Forget what that football player said, I’m a stay outside mom. 24 hrs ago, my husband tried it. As I was packing for a retreat in Antigua, he mentioned how I was missing my daughter’s carnival and going to a foreign country. I asked him if he felt guilty when he missed the same event last year. I walked away frustrated. I cried, but I prayed about it, read Psalm 91, and immediately felt at peace. I had already had conversation with my 5 yo daughter about missing the carnival and she agreed Daddy could be there just like me. She prayed for me to be safe and told me to have a good time. I went to Antigua and my husband went to the carnival and took my son to a birthday party because I am not the default parent. I am not the only person responsible for my kids’ well-being. Following my dreams and tapping into ALL that God has created me to be & do has allowed my husband to be present in a way our kids need. I don’t accept mom guilt and If that makes me a “bad” mom, then so be it. My decisions as a mom are rooted in my faith and allows me to live out all of God’s intentions for me. And in not betraying myself and my needs, I model for my children how to NOT betray themselves. When Christian moms want to get past the societal mommy guilt to curate identities outside of motherhood, they come to me. In my INPowered Framework, I used biblical teachings as a foundation to help me reconcile my desires as a woman with my version of motherhood that allows me to prioritize me AND show up for my kids. In order for my children to benefit from all of me, I needed to be ALL IN on me. And if that means I am a “bad” mom, then so be it. It leaves me in a strange limbo, I have such mixed feelings. However, I am confident when I say, I won’t be reaching for this pump again following this review. This pump is complicated in more ways than one, let me explain. It’s capable of moving milk, I can comfortably express but it leaves me wanting more. There was one session when I was using this pump for about 20 minutes, I had a reasonable amount of milk but felt compelled to disconnect my tubes and hooked up to a more preferred pump. It was immediately I noticed the difference in the suction between the Duo and this other pump. I then continued to pump for 5 more minutes and finished “emptying” with a little more umph from this more effective pump, immediate satisfaction switching over. The best way to describe the suction of the Duo is: lacking in robust stimulation. I don’t tend to max out suction strength to move milk but with the Duo it’s almost impossible not to. Let’s start with the flanges, when I opened the M5 pumps I noticed immediately that the flanges were not the same as the S12 Pro. Yes, they’re both silicone flanges (yay!) but the M5 flanges that are labeled as 24mm flanges, actually are 24mm flanges. Unlike the S12 Pro flanges which are labeled as 24mm flanges but are oversized; which I share in the S12 Pro review. Is there anything actually wrong with this, yes and no, these flanges don’t inhibit the pumps performance but the oversized flanges might inhibit your let down performance. You may need inserts to get to your more comfortable size. I was very pleased when I saw the M5 flange was dialed down from the previous flange design. Mother's Day Musings.... To be honest I hate the warm fuzzy mom feeling; being a mom isn't all Hallmarkish. There's way more barfing than anyone tells you. I feel like it's totally bad ass to have kids and make sure to send out decent human beings into the world. Less sappy commercials and more Rage Against the Machine mentality! I was never the one who wanted to have kids. Even now in my friend group a lot of my friends don't have kids. I was always going to be the adventurous one. I thought kids would end that. I thought that having kids was like an anchor that grounded you to a life of 'being a mom'. At one point I dreamed of living in a castle in Ireland alone with a dog (I think I was 10ish). That reality is currently more living in South America in an apartment with 2 kids....and absolutely no chance of a dog. But here's the thing....at some point I realized that you could travel with kids. How did I ever get the idea 'once you have kids your life is going to change.....'???? (Side-eyes that narrative) I was really never going to sit around and wait for them to grow up, so I took them with me. It started with the 24 hour train from San Francisco to Seattle when Bangaly was a baby. I wanted to prepare them for the long flight from Cleveland to Kinshasa they would be going on.....and then I just kept going. Once you can do one 24 hour trip you can do anything. They have currently done about 6. It was really hard at the time with young kids. It's hard to juggle kids napping, diapering, eating when they are little. It's a pain to even get out of the house somedays. But once you do it.....there's nothing you can't do. And even though Bangaly won't remember that trip....I will. And they've made memories that have shaped them as people without them even knowing it. Also, turns out you can have kids in bars until about 7 p.m. Cheers to moms that travel!

This is such incredible research on pumping frequency for NICU parents! 🤱🍼 Most babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are there due to health problems, preterm labor or a traumatic birth experience. While NICU moms are recovering (both physically and mentally) and trying to absorb information about their baby’s condition, they are told that they need to start pumping as soon as possible, and that they need to pump every 2-3 hours to build a good supply. This can be so overwhelming in an already scary and stressful situation. Recent research from Dr. Aloka Patel at RUSH University Medical Center shows that if NICU moms are pumping at least ✨5 times in a 24-hour period for the first 5 days with one of those sessions is between 1 am – 5am✨,then they are likely to meet the volume of milk we expect for a full milk supply by 2 weeks! This could be a huge deal for parents with babies in the NICU. Bedtime can be chaotic at best. Especially when kids are overtired. The crying starts and lots of resistance happens around taking a shower or finding ways to shorten reading time. Parents can often see children ramp up their wishes to read more books with you or independently. Lots of encouragement to move along but also slow down until a certain 🥱 bedtime comes. Teaching your child to regulate their needs takes time and tact. Wishes and anxiety start but you know as a mother you’ve accomplished something when children can articulate, “I have anxiety about many things.” It might be helping your child with imagery or whatever helps them relax because every child is different. But what do mothers have after the tension of bedtime routine? I encourage mothers to do things that relax them. Yes, that glass of wine is easy but a raspberry herbal tea will be better to mend the anxiety you may be experiencing. Hydration! The dishes have to be done, light a candle and make it routine to write as away to de-stress in a journal. Be sure to turn off the candle as part of your way to enter your dream world of sleep. To get into deep dream sleep state, all what you do during the day impacts that world. That’s where you replenish your body on a cellular level. Your body needs to dream. Does this resonate with you?
