4 Years ago today we all watched the dreaded announcement by Boris Johnson with utter disbelief. We were going into an official lockdown! We were told that we were only allowed to leave our homes for the following: Shopping for essentials One form of exercise a day To seek medical care To provide care to a vulnerable person To travel to work only if it can't be done from home The police were able to enforce these rules with fines and dispersing groups. The message was STAY AT HOME! I remember thinking that it felt like a ridiculous but would all be over in a couple of weeks. Who knew how much it would change life as we knew it. I was on the cusp of setting up as a Freelance Virtual Assistant and didn't know whether to carry on. I then got thrown into the world of homeschooling with an 18 month old to look after as well. Fun fond memories? Absolutely not! However, we did fully embrace the daily workouts with Joe Wicks, enjoyed the more relaxed pace of life, garden picnics, baking, setting up shops, crafts, daily walks and all the other good stuff that came from it. Collectively in clinic and personally, these last 2 weeks have been VERY HARD for many. Trauma lives in the body and it REMEMBERS our stress response to prepare for next time. On anniversary dates of trauma the body brings the warning signs to the surface, our brains frequently have forgotten. When you stop, think, reflect… it all comes flooding back. The global pandemic will forever live in our bodies even when our brains try to forget it. So if those around you are irritable, anxious, overwhelmed and there seems to be no reason- there is a very clear reason WHY. Remember, validate, honor our lived experience. In twenty years time... People will not ask the children of 2020 if they caught up with their studies. They will not ask them what grades they made, despite the year off school. They will ask them with wonder ‘what was it like?’ They will ask them ‘how did you cope?’ ‘How did you feel?’ ‘What do you remember of those days?” They will listen in awe to the tales of clapping on doorsteps for the medical workers. They will sit open-mouthed to hear of daily walks being the only life we saw and how much we missed human contact and gatherings. They will be amazed to know about empty supermarkets, online concerts, birthdays spent on a screen and a life lived inside. They will listen, then sit back with amazement and say, ‘Wow. You went through so much.’ So think about what you would like your children to take away from this whole year. Tell them they are not behind. Tell them they are not missing out. Tell them they are extremely special indeed and they will be forever made stronger by this unique time. Tell them catching up is not even a thing because they have grown so much in so many other ways. Remind them too of the fun stuff, the family jigsaws, the window rainbows, the zoom bingo. The feeling of safety and togetherness amidst the chaos. Let them take that thought with them through life. Change the narrative now and it will travel far. Tell the children they are not behind. March 11, 2020. The unofficial fourth anniversary of the Covid Pandemic. Four years ago society began to shut down. We had NO IDEA where it would lead. The WHO declared Covid to be a "global pandemic" But no one had heard of "social distancing" and we all still didn't know how seriously to take all of this. But stocks plummeted, schools and workplaces closed, and we all bought toilet paper and stopped shaking hands. The toll is horrific. Officially more than 7 million worldwide dead. "Excess deaths" - those above what was expected from pre-Covid trends - are approaching 30 million. And the non-death effects? Ongoing health problems. A siesmic shift in the way we work.
