Hey y’all!! If you guys don’t already know me, my name is Sean Ochiagha, and I was a Class of 2022 graduate from Rutgers University that was accepted into medical school this past cycle. As some of y’all know, I love to document my life, especially aspects relating to my career. I decided to create this page to blog my journey from the start of medical school to eventually becoming an attending physician. Don’t worry, I will still be creating YouTube videos/vlogs relating to medicine whether it’s premed or medical school and beyond! With that being said, everything relating to medicine including my YouTube channel will be on this page instead of my main page. This past application cycle had a lot of highs and lows. But with the help of family and friends, I am so blessed to receive three acceptances and counting! As of right now, I am still waiting on two schools. But once I get those decisions back, I will be making an announcement! Y’all ain’t ready for the vision I have!! 🔥🙏🏾⚕️ #premed #medicalschool #urm #blackmedstudent #medstudent #urmdoc #minoritiesinmedicine #physician #classof2028

Medschool would not be the same without these people! I appreciate you! I celebrate you! I’m proud of you! TO and I did Mind and Body Medicine in 2nd semester and have been on this mental health and wellness journey together ever since. 🤎 🔐 PN came up to me when I was crying in the anatomy lab 🥲 💀 semester 1 and has been my big sis ever since. 🔐💛 TQ and I were waiting in line week 2 of medschool and were honest about how overwhelmed we were and we’ve been holding space for each other ever since. 👯🧡 I checked-in on RM when she was not doing okay on the shuttle bus in semester 1 and then she was my rock throughout Step 1 dedicated period. 💞🪨 EN another fellow Mind and Body medicine friend and who gave me the best advice for confidence on step 1! 💛😇 I hope you too get to do life in medschool with a tribe like mine. Let’s keep making the med community a better place by looking out for one another and being honest about our experiences. You never know how one moment of kindness or vulnerability can change someone else’s life by making them know they’re not alone. • • • #adedayoandwellness #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #medschool #medstudent #premed #whitecoat #firstyearmedstudent #doctor #medstudentlife #clinicalrotations #medschoolmotivation #medschoollife #premedmotivation #medschoolproblems #usmlestep1 #womeninmedicine #blackdoctor #blackmedstudent #melanindoc #reseaudocteur #blackgirlwhitecoat #minoritiesinmedicine #blackexcellence #blackwellnessbloggers #mentalhealth #mentalwellnessjourney #healthandwellness #blackgirlmagic #medschoolgraduation #graduation2024

/ ~ Wellness is…. taking it one day at a time ~ / For the past few days the thoughts of everything ahead of me in MS4 have slowly been creeping in on me. At first, it was just a passing wave of nervousness but as the days progressed it became more pronounced and I had to take a moment to: 1) 🎯 Name it - Anxiety + fear 2) 📝 Revisit my to-do list and meet with my school advisor 3) 🙏🏾 pray about it. • I feel a little more better having confronted it and asked for guidance. I logged on to Twitter today and saw a response to my comment under the MATCH timeline @the_aafp posted few days ago and was reminded that the best and only thing to do, is to take it one day at a time. • So whether is mini exams, STEP, ERAS or whatever else you have going on I hope you remember to just take it task by task, hour by hour, day by day. We got this! 🧡 • • • • • #adedayoandwellness #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #medschool #medstudent #premed #whitecoat #firstyearmedstudent #doctor #medstudentlife #clinicalrotations #medschoolmotivation #medschoollife #premedmotivation #medschoolproblems #usmlestep1 #womeninmedicine #blackdoctor #eras #blackmedstudent #melanindoc #matchday #blackgirlwhitecoat #minoritiesinmedicine #blackwellnessbloggers #burnout #mentalwellnessjourney #healthandwellness #wellnesswednesdays #anxietydepression #overwhelmed Anyone else needing to just take it one day at a time 🕰️ ? ☺️

