tfw you finally have time to sit down and write a book review 🤗 Percival Everett’s James met all my expectations and then some, and it’ll be a contender for one of my favourite books of 2024. With his new novel, Everett approaches Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with both a critical eye and a tender heart. In fact, tenderness is a thread that runs boldly throughout the novel, colouring the project with a level of warmth not always found in literary fiction. The novel retells aspects of Twain’s story from the perspective of Jim (or James, as he prefers), the enslaved man whose quest for freedom dovetails with young Huck Finn’s own runaway attempt. But where the source text couples Huck and Jim’s journeys and applies the same emotional and historical weight to both, Everett’s retelling is enmeshed in a realism that illustrates how Huck and James are running from two very different worlds, one undergirded by a more systemic terror than the other. There are wonderful surprises along the way, and a determined avoidance of easy resolutions to history’s most heinous questions. In James, Percival Everett has taken something old and made it wonderfully new again, infusing this dark and compelling tale with philosophy, tenderness, and rollicking storytelling. It was recommended in the Book Blankets FB group by another reader, and I’m so glad I chose to listen to it. Though the book starts and ends wholesome, it has a whole lot of surprising intrigue in the middle. Setting: Kansas during the Great Depression, although the depression isn’t the main focus of the book. It’s about a small town quilting club that meets once a week. The women—all different ages—are fiercely loyal to each other, keeping their secrets and caring for each other whenever things take a turn for one of the members. And boy, do they ever. I loved it. 📖 ➡️ 🎬 When it comes to adaptations, I usually have a preference for either the book or the film. But damn these are both amazing works of art in their own ways! I enjoyed watching American Fiction just as much as I loved reading the book it's based on: ERASURE by Percival Everett. The story follows a frustrated novelist who decides to write a stereotypical 'Black' book. In an unexpected twist, his work of satire is taken for serious literature and achieves critical acclaim. What I liked: 📖 I loved how the main character, Monk, really leans into the whole thing. He dresses as a stereotype, walks as a stereotype, behaves as a stereotype, all to make a point. And he's taken seriously each time. 🎬In the film, Monk is more of a reluctant player. BUT the comedy was absolutely phenomenal. There were so many layers to every interaction and such smart humor. It really helped play up the ridiculousness of Monk's predicament. 📖 There were elements of the book that hit particularly hard. Tender flashbacks to childhood. The pain of watching a parent age and having to cope with Alzheimer's. Maintaining sibling relationships in adulthood. AND the big family secret that served as a huge statement on how we stereotype and judge people... absolutely brilliant. 🎬While I do wish the family secret played a bigger role in the film, I actually loved the movie's ending! It's less ambiguous than the book's and was brilliantly done. (I won't say what it is, but go watch it! You'll love it, I promise!) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ all around. Would read and watch these again in a heartbeat. Темная лошадка этого года, а как бы хотелось, что бы мы все смотрели именно таких фильмов побольше, чем там всяких «Барби»… Вот вам моя наглядная логика- оценки на Кинопоиске «Американское чтиво» - 13 600, «Барби» - 195 000, вам не кажется что массы отупели уже в край ????🙈🤪 Но пока всё же об «Американском чтиве» - это ироничное, саркастическое, смелое, актуальное, смешное, местами грустное полотно, способное увлечь вас, как зрителя, на без малого два часа и оставить с приятным послевкусием на финальных титрах. «Кино - это запечатленное время», и с Тарковским в этом плане не поспоришь. «Американское чтиво»- это один большой прикол, перформанс, кек и сатира на американское общество и не только, и творческих людей в частности. Сказ о том, что «высокое», сложное и концептуальное современный обыватель уже и не в силах обработать своим серым веществом. Как говорится- любит наш народ 💩, и кино как раз об этом: спрос и бестселлинг на товары как можно низшего качества и посредственного наполнения. Чем проще, тем лучше. Быдло для быдло и быдлом погоняет, зато смело, свежо и наглядно. «American Fiction»- важное и желательное для просмотра кино, если хотите быть не только «в материале», но и держать руку на пульсе обстановки не только в США, но и в мире. Изобилуя хорошим юмором, колоритными и собирательными образами-персонажами, картина понятно и доступно