🌄 I know it’s not strictly gardening (although photos are from my front and back garden and you can see some trees), but this was the first time I saw an aurora borealis (and in Bristol, UK, of all places) and I was in awe! An Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights) is caused by charged particles from the sun hitting gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. The colours occur due to different gases in the Earth’s atmosphere being energised by the charged particles. The two most common gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are nitrogen and oxygen. Oxygen atoms glow green - the colour most often seen in the Northern Lights, while nitrogen atoms emit purple, blue and pink. Went on a little trip to the picturesque village of Castle Combe in the Cotswolds on Saturday. This is such a lovely spot for a picnic, there is also the Manor House hotel where you can have a lovely meal and a local pub, serving food as well as a few coffee shops. The village is a popular location for filming and has appeared in movies like doctor dolittle, war horse and even downton abbey. Harper-Rae loved looking round St Andrews Church, with its beautiful stained glass windows. There were also games on the lawns opposite the Manor House hotel. It does get very busy here so I’d definitely recommend arriving before noon. There is a car park situated at the top of the hill and public toilets located over the bridge, at the bottom of the village. SS Great Britain- Botany Launch 🌿 On Tuesday, we were kindly invited along to the plants crossing continents event, onboard Bristol’s famous ship @ssgreatbritain where their new Wardian Cases were unveiled. These Victorian glass houses, that were used to transport plants over long distances will be a new permanent fixture on the ship, with ferns, flowers and fruit trees planted inside them. We learned how steamships played a vital role in the global migration of plants during the Victorian era and that they were only watered once at the beginning of the voyage but would stay hydrated for up to 9 weeks in these sea-faring terraria. Whilst exploring the ship, head below deck and check out nurseryman, Thomas Lang’s cabin or take part in the ‘fern-tastic’ trail over Easter. 🐎My first time at @cheltenhamraces 🏴I can’t believe how long I have been living in England and I had never attended something as quintessential as this! So when our friends suggested we go to it on Ladies Day (officially called ‘Style Wednesday’) I couldn’t be happier (any excuse to get dressed up, right?) 💃🏼The theme for this year was ‘Fast Horses, Slow Fashion. The style is timeless and the glamour matches the glory’ celebrating the 100 years of the ‘Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup’ through vintage/borrowed items and investment pieces that can be passed down through generations - so I added as many items as possible to fit the bill: - Blazer: @hollandcooperclothing (current) - Stole: vintage unbranded (sourced online) - Dress: @karen_millen (current) - Fascinator: @georginablythmillinery (custom made) - Bag: vintage mulberry (belonged to my mother-in-law) - Shoes: @malonesouliers (current) - Earrings & necklace: vintage from Spain (belonged to my nan, I wore this set for my wedding too!). Also probably the oldest item (after the jewellery set and the stole) is the ‘Lorena’ gold bracelet on my right hand (which was a ‘communion’ present from my nan and I have worn it since I was 9 years old!) 🍽️And finally, if you are here more for the food and drinks, we went for the ‘Gold Cup hospitality package’ that included breakfast, different lunch options with desserts, a free bar and afternoon tea 🐴What a fabulous day! 📈’Markets’ dinner at the Weston Stage of the @bristol_beacon with @couttsbank 🤍We had champagne on arrival and listened to Bristol Beacon’s CEO Louise Mitchell talking about the charitable work the Beacon does with Bristol communities 🍽️We then sat down and listened to Fahad Kamal (Coutt’s CIO) talk about financial updates, the Bristish economy and the future of banking…while we had a lovely meal! ⚓️Dinner at fish restaurant La Frasquita in @caletadefuste_oficial 🍽️I had seen very good reviews about this place (it always had people queuing when we passed it at night) so we decided to try it! In order of the photos: - Me and my Barraquito (Coffee, @licor43uk , condensed milk, cinnamon, milk foam and lemon peel) this was dessert but is the only drink I took a selfie with! - We started with @vermouthpadro white and @cynarusa (a artichoke and herbs liquor) - The very knowledgeable owner came with the whole tray of the ‘catch of the day’ for me to choose, explaining what each fish was called, what the fish eats (and therefore its taste and texture) and how they cook it. This video has sound, so you can hear the explanation (in Spanish) but beware, even me being a native Spanish speaker I struggled understanding his Canarian accent (to us from mainland Spain, they Canarians talk with what sounds like a South American accent!) - In the end, my chosen fish was Fula (Beryx decadactylus) a local fish similar to a red bream - Tuna croquetas with ‘papas arrugadas’ (the typical Canarian potatoes) - Always looking forward to try Albariños that we haven’t had before - this one from @pazocilleiro 2021 was really good - Gambas al ajillo are always a must for us! - This is my fish cooked: simply grilled with a garlic, olive oil and parsley sauce and side potatoes and salad (so so good but I couldn’t barely finish it, it was really big! 😅 - The aforementioned Barraquito coffee for me and carajillo for @j17pro - And as its typical (although not always happens) we were treated to shots on the house…in this case more like ‘doubles on ice’ of ronmiel (honey rum) they must have liked us, as they other table only got single shots 😎 🐟Do you eat whole fish, or do you prefer when they come deboned and filleted?