Part 3: Dog Mom first, Doctor next, Baddie immediately after 😚❤️‍🔥 5 more days until I walk across that stage to be officially referred to as DOCTOR. Remember to take a chance on yourself & work hard at what you want because you never know what you can really accomplish until you try. Courage, hard work, determination, tears, perseverance, faith, dreams, confidence, prayers - those are all things that got me this far. It’s never too late to count yourself in. 🫡 P.s. Shoutout to my fur baby who’s been there to comfort me, love on me, and keep me company through it all. Mommy loves you, Sophie. Part 2: Today was my last day of my last rotation of my last year of medical school. What a blessing it is to be here!🥹 To VCOM-Auburn: Thank you for taking the chance on this little young Black lady from the South. Soon, I’ll be joining the 2.8% Black woman physicians and the 10.7% Black OBGYNs in the field. I put my best foot forward, shared my dream and vision, (then prayed really really hard. Shoutout to God🙏🏽.), and my potential shined through. I’m so grateful to have come here to learn the things I learned, meet the people I met, experience the moments I experienced. I grew SO much over the last 4 years in both my professional life and personal life, and I am just grateful to have survived and made it. Doctor Barbie takes AMEC! 💕 Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending my first Annual Medical Education Conference hosted by @snma_official During the conference, I had the opportunity to network, learn from physicians, make new friends & reconnect with old ones! This experience reaffirmed my why and has given me tools that will help me navigate the next steps of my training. It was truly inspiring to be surrounded by so many doctors and future doctors who look like me. This was my reminder that representation matters and that I’m living in (several) answered prayers. Thank you, God! Until the next! 🩺

5 years later and the last time I’ll go into a hospital and introduce myself as the medical student 🥺 My under eyes are a little darker and I have a few more gray hairs to add to my collection but otherwise it is LAST day of school vibes 🎉🥺💅👩🏾‍🎓✨🤩🙏🏾 . I’m so grateful I did an ICU rotation before I graduated. It was honestly one of my biggest fears in medical school which exponentially grew after losing my cousin last year and dealing with the aftermath of the trauma I experienced in the ICU at that time. I learned so much medicine but most importantly learned so much about MYSELF and my resilience in the face of uncertainty and imposter syndrome. I’m so grateful for the residents and fellows I worked with who really took care of us med students and often sent us home early in the name of self care. You all are who I hope to be in the (very near!!) future. . And for now…. The countdown to match begins 🥲 . #medicalstudent #fourthyearmedicalstudent #blackmedstudent #match2024 #medicalschool #medschool #resilienceinmedicine #medstudent

Post from your favorite Med Student. It’s my 2nd year here at AUA Why so far ? -I have some experiences to get -I needed to see a different perspective of life -I needed to go away to prove that I can do this That’s why! Am I ok ? Yes I am wonderful! I want to shine light on myself: Founder and VP the Internal Medicine Club on campus ✨ High passing my exams ✨ On the right track to success all in a foreign country ✨ God hears and answers my prayers ✨ Oh & 💋 , NO KIDS 😂 Seriously I’m proud of myself didn’t realize how hard I’ve been working. I’m not all fun and games. Tbh I barely have fun 😂😂😂 My grind is different. I used to complain and had low confidence but I see that I’ll be alright. Quote that helps me through most of my days: “Today is today. Tomorrow is tomorrow. Don’t worry about tomorrow when today is still today” silly but keeps the stress away 🥲 Thanks for reading!!! #igotthis #godisgood #gohard #medstudentlife #blackgirlmedicine #blackmedstudent

Psych 🧠🤪 Recap: 🧠: 4 weeks total in Geriatrics, Addiction, Child, and Involuntary Units 🧠: Community/Safety Net Hospital 🧠: lots of variation in cases ✔️PROS: • SHORT hours • Lots of chances to learn • Great residents ❌CONS: • too many drugs to learn • a lot of emotional depth • some patients don’t have insight (think they’re perfectly fine) so it makes patient care difficult • most paperwork I’ve seen residents have to document since I started rotations (could be wrong about this) I can 100% understand why people like psych and go into it. There are parts of the speciality that made me think hmmm, could psych be that girl 😂. Overall I really enjoyed this rotation. I saw things I didn’t think I’d ever see in my life- literally things that come straight out of movies. This felt like a full circle rotation since I’ve taken various psych classes since high school and finally got to see these cases in practice. I grew a new found appreciation for psychiatric physicians and anyone who works in the field (social workers, nurses, etc). This field can be so emotionally taxing but at the same time very rewarding. Till next time psych ✌🏾 #medstudentLoLo

