A "living fossil", that's what this tree is considered to be and, in fact until 1994 these trees were only thought to exist purely in fossil records. That was until they were lucky rediscovered hidden away in Wollemi national park in Australia where only 100 Wollemi pine trees remained in their natural habitat. Climbing hydrangea. A revelation! I planted this a few years ago to cover a north-facing fence and to soften the edges of my newly erected shed. It has turned out to be a bit of a Bobby Dazzler! If it didn’t already get full marks for covering unwanted surfaces, the internet also tells me that the young leaves of climbing hydrangea are edible when cooked. They taste like cucumber, sometimes being added to Miso in Japan. For my latest project I have been designing a show garden, to the specifications of the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. The concept of the garden is centered around rain, and how our gardens can be adapted for the heavier rainfall we are experiencing in the UK due to climate change. Slowing down or even stopping the flow of rainwater into surface water drains reduces the likelihood of flooding and of our sewage systems overflowing, and the design includes several features to achieve this. The design also aims to show that gardens can still be enjoyed even on a rainy day- and in fact can be even more fun and beautiful. ➡️ Scroll to see the process of installing a fence post onto concrete, read below for more details 👇 What I am working with 👷🏼♀️ A concrete yard which slopes in both directions, which means making things level is... a big challenge 🫣 My idea 💡 To use an engineering technique found most commonly in industrial applications such as installing lamposts, signage etc into concrete. The idea is that you drive throughbolts into the concrete, and then use washers/bolts to then be able to individually adjust the corners of how the fence post holder sits; this then alleviates the issue of having (very) unlevel concrete. ⚠️ The solution doesn't look pretty, but the base will be completely hidden when I finish the fence - at the bottom of each post there will be cladding around the base which will hide all the metal work from view - no one will be able to tell that it's been installed by a vaguely literate ape. ⛈️ Inclement weather has meant progress this past bank holiday weekend has been disappointingly slow - only the one fence post installed. HOWEVER, the bad weather actually gave me more time to think about my options with what exact fence style I am going to go for, as I still need to figure out where to source the wood from. 📖 I'm only doing a small section of fence, and if I manage not to cock it up, that's when I'll go and order the materials to do the rest. This is a massive learning curve that is well beyond anything I've done before in terms of DIY projects, and I'm doing it alone!