Week 7 was a whirlwind, packed full of adventure and just a little bit chaotic 😅 The first half of the week was spent working so I could spend the second half relaxing. Work has been incredibly draining recently & the thought of finding a new client is terrifying, but my parents surprised me with dropping some beautiful flowers on my doorstep which massively cheered me up 🥰 Jack & I are more of a “celebrate pancake day” couple than “celebrate valentines”, so we had pancakes for dinner (then again a few days later at 5am after discovering a furry little intruder in our house🤦🏻♀️) Thursday involved a trip into Bristol to see the @whitestarheritage exhibition @paintworks_bristol - I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was brilliant! Not too much there, but enough that it took us a few hours to look around. For £13 a ticket it was well worth it! It’s a travelling exhibition & I highly recommend keeping an eye out in case it visits your town 🚢 Thursday also involved a trip to @lucyandyakbristol - it was supposed to be to return some bits from the sale, but I fell in love with this jacket so it had to come home with me 😍 Friday was lost to our first fight with the squirrel in our loft, 5am pancakes & then the migraine that inevitably followed only having 3 hours sleep 🤦🏻♀️ it was also a year to the day since we lost nan - in an odd way I was grateful to be so preoccupied 🤷🏻♀️ Saturday we went back to our seaside home town to visit our favourite doggo & enjoy a bit of sunshine 🌞 On Sunday we headed for a “cheer up/distraction” lunch with my parents. The weather was beautiful 🥰 then we went on a second hand furniture expedition to get some new drawers for my office. 🩷 Valentine’s Day lunch 🩷 🧂Today we ate at @restaurante_el36salinas (our favourite restaurant of this holiday!) inside the Museo de la Sal (Salt Museum) by the salt mines (Las Salinas de El Carmen @fuerteventura.spain ) - We started with vermouth: @vermustpetroni for me and @universovermouth for @j17pro - On the house, to try the the salt from the mines: toasted bread with salt and spirulina (a local algae) infused olive oil, salt and spirulina butter and truffle butter (plus the plain rock salt and spirulina rock salt) - Homemade bread, tuna belly, egg and roasted peppers in olive oil salad and ham and wild mushroom croquetas - Poqched egg over roasted potatoes, ibérico ham and truffle oil - A lovely #lagardacachada Albariño - Braised octopus on a bed of parmentier potatoes with paprika and chili oil - And for the dessert, carajillo for James, barraquito for me (that’s coffee, condensed milk, @licor43_es and lemon peel) and a homemade passionfruit and strawberry cheesecake - The lovely decor of the place - And they gave us our leftover bread for the squirrels 🤔What did you eat for your Valentine’s/Galentines?

Week 6/52 - the one where my phone became entirely filled with dog photos 🐶 I had a week of purely working on my laptop & entertaining the doggo, so not much to report this week 😅 although Ted’s constant pestering of walking me in the direction of the cafe paid off and he finally got his visit - then made me and Dad sit outside in the cold so he could chase leaves 🤦🏻♀️ We’d planned to go to Bristol Lights Festival, but Ted’s an old man with a poorly heart & he just wasn’t up to it. P H O T O E D I T I N G 🌸 I've spoken out before about how photo editing can cause negative effects on those viewing such images online; however, have you ever thought about the person behind the photo? Small subtle changes can cause such an impact on those that use photo editing apps. With each minuscule alteration, you start to lose sight of reality. You become sooo used to this 'perfect' image in front of you, that you start judging your real self. This can have a major impact on self-image and self-confidence too! It cost me absolutely nothing to edit the 2nd picture into the 1st. Literally no money left my wallet. Meaning this service is literally available to anybody! I know I was the only one in control but I felt exposed 🙈 I had all these 'flaws' laid bare in front of me. These 'imperfections' were all automatically identified by the app, then they were easily identifiable by me in real life. Some of these 'imperfections' are things that I've grown up to accept about myself - like the spots/scars on my body. In seconds, any small amount of confidence, that I had accumulated over the years, completely vanished. This shock reduction of self-esteem was only from one editing!!! I do understand that photo editing can be fun and silly but small changes can be damaging. If it's something you like doing, and it's something that is effecting your self-esteem... maybe try and pull back slightly 💗 Every body is beautiful! IS LA ROCHELLE WORTH VISITING?🇫🇷 I was looking back through some of my old travels and remembered a very short day trip to La Rochelle - so is it actually worth visiting and how much can you actually do with 12 hours in the city?