Rating: 6/10 Pretty decent film with a cool concept that intrigues through especially till the end! I went into this thinking it would be action, it’s not, it’s more of a science fiction/mystery than anything else but like I said the concept was intriguing and with a cool unexpected ending. Jake is great as always even if not my fav film of his he was still a great on screen presence and the likability I have for him makes it better. Not too much goes on in this film, it’s just Jake on a train scanning for a suspicious person. [EN] Double bill “All of us fictions” There are two things that are undeniably part of human behavior and shape the way we understand the world. The first is our fixation on finding patterns everywhere, just look at the sky and see how we connect the random distribution of stars into constellations that make sense to us: animals, men, objects. The second is our tendency to tell stories. And cinema, which I've written about in these texts, is a great example of this propensity. All of this is part of our way of seeing and making sense of the world. Chaos and randomness are enemies of survival. We need to “imprint” our thoughts on something to which we can assign a logic, a sequence, otherwise we find it difficult to function. What we can grasp most immediately are the repetitions our brain picks up from the world around us. By putting enough repetitions together (sometimes one is enough) we form a pattern that serves as a guide. And patterns give rise to stories in our heads, sequences of cause and effect that allow us to project the future in some way. Of course, while some patterns are solid (if you let go of something, it will fall to the ground), others are hastily superimposed on reality in the desperation to appease ourselves. This gives rise to superstitions, religion, conspiracy theories, bias, etc. Stories are not just for understanding the universe we inhabit. They are particularly useful for understanding ourselves and our place in this universe, and in relation to others. Just as primitive men invented gods to cope with the fear of storms and natural disasters that afflicted them, each of us has to invent something to help us cope with the turmoil of desires, traumas, ambitions and intrusive thoughts that beset us. Tudo isto faz parte da nossa forma de ver e fazer sentido do mundo. O caos, a aleatoriedade, são inimigos da sobrevivência. Precisamos de “encarrilar” o pensamento em algo a que consigamos atribuir uma lógica, uma sequência, senão temos dificuldade em funcionar. Aquilo a que nos conseguimos agarrar mais imediatamente são as repetições que o nosso cérebro capta do mundo à nossa volta. Juntando repetições suficientes (por vezes uma basta) formamos um padrão que nos serve de guia. E padrões dão origem a histórias na nossa cabeça, sequências de causa e efeito que nos permitem projectar o futuro, de alguma forma. Claro que, se há padrões que são sólidos (se largar algo, vai cair em direção ao chão), outros são apressadamente sobrepostos na realidade no desespero de nos podermos apaziguar. Surgem assim as superstições, a religião, teorias da conspiração, enviesamentos, etc. As histórias não servem só para entender o universo que habitamos. Servem particularmente para nos entendermos a nós mesmos e o nosso lugar neste universo, e em relação com os outros. Como os homens primitivos inventaram os deuses para fazer frente ao medo das tempestades, dos desastres naturais que os afligiam, cada um de nós tem que inventar alguma coisa para nos ajudar a enfrentar o tumulto de desejos, traumas, ambições, e pensamentos intrusivos que nos assolam. À medida que vivemos, vamos compondo a nossa história (ou histórias), e ao mesmo tempo que a contamos aos outros contamo-la também a nós próprios, repetidamente. Watched American Fiction yesterday, and decided to do a portrait of Monk. This was an interesting look at racial stereotypes in America, with great dialogue and performances. Hold the Dark is a #2018 film that’s streaming on #Netflix and is from #JeremySaulnier, who did Blue Ruin and Green Room. Both those movies are intense and captivating. Hold the Dark is definitely intense, but it holds little else that I can praise. It’s about a woman named Medora ( #RileyKeough) whose child is taken by wolves at an isolated town in Alaska. She contacts Russell ( #JeffreyWright), who is an expert on wolves, to track down the pack that took him. Things are not quite as they seem and Russell really should’ve done a little more due diligence before embarking on this quest. Medora’s husband, Vernon ( #AlexanderSkarsgard) is deployed overseas, but returns after being wounded. This movie has a rather nonsensical narrative that seems to focus on Big Ideas, but winds up just being a jumbled mess. It alludes to the animalistic nature within humanity that is more present in the outskirts of society. There’s also some assumed incest and lots of masks getting worn. Oh yeah, and visceral violence in several scenes. The problem is that there’s no real character development, so I felt distant from their plight. Those scenes seemed to just want to shock, but not to move the plot forward, grow the characters, or entertain. Not that action has to be entertaining, in some ways the bombast of normal movie carnage is tamped down by something as unforgiving as this movie, but there’s not enough here to really make that point. It felt senseless and unfocused, a big miss from a director who has impressed in his other films. ⭐️⭐️
