OH WHAT A NIGHT!!! I don’t even know where to start. I’m so overwhelmed by the turn out for tonight’s class. My ice breaker tonight was, “how do know Bianca?” Because the room was filled with so many people from various parts of my life. High school friends, gym friends, Cloverdale friends, Montclair friends, Krew members, family, teaching friends. All of my worlds combined in one room to dance, feel good, and celebrate US, the Killa-B-Fitness community! I am forever grateful for any bit of attention you give my stuff on social media, for reading my emails, for coming to class, for bringing a friend, for helping build this community. Coincidentally, I ran into an old student today at Costco, and he said that I will always be his favorite teacher because he’ll always remember how I made him feel in class, “comfortable and confident.” I swear I almost started crying because that is literally the best compliment and 1000% what I strive for with anyone I care about. This weekend I took a workshop taught by @_christinaweaver_ and hosted by @warriorartcamp . What a great experience! I’m hoping Christina’s appreciation for nature’s puzzle pieces of shapes, colors, and values has rubbed off on me. The workshop spanned three days: two days in the lovely Arlington Garden in Pasadena and one day at Caltech, focusing on intensive outdoor painting. Observing the infinitude of life in a flower bed, and translating that into paint, pretty much fried my brain. On two of the days, I took my paintings home and “finished” them using a photo reference I took earlier. Although Christina encouraged us to paint exclusively from life, I found I couldn’t help myself. One day, I hated my painting and wanted to paint over it. Another day, I thought it would be much better if I just worked on it more. In any case, two of the four paintings were entirely plein air (the purple flowers and the geranium). The geranium painting was an exercise in which we had to paint for one hour using only five piles of mixed color. I faced the added challenge of mixing my paint with a stick because I forgot my palette knife that morning. Interestingly, this one-hour stick-mixed painting received really positive reviews from a few fellow attendees. I don’t know what to make of that! If I had more time on my hands, I might have ruined it for them.
