Last week, I attended the acclaimed @jnwine Portfolio Tasting at the wonderful surroundings of the Rita Duffy Suite within the Merchant Hotel. This was another opportunity to meet the winemakers in person, offering a various selection of high-quality wines and, in turn, to help gain a better insight of the producers, export directors & winery staff representatives! If, like me, you are a fellow wine enthusiast, I would throughly recommend this to become an annual tradition ✏️ 📖👏👏👏 I feel that this has helped me immensely to expand my taste palate 👅 and give a deeper appreciation of wines outside my comfort zone, I wouldn't normally have nor try! In particular, over the past few years, since I have begun my wine journey with @wsetglobal, I am trying to gain more confidence in selecting and purchasing wines. My top 4️⃣ picks of the wines of the evening included: ✔️ The lovely Glenda & Frank Kalyk's Organic "Tattarrattat" (Vintage 2023) from @chateaupicoron in Bordeaux, France 🇫🇷 All natural and no added sulphites, great for a fresher morning after the night before! 🍇 Made with 100% Merlot grapes. I could really taste the difference when served chilled 🥶 Giving a flavour of red plums, cherries, apples & a natural fizz. With aromas of fresh red fruits, sour cherries also and crunchy red apples. It was just devine!😋 ✔️ Managing Partner & Technical Director Marc Kent's @Boekenhoutskloof "The Chocolate Block" (Vintage 2022) from Franschoek in South Africa 🇿🇦 Made in limited qualities (So be quick before they go 🏃♂️🏃♀️) The name of this wine says it all & is one of the most treasured wines in all of South Africa 🫶 Giving it's spicy notes, especially those of chocolate and toast from it's time in wood and blended perfectly with such ripe fruit flavours. With the make-up of this wine it's tweaked from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the ancient vines of the land.

And while we’re big fans of the good everyday bottles – what we think of as Wednesday night, sausage-and-mash gluggers – we thought it was time for another tasting to show what happens when the producers pull all the stops out. Because this is a place with a magnificent heritage, a magnificent terroir – or to be more accurate several magnificent terroirs – and a magnificent array of grape varieties. So join us as we explore the higher reaches of Rioja, and look at the many expressions of its wines. There’ll be traditional wines, there’ll be modern ones. There’ll be wines made from a variety of grapes, there’ll be ones made from just one. There’ll be young wines, there’ll be older wines. There'll be blends from across the region, but there'll also be examples of the recently-introduced 'Viñedo Singular' - single vineyard wines. And in among the delicious reds, there’ll be at least one of the undersung white wines. We’ll be trying at least eight wines with an average price of over £25 – and there’ll be some Manchego to nibble on the side. Thanks to LeRiche Wines for inviting me to the pre release tasting of their 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Etienne Le Riche is a legend in the South African winemaking community. He spent 20 years at Rustenberg Estates, becoming one of the finest producers of this cultivar in the country, and was instrumental in establishing Stellenbosch as one of the world's great regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Le Riche left Rustenberg in 1996 to pursue his dream of making wines under his own name, and so the eponymous brand was begun. From the very beginning, his wines have garnered critical acclaim, and in a very short period of time, Le Riche Wines has become regarded as one of South Africa's finest Cabernet Sauvignon producers. Following in his father's footsteps, Christo LeRiche is now head winemaker, and it was a fascinating experience to taste through a number of their wines with him yesterday. Christo explained that they have longstanding contracts (most simply sealed with a handshake) with 14 growers in the Stellenbosch area, where a variety of different aspects, altitudes and soils (including a vineyard of bush vines - unusual for Cabernet Sauvignon) provide the grapes for their flagship blend. All vineyard plots are vinified separately and matured for 12 months in barrel (75% new) prior to blending before being returned to barrel for another year. For a review of the stunning 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, I would suggest reading the one by Master