better friend, a better partner, a better mom. This year, I’ve joined the 52 Hike Challenge—changing your life one step at a time—so it seemed even more fitting to choose friluftsliv as my One Word. This morning, I went to my “local”—the closest Ice Age Trail segment to me, located in a nearby park. The trails were slippery in spots and puddles in others, so I didn’t actually hike much of the IAT and stayed on the wider park trails. I took my time, watched my footing, and soaked in the cool, fresh air. I’m off to a good start. Have you chosen a word for the year? how does one summarize in ten slides an afternoon on bike in #santabarbara for my @climate_ride #climaterise #challenge? . with great difficulty, because there was so much to see and experience! 💚🚲🌿🌊 . this was my chance to "break in", as it were, a @bromptonbicycle that i was still trying to familiarize myself with -- fold, unfold, the hub/derailleur gearing combo, the small wheels -- but nothing insurmountable 😉 . after walking and riding through the recently-converted-to-walk-street state street in downtown SB, you wonder why every city doesn't do the same! it was sidewalk dining and shopping at its most expansive, under large trees, blue skies, with the sounds of laughter filling the air! . as with any #beach city, one has to experience the ocean view, @stearnswharf, the beach #bikepath, the neighborhoods of those fortunate enough to live near the water. . and not to forget the culinary delights! how about #danish #pastries and #tibetan #noodles to make things more interesting! . at the end of the day, i left the same way as i had arrived, via @amtrak train -- a truly #multimodal day! #lifeonabike #plantbaseddining #blueskiesgoldensunshine #reducedcarbonfootprint #fairybluebike

Day 3, Author Life Month: Writing Fuel. Well, coffee (although I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to), fresh air, and lake time. Troy put out the porch furniture and I’m enjoying an afternoon of blue skies, golden sunshine, and 61 degrees. Back in Minnesota, a day like this wouldn’t fool me.
