Marathon #7 and Boston #3 🦄 was one of the hardest things I’ve accomplished in my 33 years of life. I contemplated quitting several times, stopped to walk multiple times, and very quickly saw full medical tents with lots of heat induced issues. I accidentally dropped my salt tablets at mile 5 and had to quickly pivot my race plan. In the 3:29:50 that I was on the course, I wondered what life choices I made that got me to my 3rd patriots day race in Boston. I felt defeated after the best marathon build I’ve had since becoming a long distance athlete. As @bromka said, “the marathon owes you nothing” and that rings so true to my marathon Monday experience as well as many of my 30,000 running friends. I’m choosing to give myself time to process all of the feelings and giving myself extra grace that despite my incredible fitness, the weather in Boston was uncontrollable, not PR kind of weather. To the spectators that showed up BY THE MASSES and were cheering for me every step of the way, thank you! To my mom, family, and friends that supported me along the course, thank you. And to my coach, @perkins.coaching who not only took my frantic call at mile 8, but also would never let me give up doing what I love because of one “not so good race,” thank you. It feels too early to think about next year, but I’m sure I’ll be back. Until then, it’s time to get back to work. Tomorrow I run Boston… The Super Bowl of the six world Major Marathons. And the only Major the entire field has to qualify for. Not only do you have to qualify, due to the limited size of the field and large number of qualifying applications, the race organisers (@teambaa) then lower the cut-off times until they eliminate enough people to meet the max number of participants. This year you had to be 5 and half minutes faster than your category qualifying time. Some people never run fast enough to even meet the initial qualifying time, so I’m buzzing to make it passed the cut-off and into the field. 18 months of running, racing, training, rehabbing and planning, for tomorrow. I’m loving seeing all the posts and pre-race excitement leading into tomorrow’s @bostonmarathon. So many worked so hard to earn the privilege to run this incredible race that’s steeped in so much lore and history. I still get goosebumps thinking back five years ago to my first Boston marathon. Definitely an experience like no other! That said, I’ll admit I’m feeling a tiny bit sorry for myself that I’m missing out on this year’s fun. I know my bib number and the corral and start time I would have launched from tomorrow. But unfortunately I’ll have a DNS on my record as I decided to stay home and instead save what I would have spent on Boston travel and hotels to put towards my trip to the Paris Olympics later this year to run the Marathon Pour Tous. While there may be other opportunities for me to run the Boston Marathon again sometime, I think the chance to run the #MarathonPourTous at the Olympics will be a once in a lifetime occasion. BOSTON MARATHON RECAP Part 3 Liz…💙💛🦄 Only a few more miles left. The miles were going by and I couldn’t believe it was almost over. I was getting tired around miles 22 and 23. Those were my slowest miles. But again those crowds 🫶🏻 were so incredible and helped me so much!! I smiled so much hearing my name yelled all there out the course. So glad we had written our names on our arms. I saw the Citco sign and that was awesome!!! Then being under it and a mile away made me smile so big!! The crowds got really big here. Then right on Hereford, left on Boyleston 💙💛💙💛 and that turn was like nothing else!!! Biggest smiles!!! The finish line was still a ways away but honestly it didn’t feel too far. I was soaking in that big moment. What a feeling it was! I can’t even describe it in words but a moment I’m always going to remember. Emotional!! I was going to finish this marathon…I was here…I was running Boston…a marathon of blood, sweat & tears to get there. This was it!!!! Then getting to that finish and crossing over the line !!!! The most amazing, incredible, emotional, happy moment!!!! No other race will ever top what I felt!!!💙💛 I took some photos at the finish and kind of made my way further to the medals. Then to get that medal put around my neck 🩷🩷🩷 I got to see Anna soon after and we hugged and were so happy for each other. I was so glad they gave us emergency blankets because I was getting so cold. Anna said my lips were white & I felt like I wanted to puke for a while. Ahhh that wasn’t fun but it didn’t last long. I was glad that feeling went away. The shivers did not go though and it was hard walking to get to our gear bags….it felt like my bus was miles away haha! We headed over to the warming bus & sat on that bus for a bit & that was heaven!! Oh how I loved that bus!! Somehow we made it to the train slowly going down steps hugging onto the handles on the stairs. 🤣 That was pretty comical. And somehow we made it back to our hotel. And later we’d celebrate with our husbands at a nice Italian restaurant. Boston you have my heart!! Cannot wait to be back!! 💙💛