of Wine Greg Sherwood published on his blog - it's pure poetry. Unsurprisingly it was the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve which really captivated me - deep garnet in the glass with a brooding nose offering up aromas of dried figs, prunes, Medjool dates, clove, cedar, cigar box and dusty farm road, the still lively acidity and persistent but now silky tannins providing structure amply supported by the now dried fruit and spices with flavours of prunes, dates, chocolate and cocoa, a creaminess on the palate and a lingering finish. La semaine passée, six intrépides #AmateursDeVin ont pris part à la première phase de notre session inaugurale #WSET3Vin. Pour cela, ils ont dû s'adonner à de longues semaines de labeur en leur demeure. Une sélection de 30 vins leur fut offerte. Parmi eux, se trouvaient des #rieslings français et allemands que j'avais soigneusement choisis lors de mes pérégrinations l'an passé. Issus de terroirs et de méthodes de production variés, ces vins influent grandement sur leur style et leur qualité. Au cours de cette session, ils durent déguster les vins à l'aveugle et identifier : 🪨Les terroirs 🍷Les méthodes de vinification 🍇Les cépages À l'issue de ces trois premiers jours, un premier examen leur fut soumis pour qu'ils s'exercent à répondre à des questions ouvertes (la partie réputée la plus ardue). Nearly extinct by the 1960s, this indigenous Alpine Grape is having a resurgence thanks to increasing recognition of its unique character and food-friendliness. Still endangered, the five or six remaining plots known in the 60s have grown to about 360 acres of Humagne Rouge vineyards worldwide, and it has reclaimed its place as a traditional variety of Valais, Switzerland. Grape Description and Flavor Profile: Typical markers for the grape include aromas of dark cherries and a degree of spiciness in the finish. In its more rustic expressions, it can be full-bodied, tannic and earthy, while more elegant examples show fruit-driven, medium-bodied structure with tamed, silky tannins. Aging Potential: Though it can be enjoyed young, due to its acidity and tannins fine examples develop over ten years or more. Where It’s From: Genetic testing has proven it to be identical to the Cornalin d'Aoste variety of Valle D’Aosta, its disputed birthplace. While the debate continues, there is at least consensus that it arose in either Valais or Valle D’Aosta, neighboring valleys on the Swiss-Italian border. As a note, it is not genetically related to its white-wine neighbor, Humagne Blanche. Where It Grows: Today it is found almost exclusively in the Valais valley of Switzerland, home to 320 acres of the estimated 360 acres of the grape in the world. Food Pairings: Despite the tannins, the medium body and refreshing character of the wine complements wild poultry, hard cheeses, charcuterie and veal, while more tannic, fuller-bodied examples are an excellent accompaniment to roast meats. Il Giro d’Italia dei Vini 🚴♀️ Stage 6 - Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio) to Rapolano Terme - 180km Our route today heads south and east down through the Chianti heartlands, then skirts south of Siena to finish at the spa town of Rapolano. The riders will need the thermal baths as the second half of the stage is hilly and takes in 3 section of ‘strade bianchi’ over white gravel roads which will envelop the peloton in a cloud of dust (or mud if it rains). The race may not be won today but it could well be lost if the main overall contenders are not vigilant and avoid crashes and punctures. 🍷 Fortunately we have the opportunity to watch them with another very nice glass of wine from the Sangiovese grape which, in this more southerly part of Tuscany they call Brunello. My choices today are this pair, another of Italy’s great wines - Brunello di Montalcino - both from good recent vintages. The Mastro Janni I bought in Italy and the Castello Banfi I received as a present. But they are both widely available in the UK from £40-£60. Celebrating 🥂 World Moscato Day! 🍇 🗣️ (“moe-ska-toe”) 👅 Flavours : Lemon 🍋 Mandarin orange 🍊 Pear 🍐 Honeysuckle Orange blossom ✴️Moscato Wine Styles : 1. Sparkling and Semi-Sparkling Moscato 🍾 The Italian wines of Moscato d’Asti (semi-sparkling) and Asti Spumante (sparkling) are the classic examples. 2. Still Moscato 🍇 Still (as in not sparkling) versions of Moscato are made with Muscat Blanc grapes. 