While the concept of a fairytale multiverse is intriguing, and the world/magic structure set up has such great potential, this book fell flat for me. The use of modern references started off fun but quickly descended into pulling me right out of the story. Although this is a novella, the pacing is all over the place. Harrow can write pop culture references into dialogue with ease and it all lands, fantastically. 💯 An FMC with the vulnerability of a chronic illness and a combination of bravery and a need to escape her own circumstances makes for a really compelling character to follow through fast-paced adventures like this one. The length of this book, (along with the previous one) at 130 pages means a lot happens in a shorter reading time, and the reader is never left too long in one circumstance with the cast. That said, it doesn’t detract from the story and the believability of actions, movements and of course, dimension hopping to find the villains or heroes - or whoever they present themselves to be at first. I like when a feminist, mildly off-page spiced plot gives high stakes, sharp turns, and deserved endings. A Mirror Mended is as good as the book before it, a Spindle Splintered. These books do feel very “for the girls”, and I mean that for any age. I’m not young, ya’ll, and I love this author! You could read this book in an afternoon and delight in the adventure you just went on with Zinnia Gray. Ok, so… I LOVED this book. I don’t read a lot of fantasy, but when I heard @alix.e.harrow talking about #TheOnceAndFutureWitches on B&N’s Poured Over podcast, I knew I had to buy it immediately. The two things that drew me to it: Witches and fairy tales. I have always been fascinated by the origins and evolution of fairy tales, and similarly have read a lot about the histories of witch trails here and abroad. I really enjoyed how Harrow weaved the two together. And I also cannot wait to read Harrow’s #FracturedFables novellas. This book takes place in New Salem in the late 1800s, amidst the suffrage movement, as the 3 Eastwood sisters and a bunch of spectacular supporting characters try to bring back witching, which was banished a long time ago. It’s about sisters, mothers, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, women’s rights, and so much more. I will say that I almost lost interest at a point in the first 100 pages where everyone's trying to gather their pieces of magic, to figure out what their goals are, and it felt almost haphazard, but as I read on – and gripped the book tighter - I came to think that this haphazard feeling might have been intentional; it felt very much like it was mimicking the mental state of our main characters at that precise moment of the book, 3 young women who weren’t yet sure what exactly they were fighting for. And then as I moved towards the midpoint and into the second half, the book became so hard for me to put down. There was so much heart as the sisters found themselves and helped each other, stumbled along the way and got back up again. And Harrow has created such a vivid setting in New Salem that’s rich with lore and history. I wish I’d read this for a book club because there are so many big and little things that I would love to discuss but that are way too long for an IG post! #amreading #2024reads

Alix Harrow was one of my Big Authors in 2023 and her fractured fairytales in particular were among my favorite reads of the year. The snarky heroine with a dark sense of humor spoke to me on a deep, personal level. And the anthropological discussion of fairytales alongside the heroine’s journey was the Cherry on the sundae for me. Just very much hitting me right in the happy spots across the board. Obviously, the day I walked into work and saw them smashed together in one paperback, I had to have it. I’m still hoping for more in this series, but I like having the two novellas in one book. These are actually stories I’m likely to pick up again, which is rare for me, but they’re SO quick and such a good little serotonin burst for me. They give me brain pop-pops! I wanted so much to love these retelling of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and to some extent I did enjoy them, however I felt the narrative was rushed and the world building lacked depth. I found the writing was simplistic and it seemed like it was geared toward a younger audience. I also thought some plot elements were just plain silly (cell phones working in a fairy tale multiverse. Really!?!?). I did enjoy the lighthearted take on fairy tale tropes and how each individual fairy tale princess can forge their own path in the world. I really like the way this novella really twists the story and makes you think of the other characters within the traditional Snow White story. The writing is lovely, as always. I love the retelling of sleeping beauty and Snow White, and the fact that multiple different versions and iterations are used to bring life to both books. I also love the villains because they are morally gray to the fullest. I think that is such an important concept. As I age, I find that people aren’t generally good or bad, heroes or villains. The world and people’s choices aren’t black and white, and that’s okay. Books and stories that highlight that fact are great to read because I think it brings to light the fact the people’s circumstances drive action in the moment. "A spindle splintered" and "A mirror mended" by Alix E. Harrow are the first two instalments in "Fractured fables". We follow Zinnia Gray, who suffers from a rare disease caused by an industrial accident. Due to her condition, Zinnia knows her 21st birthday will be her last. Her best friend Cham wants to make it special and throws her a Sleeping Beauty party. When Zinnia pricks her finger, she finds herself in a different world. I love fairy tale re-tellings and was very excited to pick up "A spindle splintered" and "A mirror mended". It was so fun that the books began in our world and time. I liked the idea that known stories, like "Sleeping Beauty" kept happening, in different ways and in different places. Fairy tales are timeless and keep changing. I loved that Harrow contributed to that. She uses pop culture references that were fun but a bit outdated. I also loved that she turned some known tropes upside down, classic stories need that! Did Harrow bring something new to the table? The books follow the same patterns as the known stories and there aren't enough surprises, not enough twists and turns and not enough darkness. All in all, "A spindle splintered" and "A mirror mended" were fun re-tellings that I wanted something more from.