Muggle in Medicine 🩺 Hi! I’m Milan and welcome to muggle in medicine. So many people tell me they couldn’t make it in medical school, that they aren’t smart enough etc. “If I can do it, anyone can do it” is always my response. I will be the first physician in my family. I had a non traditional path to medicine - studying business in undergrad, doing a post bacc, working in social media/branding before school. Along the way, I took my MCAT 3x, I applied late in the application cycle, I was told like many of the people who look like me that medicine was not for me. I’m starting this page to share my journey in medicine, to show people that if I can do it… anyone can. I hope that this can be a meeting place for those of us that may feel like “muggles” in the medical journey or just the general life journey as well. So if you’ve ever felt different, ever felt like you couldn’t do it, ever felt like you didn’t know what step to take, ever felt a little muggle like… welcome 😊 #premed #premedlife #premedmotivation #medstudent #medschool #medicalschool #medicalstudent #blackmedstudent #blackinmedicine #motivation #myjourney #medblog

Surgery 🪡👩🏾‍⚕️✨ - Recap: 🪡 8 weeks total 🪡 Community Hospital 🪡 Mainly underserved population 🪡 Lots of slow days for a surgery rotation - ✔️PROS: • being in the OR everyday • morning rounds are less than an hour 😂 • complexity of cases • multiple specialties and avenues • ability to network and learn a lot as a student - ❌ CONS: • EARRLLYY mornings • some of the culture and various personalities • relearning anatomy 😂 - Shoutout to @mymdmoments for this brilliant format of doing post rotation recaps/post. I definitely walked in a little terrified I was gonna hate surgery so much I’d have to pick a different specialty to go into. We thank God that didn’t happen and I fell more in love with the field. I had the opportunity to work with various specialist and learn more about their fields. && lastly, I LOVEEDD a sub specialty I never even considered. Cheers to the future and forever loving surgery. #medstudentLoLo

✨TRANSPARENCY POST 🫥 ✨ The first picture in this thread is the face of a depressed medical student…. Yea I know hard to tell with the smile and everything but yeaa that was my life… a depressed medical student going through the motions in the hopes that the motions alone would yield fruitful results …. Well I was wrong! This was a pretty low time in my life, but when I look back on it now, I see exactly what God was doing. I would have never seen the gap I am now so eager to fill if I had not attended medical school, and I would never have such great insight into the plight of the black medical student. The next pictures are adventures I took in my transition into my PhD. I spent time doing a little bit of everything from working at a residential high school to visiting friends I hadn’t seen since college. I even go married. I was focused on finding my happiness in things I could control by any means necessary which lead me straight to making this page. This journey helped me to find my place in the world again. I started to connect back with purpose and gain a true understanding of how can I serve those around me. I finally figured out how I would make my impact and I haven’t looked back sense. I may have been depressed when I started this transformation, but now I’m happier than ever seeing that when God has a purpose for your life nothing, not even your own selfish desires can stop it! Have you experienced a failure at the moment that you now see as a blessing? This book was my first read of 2023 and I really liked it! The romance was not rushed at all and I like that it was very realistic. I’m not a med student but I do follow some on social media (shoutout to all the future doctors! 🩺🥼) and I can tell it can be very hard to juggle school, having a social life and enough hours of sleep. As a child of immigrants, some parents can put a lot of pressure on us to succeed and to kind of be "perfect" and to find the ideal husband, of course they only want the best for you, but it can be… kinda too much.. I love the dedication that @shirlywhirlmd wrote, my favourite part : "For all my girls who spent their youth reading about other people falling in love and making no effort whatsoever to experience it themselves. This one is for y’all." As a 21 year old girl, late bloomer and hopeless romantic, who never experienced what it feels like to be loved or fall in love yet, thank you 🫶🏾 • • #onrotation #onrotationshirleneobuobi #shirleneobuobi #books #booksreview #reading #angieappiah #rickygutierrez #ghana #ghanaianbooks #bookcommunity #bookworm #youngadultbooks #greysanatomy #booksta #bookalicious #blackbookiish #canadianbookstagram #canadianbookstagrammer #blackbook #blackmedstudent #medicine #medstudent #blackgirlsrock #blackbookstagrammer #blackbookstagram #bookaddicted #bookaddict #booktoker #booktokcanada

