@lea_l0v3ly ・・・ It's finally here! In a few hours I officially become Dr. LeaAnn Alisha Love, MD (Even though I’ve technically had my degree for months lol) πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ In a little over 8 hours, I’ll be joining a small percentage of Black Physicians in the United States. Joining the less than 5% of Blacks physicians is truly an honor and a privilege, and I don’t take this assignment lightly. My journey into medicine has not been linear or traditional. Most people don’t know this, but I did not grow up dreaming of becoming a physician. Yes, I played doctor with my dolls and would tell people I wanted l to be a doctor when I grew up but that was the extent of me considering medicine. Why? It’s simple. I believed becoming a physician was too ambitious and simply not an achievable goal. I didn’t have doctors that looked like me growing up and I surely didn’t know any personally. People I knew didn’t go to medical school and become doctors. I was interested in other fields and actually started undergrad with the goal of a different professional degree. I changed my major to PreMed while at Xavier. It was not until then that I realized what I was truly capable of and that I was operating from a place of fear. The experiences and education I received while at Xavier were the catalyst that led to this change. I am forever grateful for my HBCU! ⚜️⚜️ Xavier isn’t first for placing African Americans in Medical school for no reason! βšœοΈπŸ–€πŸ’›πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€βš•οΈ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ #XULA1925 #HBCUMade #XULA #XulaAlumni #1925society #AUCMED #RESIDENCY #Health #FamilyMedicine #FamilyMed #PGY1 #BabyDoctor #BabyDoctorLove #BlackDoctors #BlackDoctorsMatter #Medicine #Melanin #BlackExcellence #Whatadoctorlookslike #MedSchool #MedStudent #MedicalSchool #IMGdoc #DoctorsofInstagram #MelaninMed #DrLove #MelaninMD #WomeninMedicine #FemalePhysician #BlackDoctorWhiteCoat

This summer β˜€οΈI had the pleasure of being selected to participate in πŸ₯MSKCCs Summer Pipeline Program in which I was able to work alongside and learn from some of the brightest minds in oncological care. My research was focused on clinical trials and disparities in prostate cancer. I conducted literature reviews, surveys and witnessed patient consents. (And much more!!!) Not only did I help progress a research project, but I was also able to shadow in clinic 🩺and in the Operating room. I Watched robotic πŸ€–πŸ©»surgeries and in office procedures throughout the summer and even got to sit in on β€œtumor boards” in which the physician team discussed a plan of action for each case. Although, I still don’t know what my future career will look like, I will carry this experience with me throughout my career. It was an amazing summer, program and experience. I learned so much and made friends for life πŸ’•πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ! . . Check out my story/highlights to find out how you can apply! #melaninmed #curlsncures #step1 #ms2 #blackmed2025 #melanindoc #summer

How are you? Three words. Less than two seconds to say. Yet a sentence that can evoke such difficulty in answering; the truth vs. the response. How are you: Do they mean med school? Truth - Well, I’m minimizing the moments when I feel like a well educated idiot to every other day now & a piece of sh*t every three. Sure, I’m constantly being bombarded with ppl & statistics telling me I’ll never get into residency, let alone my desired specialty. But hey, my β€œdiversity seems to matter" to this program, so there’s that right? πŸ™„πŸ˜’I also didn’t cry today so, I guess that’s a win too. Response: "Things are going fine."😊 How are you: Do they mean about my Dad? Truth - Well, he only passed six months ago, so I guess that’s still an acceptable time frame to say "I'm still grieving," right? Or maybe I should say "I’m still processing," that sounds less sad. Will they accept, β€œI’m existing,” b/c frankly that’s all I can do while compartmentalizing & traversing the rockiest medical school journey known to man. What’s their association with death? Do I really want to take on THEIR feelings today? Response: "Things are going fine."😊 How are you: Do they mean in general? Truth - I have a great support system in my friends & family, but do I say I’m still longing for & feeling lonely for β€œmy person.” πŸ‘¨β€β€οΈβ€πŸ‘¨If I say that, will I hear a blanketed platitude of β€œhe’s on his way. He’ll come when you least expect it.” That might be true, but doesn’t make me feel any better. Maybe instead I say, "I’m focusing on me & trying to get healthier.” That sounds better than "I feel fat & dumpy, b/c I’m no longer a size small nor 36S.” Answer: β€œThings are going fine.β€πŸ˜Š As hard as it is to answer, I challenge folks to NOT stop asking. Amend the question however, instead of β€œhow are you,” rather β€œhow are you feeling?” There’s connection in the latter; community & an invitation to join in a conversation. 🀍

