💧 STRESS BUCKET 💧 This week the Merseyside Blues Team have been exploring the stress bucket activity with young people 💧 The stress bucket shows how everything that is happening in our lives can take a toll on us, and if we don't do anything to improve our mood our bucket will end up overflowing! This is when we might shutdown away from others or feel like we are having a meltdown! 😓 Filling up our bucket could be things like exams, friendship issues, the weather - absolutely anything that may bring down our mood! ⚡ To empty our bucket, we can do things that improve our mood and allow us to destress. These are called our taps! This year’s Black History Month theme: ‘Saluting Sisters’- honouring the achievements of Black women Some significant inventions by black women : Alice Parker : Heating System, allowing people to heat their entire homes instead of just one area. Shirley Jackson : fibre-optic cables, She developed things like touch-tone dialling and call-waiting. As well as fibre-optic cables, allowing for long distant calls. MARIE VAN BRITTAN BROWN : Home Security System. She developed the security system consisting of a sliding camera, television monitors, two-way microphones, and four peepholes. Brown’s invention marked the first time closed-circuit television, or CCTV, was used in a security system. Ethnic background can play a part in mental health issues and services ✋🏾 Black Minds Matter UK is a fully registered charity operating in the UK; connecting Black individuals and families with free mental health services- by professional Black therapists to support their mental health. 🟢 Mental Health Awareness Week 🟢 This week, Blues practitioners Rhiann and Abbey as well as a helping hand from one of our Blues students Tom, spread awareness of Mental Health Awareness Week by hosting signposting and prize stalls at @prentonhighschoolforgirls and @stanselmscollege ℹ️🏆 The theme this year is around anxiety - and how this is a common feeling that we all experience, however sometimes it can be hard to control 🧠 In our programmes we discuss anxious feelings and what we can do to help calm and control them! ❤️‍🩹 Our top tips are; - Think about what is in and out of your control - Is the thing you are worrying about something you can control? If so, what can you do to change the situation that is making you feel anxious. Is the situation out of your control? If so, how could you reframe the situation and change your thinking 💭 - Reward yourself - Sometimes we will have to deal with situations which make us anxious such as big changes or events! 📚 EXAM SEASON 📚 Exam season is upon us! Whether you have GCSEs, A Levels or mocks, it is important to remember the things we can do for ourselves so that we don’t burnout! 🤕 Burnout happens when we work too hard or don’t give ourselves the breaks we needs – which can lead to us feeling demotivated, upset, worried or stressed. 😟 Therefore, it is important that when you are studying you have plenty of breaks and time away from studying. 👏 HABIT STACKING 👏 Setting goals and developing new habits is a great way to boost motivation and make positive changes in our lives. However, it can be really hard to get going and we often drop habits after a few days! 📆 Habit stacking is a great way to gently introduce new behaviours into our lives and give ourselves a better chance to stick to these habits! 💁 You do this by combining an existing habit that you happily complete daily, with a new habit. The tools you need to complete the new habit should be around the existing habit. 😴 WORLD SLEEP DAY 😴 Today is World Sleep Day, a day to bring awareness to the importance of sleep and how this impacts our everyday life! 🛌 This year, the theme is ‘Sleep is Essential for Health as sleep has a major impact on our physical, social and mental wellbeing. 😄 There are many different elements for good quality sleep: Duration – having a long enough sleep that you feel rested and alert when you wake up, this can be anywhere between 6-9 hours depending on the person. Ensure you get to bed early enough to have enough sleep! ⏰ Continuity – having a sleep that isn’t broken without interruptions such as alarms or outside noise. If you know you may be woken up by outside noise, invest in some earplugs. If you struggle to wake up to alarms, try a sleep app which wakes you up gradually! 😴 Depth – sleep should be deep enough to allow your body to restore and recover itself from the day! Try to minimise distractions such as light, you can do this by popping on a eye mask or covering your eyes with a shirt or cloth! 💤 A good bedtime routine is super important! Try and turn brightness down on your phone before bed, and try and stop using screens an hour before you plan to sleep. 👏THANKFUL FRIDAY👏 As part of @actionforchildrenuk graditude week, we wanted to take a moment to think about how we can also spread some gratitude towards ourselves. 😊 Gratitude is a great way to reflect on things in your life that bring you happiness, especially in times when you might be feeling low. ⭐FANTASTIC FRIDAY⭐ Changing doing is a large focus within our sessions! 🔍 Adding in activities into our routine can make us feel better, as they increase our oxytocin and serotonin levels – which can make us feel happier and more energised. 😁 Exercise is a fantastic way to add in activity into our routine. 🤷 Sometimes it can be hard to get active, especially if you have a busy day of school or socialising, but there are many little things we can do to get active when our schedules are big! 📑 Walking – this could be a walk around the block or a woodland stroll! 🌲Walking is a easy way to get in some exercise into our routine. Why not arrange to meet up with your friends and walk around a local nature trail or park? 🚶Or perhaps try walking home from school instead of getting public transport if this works for you, or get off a few stops early and walk the remaining distance! 🏡 At home – this doesn’t have to be boring! On YouTube, there are plenty of workout videos for all abilities, you can even search up by the music you like. 🎵 If you have a Nintendo Switch – games such as Just Dance or Ring Fit are fantastic if you want a gaming aspect to your workout. 🎮 At the gym – working out at the gym can be a great way to get some exercise in! Check your local area for student/young person rates. 🌬️ Breathing Techniques 🌬️ When we are stressed 😩 anxious 😥 angry 😠 or upset 😢, we take short chest breaths which can cause our body 🧍🏽 to feel panicked and lose oxygen 🌬️ which can cause our heart ❤️ to race and mind 🧠 to panic. 🎯 GOAL SETTING 🎯 Sometimes it’s hard for us to find motivation to get going and make positive changes in our lives. 💬One way we can do this is by goal setting! 🥅 Goal setting doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult! We can set ourselves small, obtainable goals which can still give us the same sense of accomplishment and pride. 😊 Above are some ideas of goals to start you off; Tidy your space 🧹 - Pick an area of your room, whether that be your bed, wardrobe, desk etc. Set a timer for 10 minutes and try to tidy as much as you can! ⏳️ Put rubbish in the bin and pop things back in their homes. If you feel motivated after 10 minutes, set another timer and start again! 👍 Finish something you started 💻 – If you’ve got some homework due or some revision you need to do, make a plan of what you need to get done! 📝 Set a 25-minute timer and try and get as much as you can done. Then, set a 5-minute timer and reward yourself! Search the ‘Pomodoro Technique’ for more information! 🍅⏳️ Healthy swap 🍎 – Choose one snack and swap this for a healthier alternative! Or try to add one healthier item to your diet! 🔃 Positive affirmation 💬 – Write down or say one positive statement about yourself, try and say this every morning or evening! 🟡NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS DAY🟡 Today is national stress awareness day! 🤯 Being stressed is an extremely common experience, however being stressed for a long time can have a negative impact on our bodies. 🤷🏻‍♀️👎 When we are stressed, our bodies release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. 👨‍🔬 High levels ⬆️ of these hormones can made us feel low or run down. 😖 It’s important to make sure to take care of ourselves 🫂 and lower our stress levels when possible to make us feel better, and raise our happy hormones ⬆️ such as dopamine and serotonin! 😊 We can do this by; Reaching out whenever we feel stressed, or have a lot on our minds! 🗣 Spend some time to relax.