Charm, who is her best friend, is excited to make her last birthday extra special by throwing her a party. It's theme: Sleeping Beauty aka Zinnia's favorite fairytale. Zinnia pricks her finger on the spinning wheel. Something happens where she finds herself with another sleeping beauty in another dimension or world. Both of them want to find a way to escape their fate. This is such an inspirational book filled with acceptance, love, a bit of humor and quite a few twists along the way. It was a very fun read! Part of the book is set in Ohio, which is the state I live in - a bonus for me! It's the first book in the Fractured Fables series and now I can't wait to read the rest. @alix.e.harrow is not a new author for me. I also read Once & Future Witches which I also gave ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow @alix.e.harrow We listened to this book together on audio in the hospital room. We wanted something fun and light and short. Something we could listen to for a while, nap for a bit and pick right back up. At just under four hours this book was perfect for that. It’s the second book in the series, but I don’t think you’d be missing anything if you started here. I haven’t read the first book, but with how much I loved this one, I will be reading it sometime. I knew from the opening that I was going to like it. It had all the ingredients I love. An interesting and relatable protagonist, fairy tale references galore! It’s not a retelling, rather fairy tales make up alternate realities. A multiverse of fairy tales. It has nods to my all time favorite city - Madison. And the story telling voice is engaging and addictive. What I wasn’t expecting was just how deeply this was going to hit me on an emotional level. There are layers to this book - nuance around relationships. And there’s a story about agency, about self determination, that had me crying - in a good way - by the end. Do you remember the Ruth monologue at the end of the Barbie movie? No major spoilers if you haven’t seen it (but you should honestly see it). There’s a part where they are talking about permission to be who you want to be. Barbie asks “So being human isn’t something that I ask for, or even want? It’s just something that I discover that I am?” There’s a lot in that ending, and that was just one of those moments that hit home. Any story that has that element of “you don’t need to ask permission to be who you are” or any story about someone finding their own agency, about becoming who they are without waiting for permission, will always win me over. And this story has that in the most beautiful moving way. I don’t want to say too much, because I really want you to read this book. If you’re someone who follows me and reads my posts, especially if you make it to the bottom of my rambling, I’m about 99% sure you’d like this story. La mía con menos “spooky” del que esperaba 😂 Al final he pasado completamente de mi tbr y me he dedicado a leer romcoms sáficas para compensar la falta de romance en mi vida 😌🥲 Pero no todo está perdido, porque entre romcom y romcom, me terminé este librito que, a ver, no es la historia de mi vida, pero entretiene. Además, sin yo saberlo (aunque 100% encantada de descubrirlo), es un libro con representación sáfica principal, que siempre es un plus ✨ ¿Y de qué va? Pues es una historia cortita (poco más de 100 páginas) que tiene como prota a Zinnia, una chica que tiene una extraña enfermedad terminal y que vive obsesionada con el cuento de la bella durmiente. Se supone que Zinnia tiene que morir a los 21 años pero el día de su cumpleaños se pincha el dedo con una rueca y es transportada al mundo de una bella durmiente, Prímula (Briar Rose, en inglés) y… bueno, pasan cositas. La verdad es que es una historia con una narrativa simple pero con un tono bastante divertido. Hay mil referencias a la cultura pop, brujas que no son tan malvadas, mensajes feministas y de amistad, princesas guerreras y rep lgbtq 🌈 Para pasar