🏰 This beautiful walled city is a haven for lovers of architecture, history or the sea. The old stone walls and ancient bridges make it feel like you're strolling through a fairy tale. Walk outside of the walls and you'll find golden sand beaches with turquoise waters lapping at the shoreline 🏖 Antiquing is a huge part of the city's culture - visit the regular outdoor markets or explore some of the many vintage homeware shops to find incredible treasures 💎 There's a massive foodie culture in the city - you'll find restaurants everywhere, proudly offering French food as well as global cuisine. Week 5/52 - a tale of two halves... ☕️🌊 I'm still very much on the "must do everything right now" grind - trying to keep on top of YouTube uploads, writing, Instagram, spring cleaning/emptying our house out, and trying to do some fun things in between. Very much productive but not particularly 'gram worthy right now 🤷🏻♀️ Having said that, on Saturday we picked up our favourite furry companion, went out for lunch & had our first beach walk of the year! A full rainbow appeared too, just to brighten our day even more 🌈 Ted's getting to be an old man now, so after a day in the sunshine he didn't fancy any adventuring on Sunday. Instead we stayed in, did some baking, played some games & built some lego 🧁 After a cosy weekend I feel reset and ready to tackle this week, but with Ted staying who knows how much work I'll get done. Eating out is not always what you were expecting…William wanted pasta so we went to L’osteria… I LOVE food and drink and LOVE sharing all the things I eat and drink on here on social media…but the same way I show you all the fab ones I do need to call out the very ‘rare’ occasion that it does not live up to the expectations: Fist red flag, we ordered wine and they brought us the bottle already opened (rather than to open it in front of us). For a Valpolicella 2021 the wine was weak and bland, and tasted like cheap wine that had been refilled (not worth £34.50) William said his carbonara (with an extra of chicken) was very bland James pizza was just bizarre: it was a Caesar pizza; most part of it didn’t even have toppings and the bits that did were either overcooked chicken or lettuce (which he said some had gone off) My tortelloni with ham and cream was nice (if a bit on the salty side) William ate most of it and we dipped the empty pieces of pizza in this sauce The only thing that may have redeemed it was the limoncello…but it was not served cold! We have been to Sorrento (Gulf of Naples/Amalfi Coast) where limoncello originates from and it’s always supposed to be served chilled (most places had it in the freezer) Oh and the didn’t even remembered to bring the water we had ordered for the table! I remember coming with people from work 2-3 years ago and it was all good, so what has happened? PS: only as I looked into this restaurant online for this post I realised this is part of a chain/franchise, so maybe that’s the issue? This was not worth the £107 we paid.
Bristol by day….and by night! 🌝 Bristol Lights Festival launches across the city centre today. Between now and 11th February you’ll find weird and wonderful light installations illuminating the dark nights. Ranging from stunning to admire from afar to fully immersive, Bristol Lights Festival is one of my favourite winter activities in the city ✨ As well as several brand new installations, the famous swings will be back! I’m hoping it’ll be third time lucky this year and I’ll finally get chance to see them 🌈 Swipe through for a few previews and the map of installations. Week 4 of 52…the week of coffee shops, apparently ☕️😅 Another week spent chained to my laptop - this is the busiest January I’ve ever had and I’m both thankful and exhausted, and also wondering if these posts are still interesting? I wanted to give a look into the life of a freelancer & blogger but I feel like I’m going through a really boring patch right now 😅 Having said that, the loveliest weekend made up for a dull week. Saturday was a lazy but productive day - I’m very much back on the “let’s sell everything we own” train in an attempt to feel better about life. Sunday marked a year in our house, and we decided to use the day to do something fun in the sunshine instead of being sad. I’ve wanted to walk the railway path in Warmley since I photographed the signal box re-opening 10 years ago (wow I feel old!). It’s not a place we can easily get to from our home town, so it was nice to enjoy a benefit of being a bit closer to the city 🥰 Warmley Signal Box and @warmley_waiting_room are two of the best preserved buildings along the old Bristol-Bath railway line. Even though the tracks are long gone, the train station platform is still there and you can walk the path that the trains once took. From Warmley it’s 8 miles in either direction to Bristol or Bath. Highly recommend it for a wander in the sunshine, especially with a cake and coffee stop in the middle of your walk 🍰 🌞 This week hasn’t been a particularly exciting one, but it’s reminded me the power that your own mind can have. Choosing to get outside and see the good, when the easier option was to wallow, made the world of difference and has me feeling very thankful 💛 How was your week?🌻 . . A U T I S M S U P P O R T 🙏 Now, if you've been reading my stories recently, you'll have already seen some of these comments. But I thought I'd share it on here too, with the original tiktok posts, to highlight this even more. My intention with these two posts was to share my own experience of autism, having been diagnosed as an adult and missing a lot of the signs growing up. The main sign for me was not being able to hear in classrooms, or by roads etc, so I wanted to include that. And I preface these with the fact that many of these attributes can be neurotypical, but in excess could lead to a neurodivergent diagnosis. I know I'm no expert and can only speak from my own experience, but I feel like comments like these can be really damaging. Especially hating on self-diagnosed individuals. It took sooo long for me to get diagnosed and was a very stressful experience, I understand why people don't want to. Please don't belittle them for that 🙏 I know I'm focusing on a lot of hate, but I'd rather call it out, as these comments have definitely knocked me 😞 even though I try to laugh them off. Saying that, I've received sooo many comments of support too!
