This week, we are thinking about how we can 'fix' our friendships and how giving and receiving an apology feels. We are reading 'Sorry' by Barry Timms. It follows best friends, Scribble and Hoot, who, despite being inseparable, have a falling out when they decide to move in together. Their differences, which had always made them close, separated them. The children have used the characters to retell the story and added their own speech/thoughts of how they would deal with the dispute. They have created their own tools, and we have discussed how we can 'fix' friendships when we have had a fall-out. Let's stick together by Smriti Halls is a lovely book about a very, seemingly, confident squirrel who wants to plan a party for his friend. When it comes to the big day, squirrel feels totally overwhelmed, and his friend, Bear, helps him through it. We will be thinking about who helps us when we feel lost, who we can rely on to support us when things feel tough and how we can recognise when we need help. International Literacy Day takes place on September 8 every year to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities as well as globally. I love reading. And I make sure my kids every academic year, know I love reading. Mrs Barnbrook’s box of books (I also love alliteration) has been around a few years now, and every term I switch the books around. All books that I have read and loved and can chat about with the kids. Here's a little throwback to the Book Day celebrations: Olimpijska students spent a fascinating day participating in a book-related city game in and around the Saxon Garden. I still cannot wrap my mind around the act of FL/DeSantis banning African American history being taught. I am confused for every story about a classroom and library without ANY books. #10days10books - I am a day behind but hey 🤷♀️ I read #aninspectorcalls in secondary school (it's technically a play but hey) and I genuinely still think about it sometimes. How you can influence others life, how it may not be too late to be a good influence - I need to re read this for sure and watch the play - that would be amazing! Then in college I read #belovedbytonimorrison and I actually didn't really like it at first - I guess because I can be a HSP reader. This #WorldBookDay we made a very special visit to one of our school projects! In March 2020 we helped Brimsdown Primary School create a cosy and colourful library space and we stacked the shelves so that pupils had somewhere special and inspiring to read and share their favourite books! Because of the pandemic our visit was delayed but we were finally able to experience the magic for ourselves on World Book Day 2022! It was great to see the library in full swing, not least because the local community library has since shut down, so it was clear to see how special this space was to the children. This is a long post, but I’m not going to apologise as it’s something I think is really important. I came across these amazing books last year and Sebastian and Lucas love them! The @wildtribeheroes books are written by a lovely Cornish author called Ellie who is writing the world's number one selling true book series about real environmental issues such as ocean plastic, balloon releases, fishing nets, palm oil and climate change. A great way for children to learn about these issues, the books use a gentle and positive approach without upsetting or overwhelming them. The books have already reached over 1.5 million children in schools across the UK and have received personal support from Sir David Attenborough. Ellie would love to get these books in all schools and I’m fully on board with that idea. In fact I’m going to do everything I can to get the books in all primary schools in Bishop’s Stortford, Cayman and the Alligator Pond area of Jamaica. We've had some lovely feedback from some of our viewers and also some helpful feedback in those earlier months too, suggesting things like regularly creating content that appeals to both boys and girls (our first two videos were heavily based on female characters).