Meet one of our geriatric medicine fellows, Naa Koppoe! Dr. Koppoe joins us by way of Columbus, OH where she completed a family medicine residency at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. She is interested in medical directorship and hopes to work in an urban, underserved setting after graduation. She has identified a longitudinal QI project in the longterm care setting and plans to attend the annual Society for PALTC (AMDA) conference this year! Besides medicine, Dr. Koppoe enjoys cooking, reading, and Peloton! We are thrilled Dr. Koppoe chose to train at Michigan Medicine! #geriatrics #ThisIsGeriatrics #NursingHomeCare #MedicalDirectors #AMDA #PALTC #Fellowship #MeetOurFellow #FellowFeature #MedEd #MichiganMedicine #Leadersandbest #OHtoMI #melaninmed

Both MD and DO physicians share a similar scientific approach towards diagnosing and treating patients, which include prescription drugs and surgery. However, DO’s place an additional emphasis on treating the patient as a whole person, not just treating the symptom or injury. In addition to the traditional medical school coursework and licensing exams required for MD and DO medical students. DO students are required to take an additional 200hrs of coursework that include learning about osteopathic philosophy, principles, and practices. Students are taught how to perform structural exams, diagnose somatic dysfunction, and treat patients using direct and indirect OMM techniques. Some health conditions that OMT can improve and treat are asthma, IBS, arthritis, menstrual pain, MSK and joint pain, and sinus problems.
My fellow osteopathic students and I spend 2+ hours a week in OMM Lab and 2+ hours learning osteopathic specific lectures. Each week we learn different OMT treatments that we are frequently tested on through written and practical exams. I can’t wait to learn more advanced OMT this year, and perform treatments on patients during rotations next year. Look out for more of my OMM/OMT content πŸ’• - Student Doctor Sydney . . . . . . #medstudent #doctorsthatDO #medicalstudent #medicine #futureDOctor #blackdoctorsmatter #blackwomeninmedicine #blackgirlmagic #osteopathicmedicine #osteopathy #DOproud #dostudent #studentdoctor #melaninmed #medish #melanindoc #futureMD #medicalschool #medicalstudent #representationmatters #diversityinmedicine #drssimpson #themddosisters

This is 24. Twenty-four straight weeks without a break longer than 3 days in a row, with multiple 24hr calls, patients of all different backgrounds, pathologies, requirements & demands, new learnings, procedures, expectations, and requirements. This is 24... In 24 weeks I have buried a parent. I’ve been pushed physically, mentally & emotionally further than I ever thought possible. I’ve solidified an ignited passion, one that will help me serve my community in the way(s) I’ve always imagined. I’ve met up with, talked to & gathered in fellowship with old friends & cultivated lasting relationships with new ones. I’ve felt connected & grounded, but also distant & aloof. I’ve laughed. I’ve sure as hell cried. I’ve traveled & experienced opportunities & moments that I never could have imagined. I’ve questioned & doubted myself, my intelligence, worth & belonging in a field that says "I’m good enough to practice medicine ON, but not sufficient enough to practice medicine WITH." I’ve felt supported, uplifted & encouraged to see myself as more than just another statistic, and to go for my dreams. I’ve gotten one year older. I’ve longed for what was & will never be. I’ve grown. This is 24... Twenty-four straight weeks & oo how my life has changed. I’ve not yet made sense nor processed it all, who could? I have no profound epiphanies nor sweeping declarations to share, just that this is 24…and what a 24 it has been.