el ratito no está nada mal y la pluma de Harrow no deja indiferente. Es mi primera toma de contacto con la autora y tengo muchas ganas de continuar leyendo otras historias :) 💜 ¿Qué estáis leyendo? There are ao many varieties of retellings from magical fantasy land types to historical romances to contemporary spin-offs. They can be straightforward or not. But Alix Harrow is a crafter of stories, and she embraces that variety of fairy tales through Zinnia's obsession with Sleeping Beauty. Zinnia, with her terminal illness, clung to the spirit of Sleeping Beauty as a way to grasp with her own mortality. She devoured every version of the story. She is a scholar of fairy tales. Her hopes and dreams are tied to happily ever afters she may not have herself. These haunting novellas were both perfect in length, plot arc, and character development. The first tackles Sleeping Beauty and the second is Snow White. They should be read in order for maximum impact, but you probably could read Mirror Mended on its own. But with such slim volumes, both together are still less than most fantasy novels. Highly accessible and a must-read for fairy tale fans and those who appreciate storytelling as craft. ❓️apparently it's fairy tale week here on my feed, with Aladdin yesterday and Sleeping Beauty and Snow White today. FRACTURED FABLES 1&2 by Alix E. Harrow Hello, I love Alix. Is that the review? Maybe lol. ALSO, she has mastered the novella length. Novellas are a craft unto themselves, needing care and creativity in a different style than full-length novels, packing a punch in a quarter of the length. Well y’all, Alix did us right with these babies. I laughed. I cried. I ignored my life to listen to these in one sitting apiece and just couldn’t let go of the characters until these stories were complete. Sleeping Beauty and Snow White (respectively) have been reimagined by a MC with an obscure (probably) terminal disease who can travel to these fractured worlds of impossibly wild fairy tale settings. I just. I just loved them. Utter delight. Inclusive, irreverent, and fun, you have NO REASON not to pick them up! Excellent audios, both. Highly recommend! Five stars for Alix’s writing any ol’ day of the week. Fairy tale retellings: hit me with your recs!!

I decided I was going to start putting some dents into my TBR so I chose to start with Alix E. Harrow’s Fractured Fables series! This series is made up of A Spindle Splintered and A Mirror Mended, and follows the main character Zinnia Gray as she finds herself treading from reality to the worlds of fairy tale. I read both novellas in one day 👀 Here are my thoughts! Spoilers incoming! A Spindle Splintered Whilst slow initially, the moment Zinnia got transported I was hooked. I loved the mix of the real world stuff and fairy tale stuff, like the fact that she could still use her phone and talk across the worlds to Charm (who, firstly, is a great friend and, secondly, has such a cool fairy tale name). I think it was a really quick and fun read, fast paced and interesting throughout and I loved this fresh perspective on an old story. I loved when all the sleeping beauties came together to save Primrose and Zellandine is hands down the character I enjoyed the most. 3.75/5⭐️’s A Mirror Mended I loved that we switched stories! Moving on from Sleeping Beauty, we hopped right into Snow White! I love an evil woman so I was instantly hooked with the Evil Queen. It was so cool to see a different perspective, where the Queen was also just once a princess, and I loved the really dark spin of Snow White being evil. I also loved seeing Zellandine again! Altogether, a great fast read with good characters and interesting plot! 3.75/5⭐️’s I’ll definitely read any future instalments of this series if they’re going to happen 👀 and I think I may bump up The Once and Future Witches and The Ten Thousand Doors of January on my TBR so I can have read all of Alix E. Harrow! In the meantime, back to my Trials of Apollo!