There is something indescribable about the magic of the Boston marathon and earning the desired unicorn medal🦄! Throwing it back to 2 weeks ago when I ran my 5th marathon and 2nd Boston Marathon 💙💛with some of these cool cats! From the lobster rolls to the sunny afternoon Red Sox game with a side of icecream, it was another fun week in Boston! While I’ll wait to recount my race until I decide on my official race photos (thanks to the rain and the post finish line vomit, they weren’t as good this year), the race was still a dream come true. A dream that took a lot of grit, determination, and curiosity on an infamous patriots day! I’m grateful for many things leading up to that day: my body and it’s ability to recover, my coach who has never stopped believing in me (even after “bad” races), my family and biggest support system who constantly refresh the tracking app until I finish the race, the running friends who make the miles fly by, and my HCJ crew. Those finish line feels 🤘🏃🏻♀️🦄 Boston this year was wild! Another BQ for the books & my 10th marathon! Although this was not my fastest Boston as I had planned for coming off a marathon PR in the fall.. I finished with a newfound confidence, happiness, & pride. I surprised myself at the time I ran with very little training and my longest speed workout being a couple 2 min pick ups. It goes to show how much the body remembers. ⚠️ long post continues ⚠️ I set a goal with my coach to not go faster than a certain mile split to ensure that I would finish strong and healthy. I also wanted to at least get another BQ! After starting to get nervous on the bus about whether I could make it point to point, fearing my foot would randomly hurt or just being unable to finish due to lack of training/being out of shape for myself - I dropped those thoughts and reminded myself to enjoy every step and every mile that is the Boston Marathon. I knew deep down I had enough base to go the distance and knew my body well enough that I was healthy enough to go the distance. I also had friends to support each other in reaching our goals on race day!! I chatted with friends and fellow runners, listened to a great playlist, soaked in all the cheers and waves from spectators, and ended up having a 10/10 day!!! 🦄 I’m extremely happy that I am finally healthy enough to not only run pain free, but to run a marathon pain free!! If you’ve been through an injury, you know how extremely hard it is to not be able to enjoy your passion and run. Although the time period I took off felt like forever, I am grateful for it and it seems like a tiny blip now that it’s over. I needed the rest, rehab and cross training to return back to running. I’m very thankful to @fyf_coaching for working with me and trusting in each other throughout this process! I’m also so grateful for the support and undying belief in me from my husband & to all my friends & family who believed in me and rooted for me leading up to the race! 💙💛 From here we build it back again. 🏃🏻♀️💪❤️

The normalized graded pace came out to be 6:07 pace per mile. With a smart pacing and nutrition plan having never run Boston she wa able to kick things up a notch and race the last 6.6 miles with a 6:08 pace which was a 5:53 NG Pace. In 2020, Abby was struck from behind at 80 mph by a drunk drive while on duty with the City of Tyler Police Department, now a police officer in Montana. She has gone through extensive surgery, a traumatic brain injury and worked extremely hard and diligently through rehab, strength training with the Christus Human Performance Center and of course run training :) She's more motivated than ever to pursuing the dream. Ten years later. A decade of living since 4.15.13 Lives that hung in the balance when we met. Lives that were lost. I can’t imagine losing any of you. So much LIFE has happened for each of us. Marriage, divorce, babies, jobs gained, jobs lost, fleeting friendships, new homes, homes sold , many (many) miles of running, and laughter. So much laughter. Laughter through tears, through pain, through “dancing it out”, from all over the world, and right at home. Every year that passes we chose to celebrate LIFE with each other on April 15th instead of focusing too much on the horrible thing that brought us together, but the truth is we’re bound by this day. Bound by the depth of the physical and emotional pain we endured, by the fragility of our spirits when our city was violated. Bound by the resiliency we chose to focus on, instead of accepting defeat. Ten years later, we’ve been woven together in way that feels tried and true, weathered but beautiful. Life with each of you has taught me more than I ever knew was possible. ✨My road to Tokyo Marathon 2023 and six star medal - Boston Marathon 2021 and my 5th star ✨ I still remember the morning after my third London Marathon 2021 - I woke up and got an email that I got a national interest exemption from the US Olympics and IOC to travel to the USA for my 1st Boston marathon - it was one week before Boston and I cried tears of joy. It was not sure if I could run Boston because there was a travel ban between USA and Europe! I called my family and shared the great news with them. I was one of few German runners who were allowed to run the 125th Boston marathon in October 2021! I bet it was an unique lifetime experience - running a Boston marathon in October for the first time in history! I still remember the beautiful autumn vibe in Boston, the pumpkin patches and colorful leaves along the course! I also had the honor to run 10 miles with Shalane Flanagan! Crossing the finish line, getting a bright and golden big unicorn medal and getting interviewed by my friend @lornasportelle made my Boston experience very special. My biggest thanks also goes to @michael_koball who made my first Boston experience stunning, too. I will never forget the amazing atmosphere there and I will come back very soon. With Boston marathon I claimed my fifth star and from there it was pretty clear Tokyo marathon will be the last major for my six star! After a long wait of 3 years it’s finally happening! This year was the 126th @bostonmarathon but only the 50th year that women were officially allowed to register. In 1967, Katherine Switzer registered as K. Switzer. When it was discovered that a woman was trying to race, some men TRIED to take her down. Finally in 1972, 8 women were officially allowed to register to run the Boston Marathon. 