доносит до нас одну простую мысль: мир уже давно сошел с ума, все друг с другом поменялись ролями и местами, но покуда мы созидаем этому миру и делаем что-то новое и своё, то еще не все потеряно. Хайп пройдет, людьми весь китч забудется, а истинное и культурно-значимое произведение войдет в анналы истории. «Американское чтиво» - это кино о непризнанном гении, находящемся в перманентном кринже с обстановки вокруг себя, и этот гений, по сути, - каждый из нас. A Long and Happy Life, by Reynolds Price, introduces us to the young Rosacoke Mustian as she travels to the funeral of a childhood friend on the back of Wesley Beavers’ motorcycle. We are in North Carolina in the 1950s, with both time and place beautifully evoked by Price’s subtle prose. Reading this book felt to me like slipping into an old memory. Each scene anchored by precise details but left free of superfluity. Rendered with precision, yet soft around the edges; the focus on Rosacoke herself. On the turmoil of her thoughts and her careful attempts to contain them. I have seen this book described as a love story - it may even be written in the blurb - but to me it is more of a bildungsroman. The relationship between Rosacoke and Wesley may be the focus of the novel, but it is how Rosacoke reacts to it that holds our attention. Her growing understanding of her situation and her continual reassessment of her own thoughts and feelings towards it. All inevitably tangled with her conception of womanhood and her steadily expanding awareness of the limited options available to her. Her place within the world constrained, but her reactions to it still entirely her own. And it is this that makes her such a compelling and believable character. Price creates an entirely plausible consciousness and sets it loose in a situation that, in other hands, might easily become either mundane or melodramatic. Instead, this novel feels quietly profound. It is often sad, but rarely without hope, which is perhaps as much as we should ever expect from life. 4.5 ⭐️

JCO obviously loves writing. It’s not just her prodigious output but the way she builds characters and settings with such detail and depth. She is a confident, commanding, and somewhat authoritarian narrator. I’m happy with that. This novel explores the aftermath of a rape and the effect it has on one family. It is heartbreaking and confronting and you feel for everyone in the family. Loved this! I regret not having bought it last June. I spied it while wandering around Powells in Portland, OR, because I had read the Poppy War series and Babel. Luang is a gifted writer although in the previous novels, things had fallen apart a bit. But Yellowface is relentlessly satiric and clear. #americanfiction is one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a minute. Doesn’t hurt that it stars @jfreewright who’s one of my favorite actors and has a stacked supporting cast. I was really happy to see @erikaalexanderthegreat in it ( I’ve been a big fan since #livingsingle ) and I’m excited to see what @cordjefferson does next.

Erdrich is such an interesting writer. She doesn't pander to the reader. There might be a scene that disturbs, a harsh line, a crude word, or a tangent that confuses, and I can't imagine any editor steering her from her course. She is hard on her characters - she lets them think the unthinkable, the things none of us would admit to. She asks just how bad a person can be, and still be a good person. She writes with devil-may-care insouciance and no small amount of anger. Her style is fluid. Her storytelling feels natural and unrehearsed. She has a quality that I've noticed also in Mary Wesley's novels - the sense that her words have not been polished over and over. Instead, it seems as if she simply got it right the first time. The premise of this novel bodes heartbreak from Page One. An Ojibwe man accidentally shoots his best friend's five-year-old son, then gives up his own son - LaRose - as a recompense. To be honest, I expected solid misery. Surprisingly, this turned out to be a twisty-turny story with a host of truly great characters, an extremely satisfying plot and - the relief of it - a beautiful ending. I enjoy Erdrich almost against my will, if that makes any sense. She makes me nervous. I have to give up any sense of control and go where she takes me. It's like a rollercoaster, a real one, and I don't like rollercoasters. Inspired by the true story of the first pair of giraffes to live at the San Diego Zoo, this book imagines their trek across the country by truck after barely surviving a hurricane-drenched passage across the Atlantic. The story pulled me in right from the start, the characters were so loveable and memorable, the plot was full of adventure and peril and heartfelt moments. It's beautifully written and the ending was perfect.