New Orleans had been a time. Currently doing a social medicine rotation here and the population is vastly different from what I am used to. I am absolutely loving the southern hospitality and the food had been unreal. The start of October has brought a wave of new experiences. • I attended my first National Fried Chicken Conference • I ate my first po’boy • I rode my first streetcar • I tried frog legs (likely my last time) • I submitted ERAS 🥳🥳 swipe to see how I felt the day of Practicing medicine in the South had been an experience, both good and bad. But I’m grateful for the chance to meet new people and make a difference wherever I am. #nationalfriedchickenfest #welltravelled #neworleansfood #neworleansculture #blackinmedicine #blackmed #blackmedstudent

Similar to my previous post, I am highlighting different ethnicities. For K, we have Keratosis. “Seborrheic keratosis is a common benign (noncancerous) skin growth. It tends to appear in middle age and you may get more as you get older. Seborrheic keratoses are not pre-cancerous, but they can resemble other skin growths that are. “ - Cleveland Clinic. "Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man, but soon or late the man who wins is the man who thinks he can" This weekend I received my white coat, signifying my transition into my clinical years at school. There are so many instances along this journey that I was told "no" ... when people tried to project their insecurities and shortcomings onto me. Had I let those moments define me, I wouldn't be able to share this precious moment with my friends, family, and classmates. Furthermore, with all of you who choose to support me and root for me. I am so thankful and I truly feel the real, genuine love this weekend. I am glad to say I am now accepting patients at school. In my sophomore year of college, I learned the poem "The Man Who Thinks He Can" by Sir Walter D. Wintle. To this day, this poem carries me through every adversity I face. The true gift that got me to this point isn't the brain, its the heart.. that brings you confidence, persistence, and resilience. If you take anything from me... let it be one thing: You can truly achieve ANYTHING you are willing to put the work into. 🥼 #dentalstudent #dentist #predental #predentalstudent #dentalschoolvlog #dentalschoolvlogger #whitecoat #whitecoatceremony #medicalstudent #blackmedstudent #blackmanwhitecoat

Last Friday I was invited to present my research at the 20th Annual Plastic Surgery Research Day at my home institution @pittplasticsurgery ! Gratitude is by far the word that summarizes this experience. Gratitude for my mentors and the inspiring words of encouragement from our guest speaker, Dr. Kevin Chung, Editor-in-Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. This is only the beginning!

Naturopathic Medical School update: Yesterday we took our clinic entry exam. Clinic entry is an assessment we take at the end of year 2 to demonstrate our ability to professionally engage with a patient, conduct a medical interview and show our ability to clinically rationalize and develop a differential diagnosis. I studied and prepared for weeks. Looking at naturopathic clinical diagnosis notes/lectures. Reminding myself of diagnoses and clinical signs I’d forgotten (or to be honest didn’t understand the first time). Read and talked through practice cases, practiced the physical exams so much I was dreaming about them! Yesterday was a whirl wind of emotions. Anxiety, doubt, and excitement. And I held it down! I passed and will be entering the Bastyr University Clinic this summer as NMS3 student clinician. One step closer to becoming Dr. Davida 💕 #naturopathicmedicalschool #naturopathy #naturopathicmedicalstudent #naturopathicmedicine #alternativemedicine #holistichealth #blackmedstudent #womeninmedicine #blackwomeninmedicine #medicalstudent

M1☑️☑️☑️ It feels so crazy to be done with my first year of medical school! I can honestly say that these pictures are an accurate reflection of my balance in school. I came in with the mindset that I wasn’t going to be consumed by school- I was determined to maintain all the stuff I loved outside of school. I am so blessed to be close to home because I’ve been able to see my family so much, and I know it’s contributed to maintaining my peace in the midst of the stress. I’m really proud of myself for staying active! I played in a basketball league and a volleyball league, even though our records are not up for discussion😵‍💫😂. I’m thankful I was able to meet such a cool group of people to be on this journey with for the next 3 years. I thank God everyday, but today I’m saying a special thank you for moving on to M2☺️🙌🏾! AFROMED got social last weekend Sunday, May 21st at the Tubman museum in Macon for the Pan-African Taste of Soul Jubilee. This was a celebration of the diversity of Afro heritage highlighting African, African-American, Afro-Latino/Hispanic and other Afro cultures by sharing authentic cuisine, fashion, art. It was great way to de stress, connect and engage with our community. Here are some highlights 🙂 #afromed #blackmedstudent #afrohealthandwellness

