For International Urban Sketchers Week I went to draw this unusual looking tree in a suburban street. A gardener man came to ask why I wanted to draw this ugly tree. He told me he’d removed some branches without getting Council permission as the heavy branches with their sharp pointy leaves were a danger if they fell. This really tall Bunya Pine is endemic to Australia and harks back to the Mesozoic era when dinosaurs might have played a part in the dispersal of its pine cones. It played a significant role too in the culture of the indigenous people who held large Bunya Festivals to feast on the edible pines. The base of its trunk looks like a HUGE elephant’s leg. More of the beauty to be found at our Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and today the perfect day to visit. Just love visiting our Botanical Gardens with beauty every which way from the front gate to the old built features. Today the notice 'Bunya Pine Cones falling' really caught my attention and could imagine the fright if one fell on your head......Ouch!!! Believe they are massive and can weigh up to 10 kg......Ouch!!! On the way out from the Cafe there was a potted Arthropodium available for sale and now waiting to be planted in my garden under the dreadful Pittosporum trees. Thankfully Arthropodiums like dry shade and the perfect plant to fill the space and the inspiration has come from the wonderful display of this plant growing under trees at the Gardens. #royaltasmanianbotanicalgardens #arthropodium #bunyapine
Spreading the risk: Metacollections are a way of increasing an endangered species' chance of surviving shrinking habitats, climate change impacts, pests and diseases. Propogating from the widest genetic range available, and distributing this material across different gardens in different, yet compatible climate zones is one way of helping ensure these survive. Wollemi pines (Wollemia nobilis, Araucariaceae, CE New South Wales, 3 - 6), here painted by artist Beverly Allen, have, since 2018, been forming a metacollection. Six of the most genetically diverse individual trees in the wild, propogated and sent to 36 botanic gardens, worldwide, to grow on. So should natural disaster impact the wild population, back ups, ex-situ exist... Boonyi or Bunya pines (Araucaria bidwillii, Araucariaceae, 1, 2, here painted by artist Dorothee Nijgh de Sampayo Garrido) exist in the wild only in 3 places: SE and 2 small populations in NE Queensland. Genome research into population diversity and distribution (natural and facilitated by Aboriginal peoples) is helping inform its future resilience. Growing diversity. The last day near Naples today and we couldnt leave without visiting some of the Roman ruins, so we took the train to Herculaneum. What an incredible place! Our Bunya Pine is dropping cones again! More than it ever has before too. I’ve included a pic with a little bit of info about them but basically the Bunya is a native Australian conifer that drops cones that can weight up to 10kg! 120 year old Araucaria bidwillii (bunya pine) located at St.Johns Anglican Church in Corowa recently had its cones harvested by the boys as the tree had started dropping them causing a risk to those within its vicinity 🌲 The Bunya Pine cone can weight up to 10kg, the nut found inside the cone can be harvested and eaten or even made into flour, pesto, casseroles the list goes on…I took our kids down to have a look at this magnificent tree, to which we have now husked the nuts from the pine cone in preparation for our own pesto 👌🏼☺️ #federationtreecare #bunyapine #significanttrees #corowa

Their pinecones can weigh up to 10 kilograms, which can be lethal, especially when falling from up to 50 metres!
