They're using Missouri barrels with Revelation toast. The Missouri Oak Barrels are a great all-purpose barrel, for white wines the characteristics are coconut in the nose with a sweet vanilla cream in the palate. For red wines, the fruit is highlighted in the nose and a “juicy” fruit quality in the palate. The Revelation toast is moderate, aimed at generating soft aromas (creamy, vanilla). Huge thanks to Mike Sauer @redwillowvineyard for driving over yesterday and talking to our guests about Red Willow Vineyard, its history and legacy, and everything that goes into growing our delicious grapes. Yesterday’s Red Willow tasting was a huge success and we feel so much richer for all the information and stories he shared. It was such a treat! Amidst talks about the vineyard, Sandor poured us tastes of our 2023 Furmint, barrel tastes of 2023 Tannat, 2022 Merlot, 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (filtered and unfiltered), and a sneak peek of our to-be-released 2021 Red Willow Cabernet Sauvignon. Closing out the tasting, we had the incredible opportunity, courtesy @raguirre89, to taste a 1995 Red Willow Syrah from Columbia Winery, from David Lake’s Signature Series, one of the earliest vintages of Washington Syrah ever made! It absolutely held its own and taught us all, if we ever had any doubts, that Syrah can absolutely age well. Thanks also to everyone who attended yesterday’s tasting.
