Another nice magnum that was pulled during our Paulée in last September. Damn, there is still so much to post about this event! But step by step we will get there. I’m not always a big fan of Ramonet (prominent oak), but this one was showing well on a cooler vintage. It actually shows nice fruit, everything seems quite well integrated here. The oak is here but quite polished and melted. Slightly spicy with toast. The palate shows freshness and good tension. Textbook 2017 that is still showing, but could deep dive in the classic dormant phase soon? Good concentration and touch of fat, and remains agile and salivating. More white peaches and a touch of lemon. Great magnum and good aging potential! With layers of tropical fruit, citrus zest, and a subtle hint of vanilla, it evolved beautifully in the glass, revealing deeper notes of toasted nuts and a slight salinity. The 2011, while equally impressive, presented a more focused profile. The aromas were more floral, with notes of jasmine and white peach. 2001 Leroy Romanée-St-Vivant: Wine of the night for me - a true masterpiece, this RSV was a sensory journey with its bouquet of dark cherries, rose petals, and a touch of exotic spices. The palate was silky and seductive, with layers of red fruit, earth, and a long, haunting finish. 2002 Leroy Clos de la Roche - a powerhouse of flavor and structure. Bold and intense, it offered a complex array of blackberries, plums, and licorice, with a solid tannic structure. 1996 Leroy Musigny was an ethereal experience, with a nose of wild berries, violets, and a touch of truffle. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced, with fine tannins, great acidity in this high-acid vintage, as well as a long, elegant finish that lingered with notes of spice and forest floor. Mount Langi Ghiran, Langi Shiraz This is a great example of an excellent cool climate Australian Shiraz. Langi is the flagship wine of the Mount Langi Ghiran estate. As described earlier, their entry wines are already very lovely, so this had to live up to expectations. And it did. It is at least 5x more expensive, and definitely 5x better. However, it was still closed up and too young. Even after decanting it for 12 hours. Nonetheless we could easily taste the complexity and the potential of this beautiful Australian red power machine. On the nose we get black cherries, blackberries, mullberries, liquorice and roses. On the palate it is a sublime blend of tightly woven dark fruits, supported by velvet tannins, followed by toast, mocha and notes of cinnamon. Where to begin with this? I'm glad to be able to taste this for the third time over the last two years. I know some people might not agree with me but I definitely prefer her Les Mesneux compared to her Le Mesnil sur Oger. This blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier planted on sandy soil just seem to have this magical charm that had my nose stuck to the rim all night. The 2021 didn't need much time to breathe and evoked attractive aromas of floral, fresh red orchard fruits along with hint of spices. Powerful yet lean, refined and energetic with graceful minerality. Av og til er det fint å sjekke om dyrt nødvendigvis er bedre, og ikke minst verdt det. Drakk Dom Perignon 2013 og Krug Grande Cuvee i helgen. Begge vinene er utvilsomt av ekstremt høy kvalitet. Dom Perignon har hatt en enorm prisutvikling på få år. Krug har steget mer moderat og de koster omtrent det samme nå. Er de verdt prisen? Neppe. Er det gøy å drikke dem? Uten tvil! Konklusjonen min er at det finnes mye godt som er nær samme kvalitet til en vesentlig lavere pris. Selv om så dyre viner ikke kan kalles gode kjøp, gjør en sånn smaking som dette det lettere å finne de gode kjøpene. PS! Om noen leser dette og ønsker å prøve en av dem etterpå. Pierre Gerbais - Champ Viole En av de nye favorittene her i huset er Pierre Gerbais, «den nye vinen fra Champagne»! Aurélien Gerbais, 8. generasjon til å dyrke druer, 4. generasjon til å lage vin. Sammen med Cedric Bouchard, Marie Courtin, Jacques Lassaigne, Ulysse Collin, Horiot, etc utgjør Gerbais et knippe små vinhus som lager Champagne av ypperste kvalitet på egendyrkede druer i Aube. Å ha gått i lære hos Oliver Lamy gjør også noe med forventningene til hva som blir produsert hos Gerbais i årene fremover. Vinmarken Champ Viole består av 50 år gamle druestokker av utelukkende Chardonnay i Celles-sur-Ource. Vinen er en blanding av årganger fra 2011 til 2019. Ett fyrverkeri ut av flasken. Det føles veldig crisp, med sitrusskall og grønne epler som dominerer. Knust flintstein, sjøsprøyt, grillet fersken og crème fraîche. I munnen er den frisk med mye, men behagelig syre. And that’s for a reason: part of my 2024 resolutions, to cut my consumption by 50% and transfer it to other regions in France who have more respect for French consumers. I’ve recently discovered this domain. Got a few bottles for an okay price. We found this one in the restaurant and decided to give it a try. Easy and beautiful Chassagne. All in freshness with good fruit and precision. Still very early and lacks depth for now, but can’t complain for the price and rank. The restaurant was absolutely crazy by the way. What an evening with annesophiepic and jeanlouischave, this one will stay forever in my mind. Two icons of my home region, for food and wine. Couldn’t be happier to have such a special night and dinner. We started with a few whites, including 2021 magnum, for which I did not take any picture. 2021 was surprisingly fluid and very drinkable. Iodine and linden flowers. Very good and open aromatics, almost felt like Viognier. The palate shows richer and more powerful, quite thick, but the wine was more or less served at room temperature. Textured and fat, but shows a rather cool expression overall. More honey and salt. Rather high bitterness. Slightly exotic but again, on the fresher side. We had this right after Ulysse Collin blanc de blancs, and surprisingly it worked well! 2013 shows a deeper yellow robe (picture). The nose is soft and a little shy. A bit of honey with grilled tea leaves. White flowers and a lot of freshness too. The palate has a bit of alcohol but shows quite digest. Bitterness is high too. Soft and caressing, with a good array of yellow fruits. Well, Jean-Louis said it himself, whites in this area may not be the most trendy wines, in front of burgundy in particular, but he still finds some interest in making them. I also believe they drink well on cold/cooler vintages. A good start! Weingut Bertram-Baltes, Treibgut Spätburgunder 2020 This Spätburgunder Treibgut (float well), symbolises the barrels that survived the floods in the Ahr. So that already makes this wine quite special. Only 2533 bottles were produced. Apart from how cool the bottle looks, how does it taste? I think it is safe to say that this is not your ordinary Spätburgunder. It opens up ripe, spicy and extremely concentrated. Beautifully balanced with hints of dark fruits, tobacco and very well integrated oak. Tannins are firm, but once the wine breathes they become soft and well integrated. This wine needs two people who are willing to see the beauty in it, and to give it time to open up. A real conversation starter. Well done.