5 of them were with us in Boston, including K. Switzer. Not long after I crossed the finish line, I actually was face to face with Katherine Switzer and I got to personally thank her. Oh man. This race. What this race takes from your body, it gives back to your heart. This race trashes your legs, but it raises your spirits. Heartbreak Hill is true heart break, but Newton fills it with love. No one told me about that hill in Brookline. Unmatched support. Course was packed and hilly in the second half with Newton and Heartbreak Hill. Threw up my nutrition after Heartbreak at 21. Porta potty at 22.5. (No excuses i was dialed in for everything. Legs were getting trashed) With sub 3:00 off the table I wanted to remember every yard to the finish and soak in the atmosphere and I’m glad I did. Boston Marathon Round 3 on deck this weekend - LET’S GO!! 🏃🏼♀️🦄 2 live Bostons (2019 & 2021) in the books, 1 virtual (2020), and coming into my 3rd live Boston this upcoming Monday! I’m super excited (but of course have all the pre-race nerves and jitters) for this race because this is the first time I’m showing up to Boston a) not sick with the stomach flu like in 2019, b) not coming off an injury of plantar fasciitis & damaged peroneal tendon like in 2021, but healthy this time. I may not be in the best racing shape quite yet that I have been in before, but I am in the best Boston shape compared to the previous years. 🤞🏻 I can’t wait to take on the streets with all of my fellow running friends and to finish the race this time knowing I showed up at the start line healthy. @bostonmarathon acceptance emails are here! 🙌 I shed happy tears reading my acceptance email earlier this year, knowing I had a memorable summer ahead of training in beautiful places with beautiful humans. Those same tears (3x) found themselves rolling down my face in the first half of the race. High-fiving kids (what pandemic? 😬) and soaking in racing my A goal pace (and literally, soaking in my clothes at this point 😆), running strong and having fun! Then, the humidity and the reality of a tough second half hit and I was purely focused on crossing the finish line. I managed to narrowly run a PR and another BQ time 😅. Finish Line Friday - “that smile” edition 😁 This picture is my favorite out of the several dozens of photos received from the BAA. My smile sums up the joy of finally seeing a long awaited dream achieved. 22 months between marathons - 15 years in the making from my first run. I did it! I managed to pull off a PR among challenging weather + foot pain + those hillls. 🎉 Looks can be deceiving, much of Monday’s race was an uphill battle. I had a shoe + foot malfunction around mile 10, hit the humidity wall around the half way point and the marathon wall sometime after mile 18. This is what I call type 2 fun! 😂 When things look dark, continue to move forward. Boston Marathon #11. This took everything I had today. This course can truly test you with all the hills in the 2nd half. First time I had even half splits, even though everything hurt from the waist down from the start…. I just kept thinking of Max and telling myself 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣. And when it hurt more, I repeated in my head: 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙪𝙥, 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙤 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤𝙩. Max was in my heart the entire way. 🐾 THANK YOU everyone for your encouragement as it kept me going. I am beyond grateful to have run Boston in 2015.💙💛 I first felt the itch to run after the events in 2013 and the impact it had on people very close to me. 🍼I was 7 1/2 months pregnant with my son at the time but I vowed to run Boston as soon as I could. I ran through a divorce. I ran through snow and rain. And I didn’t listen to anyone who doubted me. I ignored the comments, the side eye because when I crossed the finish line the nay sayers were nowhere in sight. 🙌🏼 I’m glad I didn’t wait because a car accident in 2018 which resulted in spine surgery took away my ability to run that distance anymore. If I hadn’t acted when I did Boston may be a lost dream. Instead it has a special place in my heart, an accomplishment no one can take from me and a deep connection to a place and people that will never be lost.

One year ago I got an email from @daceofhrts... “we love your involvement with community and your passion for running and helping others and we’d like to talk to you about possibly joining the @hylandspowered BUILDERS team and running @bostonmarathon” 💙💛... I was 39w 2d pregnant... 1 year later... I am planning my sons birthday party, I am a member of the INCREDIBLE Hylands family. 2013 was the last time I ran the Boston Marathon. As many of you may recall, that was the bombing year. I was planning to run this race this year hoping for a more “normal” Boston experience ....and then 2020 happened 😆 The race was postponed from April to September and then was ultimately canceled and replaced with a virtual run. My plan when I headed out my door this morning was to run a nice, easy long training run. With temps in the low 50s and no wind, the weather was unbeatable today. Even after racing last Sunday, I felt pretty good so about 10 miles in I started contemplating running 26.2 to count as my virtual Boston Marathon. At mile 16 I committed and called @reganfeit to bring some more gels and water and she came through - she’s the best! Finished in the Luverne city park where the yellow painted speed bumps reminded me of that iconic Boston Marathon finish line 😍 I had not run long since exactly a month ago on Aug. 5th where I put in 18 miles and then my last 20 miler was mid-July so I had no intentions of “racing” this virtual race. I just kept things easy so I could feel good the entire way.