3. Pink Moscato 🍓 This wine is made with mostly Muscat grapes and usually dollup of Merlot to give it a ruby-pink color. Imagine the classic Moscato flavors with a touch of strawberry. If you love pink Moscato, you should definitely try @barefootwine 🩷 Moscato. 4. Red Moscato (aka Black Muscat) 🍷🥀 It’s rare, but there’s a grape variety called Black Muscat. Imagine raspberry, rose petals and violets, with subtle roasted notes of assam black tea. The grape is a cross made from a rare Italian red grape called Schiava (wowsa) and Muscat of Alexandria. The United States has several good producers of Black Muscat worth checking out. 5. 振り返ってみると、家であけているワインの9割以上が白ワイン。勝手に、自分のことを「シロセン」と呼んでいます。家の食事には、白ワイン、特に、日本ワインが合うんです。 その中でも、ウッディファームの白はどれを飲んでも本当においしい。今回は、プティマンサン。日本の気候でもプティマンサンは酸を保ちながら、糖度が上がり、酒質の強いワインができあがります。プティマンサンだけだと、酒質が強すぎるので、シャルドネ25%とアルバリーニョをわずかにブレンドしています。 ウッディファーム&ワイナリー フィルマンサン 2021 Woody Farm & Winery Phil-Manseng 2021 ウッディファームで栽培する品種の中でプティマンサンは群を抜いています。糖酸度の高さに加え、低ｐｈの成分値だけを見れば【日本じゃないみたい】な品質のブドウが今のところ毎年収穫できます。真正面から辛口ワインを醸造すれば、アルコールは15％に迫り、酸度は9g/Lを越え、ｐｈ3.0付近の、超が付く程強いワインが生み出される事は過去のトライアルで経験しています。食事との相性や身体への負担を考えれば、もう少し酒質を緩くしたいところ。ハードな原酒を解すキーになるのはシャルドネでした。強すぎる個性が緩和され、ますます親しみやすく好きになるでしょう。それはプティマンサン愛好家の為のブレンドワイン、名前をPhil‐Mansengと言います。 香りに白桃の核果系をベースにパイナップルやマンゴーのトロピカルフレーバー、バニラやカルダモンのスパイスが溶け込んでいます。硬質な酸味のお陰かアルコールのボリュームはそれほど強く感じず、食事を引き立てる事も主役になる事も出来るワインです。 11月初旬に収穫されたプティマンサンを全房で搾汁しました。得られた果汁はBrix22.5、ｐｈ3.1、酸度10.1g/L。何という数値でしょう。デブルバージュは行わず、濁度は高めで開放タンクで発酵を促しました。発酵完了後に野生酵母で仕込んでいたシャルドネをブレンドし、樽入れ前にアルバリーニョで香りを足しました。バトナージュは不定期に行いMLFへ誘導しています。樽出し後に最も遅摘みし新樽発酵させたプティマンサンを3％ブレンドしました。全てのブレンドが完了し落ち着いてから瓶詰めしましたが、ここでアクシデントが…。なんと瓶の中に巨大な酒石酸の澱が析出してきました。酒石酸はアクアリウムの様にひらひらと直ぐに瓶底へ沈殿します。気になる方はデキャンタをお勧めします。 瓶詰め直後は酸度に金属的な冷たさがあり、これはミネラルと表現しても罰は当たらないでしょう、という味わいでしたが一年経つと果実の風味が戻り、析出した分だけ酸も解れたように感じます。それでも通常のワインよりは強靭ですので、プティマンサンを愛する人向けに変わりはありません。 品種構成 プティマンサン72％・シャルドネ23％・アルバリーニョ5％ 収穫日 2021年9/29、30、11/6、8 畑 原口畑、生居畑、植ノ山畑 アルコール度数 13.2％vol. 総酸度 7.2g/L pH 3.20 樽比率 100％（新樽3％） 生産本数 1186本 #ワイン #ワイン好き #ワインエキスパート #ソムリエ #ワインエキスパート試験 #ソムリエ試験 #sakediploma #国際唎酒師 #WSET #WSETdiploma #WSET4 #diplomacandidate #もんワインおすすめ

Another nice wine in Sicily: Montalto Etna Bianco 2021 from @tenutaterrenere The Carricante grape takes the lead in Etna Bianco DOC. While regulations call for a minimum of 60%, top producers opt for 100%. Carricante, known for its high acidity, thrives at altitudes over 1000m around Mount Etna, where red grapes struggle to ripen fully. The resulting wines boast intense lemon and green apple notes, buoyed by very high acidity. Often, malolactic fermentation is employed to soften the acidity, resulting in a rounded mouthfeel. This wine, categorized in premier cru in the Tenuta della Terre Nere in its definition (not in the regulation). Sourced from vines planted on the southern slope at elevations of 900 to 950m, with vine ages ranging from 60 to 90 years, it exhibits warm aromas of stone fruits and spice, alongside the characteristic lemon and green apple notes. On the palate, it achieves harmony, balancing creaminess with its signature acidity. Distinct minerality, hints of yogurt and butter, add complexity, while a salty finish enhances its appeal. The wine’s remarkable fruit concentration evokes comparisons to exceptional Aligoté or Chablis. We savored it paired with fish dishes at @osteriaanticamarina in the fish market. How to comment on winemaking from the glass🥂 Evidences from the glass can help conveying an accurate winemaking process. After my MW studies I can now provide advices to my students in order to be logic and follow a chronological order. Here is a note I wrote some years ago about a Non Vintage Champagne. The combination of rhubarb and firm texture, the expansive mouthfeel and citrus note, with floral complexity point to classic Champagne blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier (when possible add the percentages and quality of the grape/vineyards). High definition of palate and lack of phenolic grip from whole bunch direct pressing, first press in likely fractional press. Detailed fruit character from first fermentation in inert vessels at. 20-22°C to highlight textural enhancement. Additional mid-palate weight from lees ageing before second fermentation. Broad palate with tertiary complexity likely from addition of reserve wines up to 30%. Firm structure, persistent mousse from second fermentation in bottle. Pronounced brioche aromas, creamy mouthfeel and fine bubbles from autolytic ageing up to three years enhancing palate density and complexity. 8-10gr/l sugar from dosage at brut level.
