It’s a quiet sort of year in my garden. That matches my mood well. Lush and green under the damson tree, honesty flowering in the greenhouse because I hung last year’s seed pods up in there to dry and the seeds dropped everywhere. The first roses are here and birds have made a nest at the top of my Gertrude Jekyll tower. As the winter ran on very late this year my azaleas are still having their first bloom of the season. They are very versatile plants and can be used as shrubbery or shaped using wires to create more tree like forms. They’re also quite tough and tolerate harsher conditions. Do watch out for Azalea Gall however, it’s a fungal disease caused by Exobasidium japonicum, which radically deforms the leaves by creating tumour like spurts. This eventually leads to leaf loss. It’s also really hard to treat! It often effects azaleas that have been grown indoors where there has been poor air circulation. I like to arrange them in blocks to create walls of colour. I also prune them quite hard in late winter to keep them low and compact. #azalea #azaleakimono #londongarden #balconygarden #azaleagall

BETH CHATTO’S DRY GARDEN I finally got to visit the plant Mecca that is Beth Chatto’s dry garden as part of an R&D field trip today. Truly a cornucopia of plants, plants are famously planted right into gravel and only given a few centimetres of organic matter at time of planting, and are only watered then too. It’s very much do or die. There was a lot to learn in this garden, and while it was affirming to see lots of the drought tolerant plants I already use in my work, I have befriended many more. First lettuce harvest of the year from 4 days ago 💚 Picked another bunch just as big today. The rice fish eggs are doing well so far. You can see the little eyes within the eggs now so we’re moving in the right direction with daily water changes and constantly searching out a warm sunny spot for the bowl to sit in. It’s not a simple feat, especially when you discover that all the supporting beams of the roof (and terrace) are rotten due to leaks from the roof! 😳 Our structural engineer designed the new terrace supporting structure and, after rectifying previously shoddy workmanship, our wonderful builder, built this beauty (works in progress still). 👌👌👌🤩 The joists are supported by steel girders on the perimeter walls, allowing for a ➡️‘floating terrace’ upon which the joists are laid. To see it was a sight of beauty!! 🥳🤩 It’s not just plants that take our breath away!! We arrived, men in full swing and couldn’t enthuse enough about the work.🙌🏾🫶👌🙏🙏 Without our trusted colleagues, we simply could not operate. The excitement is building for the @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show, which starts next Tuesday! These amazing irises, in the garden by @sarahpricelandscapes, stole the show last year, and we're excited to see all the 2024 displays. The greenest Chelsea yet, garden builds and relocations are taking an increased sustainable approach this year, with a firm focus on green goals. Following up on last week’s post about outdoor dining - this week I thought I’d share some ideas to about a more relaxed seating area. I always think about this type of spot as perfect for either a leisurely morning coffee or a sundowner. If you’ve got space for both, consider where the sun will be at both times… Broadly the same rules apply as to dining spaces: you want an enclosed, cosy feeling, but with vistas around the wider garden. Low level seating will create a relaxed vibe, and don’t forget a table if space allows. Thank goodness for warmer days and lighter evenings 🙌🏼 . Our new green patio doors are coming into their own - people talk about bringing the outside in but we’re bringing the inside out, moving armchairs and side tables out onto the patio for extra comfy lounging in the sun 😎. . We’re hoping to start working on the patio in a few weeks’ time - to re-pave it and widen it by 1.5m or so at this end, to accommodate a table and chairs. I’d like terracotta coloured pavers - bricks or tiles, I’m not sure. Any recommendations?