#ParkinsonsDisease ❀️ Posted @withregram β€’ @thegratefulpt ✨Highlighting some of the benefits of boxing! πŸ₯Šβœ¨ 🧠 Did you know? Research shows that vigorous exercise helps increase serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. BDNF plays a crucial role in protecting against neuron degeneration and BDNF levels are usually low with Parkinson’s. This means that exercise is neuroprotective and that having a regular exercise routine which includes vigorous activity can help slow down the progression of the disease. ⏩ Figuratively AND literally, exercise is medicine! πŸ‘₯: @thegratefulpt @jenno_fit . . . . . . . #physicaltherapy #pt #neurorehab #neurophysicaltherapy #neuropt #pd #parkinson #parkinsonsdisease #pdrehab #blackpt #blackphysicaltherapists #melaninmed #melanininmedicine #blackwomeninhealthcare #blackhealthmatters #blackhealthcareproviders #blackinneuro

When I reflect and think back on my first year of medical school all I can do is be grateful. This past year has allowed me to grow into a more resilient, confident, and disciplined person, but the growth came with a cost. I had to sacrifice some relationships, learn how to better exercise boundaries, and let go of the expectation that I was going to be perfect. The greatest lesson I learned from this year (besides the crazy amount of lecture content πŸ˜‚) is that perfectionism is the thief of progress. It wasn’t until I gave myself permission to make mistakes and β€œdo it afraid” that I began to see a change. To all of the incoming M1s my biggest piece of advice is to allow yourself to mess up, get things wrong, try something new, and always be willing to try again. I’m thankful for the grace of God that literally CARRIED me through this year. It would have been impossible for me to get through this year without Jesus. Operating within my own strength almost took me out a few times 🫠 So the daily surrender of what my day was going to entail to God was a necessity in order to keep going. I’m grateful for the people He sent my way to build community and make the process a little bit easier and a lot of fun! Congrats to all of my classmates for finishing our first year! We DID THAT πŸ₯³ Thank you to everyone who took the time to pray for me, send me an encouraging word, and speak life into me during those times when I really needed it. I love y’all ❀️ Tomorrow marks the beginning of my second year, and I’m so excited to see what’s in store! #blackgirlsinhealthcare #BecomingDrHolman #melaninmed #melaninmedicine #blackgirlsinwhitecoats #blackgirlwhitecoat #medicine #medicalschool #medschoollife #medschool #browngirlmedicine #blackgirlmagic #healthcareprofessional #blackmed2024 #blackmed2025 #blackgirlmed

The month of May can be a very challenging for pre-med students. Some students are studying for an upcoming MCAT - and the real real reality is that it may be someones second or third attempt, which is OKAY! Others may be beginning to work on their applications for submission at the end of the month - trying to finalize their personal statements, essays, and reaching out to mentors for letters. And what is not talked about enough is the anxiety that comes with worrying if you will be good enough to get a secondary or an interview invite. . We just want to remind you that there is a white coat with your name on it, and your acceptance season is near. Continue to celebrate your friends and classmates that are excited about their acceptances. Have peace knowing that all your hard work will pay off, regardless of where you are at in this journey! - @drs.simpson #medstudent #futureMD #medicalstudent #futureDO #medicine #DOproud #futuredoctor #blackdoctorsmatter #premedlife #medicinelife #mcatstudying #motivation #blackwomeninmedicine #ilooklikeadoctor #studentdoctor #melaninmed #medish #specialmastersprograms #melanindoc #representationmatters #nhsc #mominmedicine #mcatseason #diversityinmedicine #drssimpson #themddosisters

Many of us have accumulated debt from undergraduate/graduate degrees that we pursued before entering our respective professional programs. . . At the end of my masters program I came across the NHSC Scholarship Program and was instantly drawn to the mission of the program. A huge reason why I wanted to pursue medicine was to practice in underserved communities, and as a NHSC scholar I will be able to commit to that professional goal + graduate medical school DEBT FREE! . . I am truly honored to be a NHSC scholar and I am passionate about the work that is done through this program. I want to continue to spread awareness of this program to other students who have the same career goals as myself. As you can see from my post there are a lot of pro’s and con’s to the program so I recommend that you visit the website and read up on the program for yourself in order to make an informed decision of whether or not this is the right scholarship for you. . . So far the UW School of Dentistry has four new black dental students who have accepted admissions to start year. In the US, the population of black people is about 13%. In Washington it's about 4.4%. Nationwide black dentists make up about 3.8% of all dentists. And while I don't have data on how many black dentists are in Washington, anecdotally as someone very involved in the statewide dental association and as someone who has worked in offices from Everett to Lacey.... We are few and far between. I've yet to meet a single female dentist who looks like me. Period. That's why I'm SO excited for students like Kejdra R. Williams to matriculate and provide the black population of Washington with the representation they deserve. Here's to the incoming class of 2026 and to the hope that UW will continue to increase their intentionally around diversity in their dental classes.