I must confess, I read this series/duology out of order. But they’re so small I didn’t realized I had read book two first until I was halfway through. So this is me reading book one months later and enjoying it and also feeling like I understand book two way better now 😂 A spindle splintered is a refreshing feminist (without being too weird/out there) retelling of sleeping beauty combined with the idea of multiple realities. It’s edgy and modern and short. On the topic of short, the book moves quickly through the plot while still allowing for appropriate amounts of introspection, explanation/due process, and character growth. A Spindle Splintered What’s the best way to vanquish the Sunday Scaries? Read an entire book (well, technically a novella but @goodreads counts it so yeehaw!) This fractured fairytale is a great book for this time of year. It is centered on someone who is running out of Time (like teachers or kids going back to school/watching the leaves turn). This version’s sleeping beauty- Zinnia Gray - is dying, so @alix.e.harrow has upped the stakes. But, Zinnia’s time isn’t out yet, just like it’s still not yet fall, so there is also a chance for renewal and time to change your narrative. Need to Know: it’s only 125 pages! I know I have encouraged you all to read both the physical and virtual book at the same time so that you are never alone, but this book deserves to be read in physical only - the Arthur Rackman illustrations that were “remixed” make the story all the more haunting. Best Bits - the story she chose to retell. Maleficent from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was always my favorite - so much so that the lady at the local video store (age alert) gave us a copy to keep since I rented it every week. I was also tickled by the three fairies and their bickering, which are also referenced in Harrow’s fracture-ing. I like the metaphor of a pen running over the story so often that you fall through - just like a pen wears through the page. Caution: #spolier: It is interesting that the wicked fairy in this version is only delaying the inevitable because the rules of the world don’t allow for bigger dreams. There is definitely a subtle takedown of capitalism as the main character is dying because of corporate greed, so it is in keeping with the socializing aspect of fairy tales. Though I hope one day that my daughter reads this version and doesn’t recognize that it is a better spin on the traditional, that our society is advanced enough to not be startled by a girl taking charge of her destiny. #fracturedfables #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #booksbooksbooks #bookworm

Son novelas cortas, juveniles y amenas que se leen en un ratito, y ¡tienen ilustraciones! 😍 Si os gustan las princesas Disney 👸🏻 que las villanas sean las protagonistas de las historias, los retellings y la idea de un multiverso de cuentos de hadas, os los recomiendo. Nos vamos a encontrar con cuentos adaptados a nuestra realidad donde ni el malo es tan malo ni el bueno tan bueno, donde tanto las princesas como las villanas quieren decidir cómo vivir y a aprender a ser dueñas de su propia historia, a no aceptar lo que otros les han impuesto. De momento solo hay dos libros, pero ojalá Alix E. Harrow siga con la saga, tengo ganas de ver versiones de otros cuentos ✨ . . .

Obsessed with Sleeping Beauty, her friend Charm sets up a themed party for her that includes a spinning wheel. When Zinnia pricks her finger on it, she finds herself transported to another world and needs to help Sleeping Beauty. While doing this, she also needs to find a way to get back home. This was an extremely short story, making it a quick read. I do enjoy stories that re-imagine classics that we know from childhood. A very interesting take on the reason for the curse to actually be a positive spin. Hello 🌞 C'est depuis Amsterdam que je partage mon avis sur Eclats dormants de @alix.e.harrow publié chez @hachetteheroes 😊 Zinnia est une jeune fille malade qui se sait comdamnée. Depuis toujours, elle est fan de La Belle au bois dormant. Le soir de son 21ème anniversaire qui est censée être le dernier, elle plonge dans le monde des Belles Endormies et fait la rencontre de Primerose. Une belle qu'il faut sauver de sa malédiction 🥀 Ce livre est assez déroutant je ne m'attendais pas à ça. Au départ, je pensais découvrir une réécriture de conte plus traditionnelle. Pendant les premières pages je pensais lire une biographie de l'autrice tant le récit était éloigné de ce que j'attendais 😅 Passé la surprise, j'ai beaucoup aimé ce livre qui nous permet de suivre des héroïnes brisées mais qui s'accrochent tout de même à la vie. Zinnia est une battante. Elle se sait condamnée mais le lâche rien. Primerose est une jeune femme qui rêve de libertté et d'indépendance alors que sa vie est dictée par des hommes.
