My Dwarf Thumbelina Leigh English Lavender is at peak bloom right now so I’m harvesting to dry for teas and culinary use. This variety is compact topping out at 1.5 high and about 18 inches spread. Harvest when the blooms start opening up. This means the oils have reached the top of the stalk. I had a spot I didn’t want it to completely take over so this variety was perfect. It also is one of the better smelling ones I’ve tried. There are three main types of lavender 1. Spanish lavender - this type is the most heat tolerant and grows easily in our California environment. It is highly decorative and can be recognized with its signature bunny ear blooms atop the stalks. The cons of this one are that the smell tends to have more of a menthol or camphor smell making it less sweet and more medicinal. 2. French lavender - This one can be recognized by its serrated leaves. It is best used for satchels, oil extraction and Perfumes since it has the strongest scent. 3. English lavender - This one is the preferred one for culinary use and my favorite since it has the sweetest smell. It has more delicate and smaller blooms It’s nice to have a few different ones especially since they can bloom at different times. Next year I’ll try to introduce a few into the front side yard. Once lavender is established it is very drought tolerant. Young plants need regular watering. They can be finicky in small pots but easily thrive when put I to the ground. The weather this past weekend was glorious. It felt so good to spend time in the garden with the sun out and the temps in the upper 60s. I started to cross some projects off the to-do list. Back in September, I started three cuttings of lavender, two of which rooted and have been growing in my basement grow space. I hardened them off over the last week and now it was time to plant them. They look tiny compared to the daffodils but I’m hopefully they’ll put on some significant growth this year. Lavender is known for its calming aromatherapy benefits and in floriography (floral symbolism) it's a symbol of purity, devotion, serenity and grace. I grow lavender for a variety of reasons; I use it in my soap making, in bath salts, in my planters and gardens, in tea, cooking, and for a natural scent in my house. It's a bit picky to start from seed. I started it at the end of January and now its spending a few weeks in a bag in my cold room to help stimulate germination. I've had good luck growing it from seed, but not much luck keeping in the garden over winter. I'm going to try again this year with the Dwarf Munstead (English) in a new place that hopefully it will like. I grow the French lavender for my soap making. It dries very well and I really like the fragrance of the leaves. I have never grown the Lavance variety before, so that is just for fun. If you are not into growing from seed you can get a plant from many places that sell plants in the spring. Lavender Grosso ... doesn't mean 'gross' like when you see something yuk, but is Italian for "big" or "large" or "fat", referring to the size of the flowers of this variety. The blooms in the pics are still lean and small because they're from a very tiny baby plant which will mature only in a few years' time, but already the fragrance is leagues ahead of any garden lavender I've ever known. The scent is strongly floral rather than camphor, and will be ideal for my embroidered scented sachets. (note there are 3 French Dentata blooms in the glass vase - they're the ones with the petal crowns). I actually know very little about lavender, but I've planted a small mixed variety garden and am learning as I go. According to what I read, Grosso is a hybrid belonging to the lavandin group, created by crossing Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender, or true lavender) X Lavandula latifolia (Portuguese lavender, known as spike or broadleaf lavender). Grosso does not grow into a large bush but remains small and compact and will be pretty if included in a small garden, and if you're happy with it being a small, grey, ball-shaped bush for 10 months of the year. Today I planted lavender because I need something to be excited about when I wake up in the morning. Even though I'm a model & a dancer now, I found I wasn't enthusiastic about starting my day and living my life. I neglected my garden last spring, which may have been a symptom of depression instead of the cause. It was easier to distract myself then. Now I am faced with my heavy feelings. Fear, grief-- they bully me. My body told me to take my lavender tincture and I eventually listened. It's extra strong because I let the herbs macerate for longer than needed because I was too unmotivated to strain them. Lavender alleviates anxiety & depression, even just the scent of it. I should get some lavender incense for my home. Lavandula of the Lamiaceae (mint) family likes well-drained soil & is drought-tolerant. It hates sitting in soggy soil. This small pot will only do a short while; mint plants have crazy fast-spreading roots that will choke themselves if they run out of room. I think this is what happened to both my other lavender and my lemon balm-- & my lemon balm was thriving! I will try to upgrade this lavender's pots in a timely manner as it grows into a beautiful bush. I'll take my lavender tincture regularly. I'll tend to my garden. I'll keep peddling herbs into the community. This time 4 years ago our newly planted lavender project got flooded! A lavender farmers biggest fear is this! We thought it was all going to die from root rot. Some totally died, and some fought so hard come spring but were sick and died that summer and some are still here but a little quirky in shape! If anyone has visited our field they would have seen the patchy middle (called root rot valley) and this is why!!! You can’t control the weather, but happy to say since manually digging in a drain across the field it has helped a lot.