There are so many reasons to get your daily dose of sunshine. The one that’s most important for me is the benefits to our mood. Seasonal affective disorder is real and sunshine appears to be the cure for me. I have two favorite Naturopathic Principles: Doctor as teacher is probably my favorite because it embodies how I envision myself practicing after I graduate. I love that the message is to educate people and I feel like that needs to be a bigger part of all medical practices. I think patients deserve the respect of being treated as equals who are capable of making their own decisions given accurate information. Second is the healing power of nature. This is a favorite because of the duality of meaning I derive from it. Not only is NATURE (plants, the earth, water and sun) healing but also OUR nature. The body can heal itself of most if not all ailments given the right conditions. If you’re a naturopathic medicine enthusiast screenshot this and tell us what your favorite is! Be sure to tag me and @NMSABUSD so we can converse You can find a description of each principle two posts back on my page if you need! #nmsalife #natmedweek2023 #nMwBUSD2023 #naturopathicmedicalschool #naturopathy #naturopathicmedicalstudent #naturopathicmedicine #alternativemedicine #holistichealth #blackmedstudent #womeninmedicine #blackwomeninmedicine #medicalstudent

Primum Non Nocere, first do no harm. This principle essentially means that whatever treatment or intervention we employ should not do more harm than good! Naturopathic Doctors are trained to use the most natural interventions to promote healing first, and stronger more invasive treatment later. This principle does not mean ALL we believe in/use is natural treatment. If the case presentation requires higher force intervention that we cannot provide we are trained to know when to refer out so that the patients healing is always the central focus! Tolle Causam, identify and treat the cause. We believe that there is a time and place for symptom suppression in quality care and we never want our patients to suffer. In order to produce true healing we must figure out and treat that which is the cause of the unwanted symptoms. Tolle Totem, treat the whole person. As Naturopathic Doctors we understand and believe in the interconnectedness of our body, mind and spirit. Each of these must be in good condition or dis-ease arises. Furthermore, physical manifestations of disease may arise from issues not within the physical body. Our approach to care integrates the environment and lifestyle of our patients to promote total health. Our goal is to restore balance and health to the Whole person. …IG Said my caption was too long, read the rest of he description in the first comment! What are your thoughts on the naturopathic principles? As a naturopathic doctor or student which do resonate with the most? As a future patient of a naturopathic doctor which do you believe would be the most influential in your care? Leave a comment or DM me to chat! #nmsalife #natmedweek2023 #nMwBUSD2023 #naturopathicmedicalschool #naturopathy #naturopathicmedicalstudent #naturopathicmedicine #alternativemedicine #holistichealth #blackmedstudent #womeninmedicine #blackwomeninmedicine #medicalstudent

Oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfast meals now, however it wasn’t always! For it used to be a weird texture and really bland. Through experimenting with different plant milks (almond, cashew and now coconut) I found that each gives a slightly different texture and coconut milk gives a mild flavor difference. Spices like cinnamon add flavor as well. Some days I also enjoy oatmeal with vanilla extract added. Hope this gives you inspiration to experiment with food you may have decided was not for you, I did and was not disappointed! I’d also love to hear what your favorite breakfast meals are! #nmsalife #natmedweek2023 #nMwBUSD2023 #oatmealrecipe #sprinklesprinkle #foodphoto #naturopathicmedicalschool #naturopathy #naturopathicmedicalstudent #naturopathicmedicine #alternativemedicine #holistichealth #blackmedstudent #womeninmedicine #blackwomeninmedicine #medicalstudent

It’s been about a month since #amec and I think I’m still on cloud 9. What an honor it was to be surrounded by black and brown individuals with the same end goal of being a physician. Medicine is hard, can feel lonely at times and the trauma bonds become so real 😂. But during AMEC I not only felt seen, but loved and appreciated. All in all, the journey continues and I couldn’t be more thankful for my AMEC being apart of my journey. #medstudentLoLo
