What are Macros? 🍏 ‘Macros’ are essentially just short for ‘Macronutrient’ which means BIG nutrient. They’re big in that we need them in larger quantities in our diet than all other vitamins and minerals. The 3 Macros are: Protein Carbohydrates Fats ‘Protein’ is typically the first thing that we want to make sure is included in our meals (Protein actually derives from a Greek word which means ‘primary’). We literally can’t live without it in our diet. It’s 4 calories per gram and is the predominant component of many of our bodies tissues, as well as being vital for hormonal function and most of the bodies metabolic processes. It’s also typically the most filling of all of the macronutrients, which is higher protein diets typically lead to many people feeling fuller after consuming larger amounts. ‘Carbohydrates’ are simply chains of sugars. Also 4 calories per gram, they are of equal calorific value to Protein per unit of size. Depending on the length of the chain they are often referred to as either ‘complex’ or ‘simple’, but all types eventually get broken down into its smallest form in the body to be used for energy. We can live without them in our diet, but as minimally processed types often bring a whole host of other nutrients like Fibre, it’s pretty important we still try to include them in amounts appropriate for your size and activity levels. Finally, we have ‘Fats’. These come in 3 different types based upon their chemical makeup. Saturated, Poly-Unsaturated and Mono-Unsaturated. A gram of Fat is 9 calories and therefore the most calorie dense per unit of size. Although we know fitness is extremely beneficial for our mental health, when on a fitness journey we can sometimes fall into the trap of being self-critical and overly mean to ourselves! I think once you make self-improvement a priority, e.g., through starting a fitness journey, you can get a little carried away and feel as though you’re never achieving enough or never getting to where you want to be. When this happens, something that should add to our lives and uplift us, can become the thing that lowers our self-esteem and increase anxiety. If you find yourself in a trap like this and want things to change, the easiest place to start is to change the way you speak to yourself and reframe the negative thoughts. Think of your brain like a muscle you would train at the gym, the more negative thoughts you have, the stronger the associated pathways and connections become in your brain- so by reframing negative thoughts into more positive ones, over time these connections and pathways will become stronger. So here are some thoughts I’ve struggled with in the past, and how I might re frame them to change my mindset and the way I speak to myself. NOT ALL PROTEIN IS EQUAL‼️ A lot of people just look at protein on nutrition labels to get their daily protein targets. However, not all protein is the same quality to the body, known as Bio-Availability. Most companies will use soy because it is cheaper. But you can see it is also less utilized by the body. Whey and Eggs are the most utilized proteins. On nutrition labels, when they use a protein blend mix, they list the most used protein first, then in succession. You will notice most cereal and protein bars, soy isolate is the main ingredient. Remove these foods and replace them with Whey. Do something else; find something else to do, like go out with your friends, hang out with your family, go on a date, read....and as much as I don't want to say it....find others hobbies. ❤️Don’t underestimate the killer workout you can get with just dumbbells at home even if you are short on time. Circuit 1 -Split squat drop set 8 reps with dumbbells/8 reps body weight -Sumo squat x12 Do the split squats on each leg before doing the sumo squats. Perform 4 rounds. Your reminder that you shouldn’t always worry about what others might think of you and that you no longer have to fear looking „bulky.“ I went a long time without training my upper body because I was afraid of getting too broad. Of course, it’s possible to overdo it, but if you train your upper body 1-2 times a week and do the right exercises, there’s not much to worry about. You’ll achieve a nicely defined back, and the best part is that your waist will appear visually smaller. Don’t be afraid to work on your legs either! Just like with upper body training, it’s possible to overemphasize one area, like legs, without working on your glutes, but there are great exercises that focus more on the glutes. Your legs will still get worked out then, but they won’t get too big. My plan is coming out SOON, and it’s a great companion.
