This plaster cast sculpture depicts Aphrodite, who was a goddess from Greek mythology. You'll find it in the Entrance Hall of the State Apartments at Dublin Castle. It is probable that this plaster cast sculpture of the standing draped Aphrodite is the Aphrodite Frejus or Venus Genetrix. It is probably a plaster mould of a late 5th BCE Greek original in bronze attributed to the sculptor Callimachus. Aphrodite holds the prized golden apple in her left hand. She wears a simple floor length dress known as a ‘chiton’ fastened to one shoulder in the ‘exomis’ fashion. With her right hand she wraps herself in her outer cloak, known as a ‘himation’. The goddess places her weight on her left leg, while her right leg is bent back at the knee. She tilts her head slightly to her left and down, and casts her glance out towards the viewer. According to Greek mythology, the great god Zeus held a banquet. Eris, the goddess of discord, was angry that she was not invited. In attempt to create some ‘discord’ she turned up at the banquet with a golden apple inscribed ‘for the fairest one’. Three of the goddesses attending, specifically Hera, Athena and Aphrodite immediately tried to claim the prize, each believing they were the most beautiful goddess of them all. They first turned to Zeus to adjudicate the contest, who declined and appointed Paris, the Trojan mortal prince to judge. In the end Paris offered Aphrodite the golden apple and title of ‘the fairest one’ since she was able to offer him the most beautiful human woman in the world (i.e. Helen of Sparta, the wife of King Menelaus). According to the philosopher Homer, this instigated the Trojan Wars with the Achaeans (Greeks) trying to get Helen back from the City of Troy. Aphrodite was the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, the sea, and seafaring. Visitors to the House are now greeted in the Entrance Hall by a very illustrious lady indeed. This arresting grande dame who occupies the principal niche of the hall, is non-other than the Venus Genetrix. Our version is a plaster cast from the Frejus Aphrodite of the Louvre made in the atelier of the Musée Art & Histoire in Brussels. It is the closest we can get to the version the first Earl of Milltown purchased in Italy on his grand tour. Guaranteed to give his guests the wow factor, his slightly different version was also a 2nd Century A.D. Roman statue of flawless Parian marble. Venus holds the edge of her garment with her graceful right arm extended, in her left hand is the golden apple, a prize from Paris for winning the title of "Most Beautiful Goddess". The sculptor reveals the power and the beauty of the female form in a sensual mannerist style. Her companions in the other niches in Milltown's day were most likely Mercury, a Venus de Medici, Diana the Huntress and a young Bacchus. Good morning from the Forum of Caesar! The square was started by Caesar in 54 BCE and finished off by Augustus in 29 BCE. Most of the remains on display are from later periods. The temple was vowed by Caesar the night before the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BCE, during his war with Pompey. It was devoted to Venus Genetrix, or the "universal mother." Caesar's family claimed to be descended from the goddess. The columns you see date from a rebuilding program during Trajan's reign. The rebuilt temple was dedicated on the same day as Trajan's column was in 113 CE. Further work was done to the Forum after the fire of 283 CE. Jumping back into my Roman Gods series with Rome's divine mother, Venus!❣🕊🐚 . She was mother to Aeneas, the mythic founder of the Roman people, and ancestor to the city's founder Romulus (& Remus kinda). She shares many similarities to her Greek counterpart, Aphrodite, as the goddess of love and lust, and having been born out of the sea. . In her hair is a myrtle crown (her sacred plant), and her brooch is of two shells. The dove is more closely linked to Aphrodite, but I thought it looked pretty and would be a fun shout to her Eastern version. Also, while she is usually depicted with a pink palette nowadays, that is quite a modern idea. Qui suo figlio Ascanio, noto anche come Iulo (da cui il nome della gens Iulia), fondò la città di Alba Longa e diede origine alla stirpe dei re albani fino ad arrivare ai gemelli fondatori di Roma. The Forum of Caesar is named after Julius Caesar who sponsored its construction as early as 54 BCE when he had Oppius and Cicero buy the land. One of the dominant features of the forum was a temple vowed by Caesar on the night before the Battle of Pharsalus in 48. Caesar's temple was dedicated to Venus Genetrix, the "universal mother" from whom Caesar and thus all emperors from Augustus to Nero claimed descent. The construction work wasn't finished when Caesar was murdered. It was completed by Octavian, Caesar's heir, who we know better as Augustus. A complete restoration occured during the reign of Trajan with a new inauguration taking place in 113 CE (the same day as Trajan's Column). Another restoration was completed during the reign of Diocletian. The Temple would have had statues of Caesar and Cleopatra inside and various other long lost works of art added over the centuries that the forum was in use. Inscriptions dating to the reign of Arcadius have been found, which suggests that it was a vital area into the 5th century. By the 9th century the forum had lost its travertine paving and its original function, it had become a large garden where herbs and vegetables were grown. ref. Il grande condottiero romano promise alla dea di edificare un tempio in suo onore in cambio della vittoria a Farsalo contro il suo oppositore Pompeo. 🕊️ Le truppe di Cesare risultarono vittoriose e perciò venne innalzato il tempio per Venere Genitrice, all'interno del Foro di Cesare. 🕊️ Si narra che Enea, principe troiano, fosse figlio della dea Venere, che più volte nel corso della grande battaglia sotto le mura di Troia giunse in suo aiuto, quando l'eroe rischiava di essere ucciso dalla furia dei greci. 🕊️ Enea infine si lasciò alle spalle la città in fiamme per fuggire in Italia assieme al vecchio padre Anchise e al figlioletto Ascanio (chiamato anche Iulo). 🕊️ Fu proprio Iulo a fondare Alba Longa, divenendone il sovrano e dando il via a una dinastia che culminerà con i gemelli Romolo e Remo. 🕊️ Da Iulo ebbe origine la gens Iulia, di cui Giulio Cesare era un fiero esponente, per questo poteva vantare origini divine. 🕊️ Svetonio ricorda come, in piena età repubblicana, Cesare radunasse il Senato all'interno del tempio di Venere, sedendo sul podio come se lui stesso fosse una divinità. 🕊️ Il suo atteggiamento non piaceva ai sostenitori della repubblica, e per questo ai suoi danni prese forma una congiura.
