Dietary fibres are carbohydrates that our bodies cannot digest fully and what remains when vital nutrients are utilised. Once they reach the large intestine, fibres are be broken down by the gut microbiome (the resident gut bacteria and their genes that are created from a variety of prebiotics from plant foods), providing fuel for their growth. Fibres can provide bulk to our stool and help keep us regularly removing toxins, helping to brush the intestinal lining and remove mucoid plaque. We can find fibres in alkaline whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, beans, nuts and seeds. There are many types of fibre, each with unique properties that influence how they behave in the gut There are many different types of fibre. These include: 🥬 Cellulose and Lignins (found in plant cell walls) 🌾 β-glucans (found in oats and barley) 🍠 Inulin (found in certain cereals, fruit and vegetables). A variety keeps the bacteria in the microbiome healthy, diverse and balanced. The more fibre we eat from raw plants the more enzymes, phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins we get and then that fibre feeds the gut, which in turn helps us absorb more nutrients from new foods…as a perfect cycle. When increasing your fibre intake, do it slowly. Your gastrointestinal tract needs to adapt to the changes in stool bulk and the increases in bacterial breakdown (fermentation) and resulting gas production in the large intestine. THIS IS OFTEN WHY PEOPLE START RAW DIETS & STOP AS THEY BELIEVE THEY CANNOT DIGEST HIGH FIBRE REAL FOODS. After a few weeks the gut microbiome adjusts and the good bacteria takes over the bad. Try adding in small quantities of a new high fibre food every few days and spread your fibre out throughout the day. Even adding more fruit, 1-2 tbs flaxseeds or chia seeds and more salads and greens will create a big difference to your gut health.

It's been quiet on here for a while but life has been busy. A few pics from Krabi! 💙 Photos 1-3: We've been eating lots of delicious healthy homemade food, including the papayas and coconuts from the garden trees! Photos 4-7: There are lots of beautiful paths for cycling behind the house with great views of Krabi's famous monoliths. The paths meander by a number of lakes, some of which you can kayak on. We did kayak one morning, through lily pads and hanging jungle foliage and saw some cool exotic birds. Neither of us had a camera though so no pics! Will have to go again. Photos 8-10: There are a couple of nice beaches to walk the dogs a short drive from the house. Vegan FDOE 🌱 1000 calories/day 🥲 I started week seven at 1200 calories/day and lost 2-3 lbs, but then the progress started to slow so to keep the momentum going I took it down to 1000 yesterday. 1000 calories/day is definitely much lower than I thought I’d need to go for this cut. And I wouldn’t really recommend it for most people. Complete vs incomplete proteins? How much do you need to worry about it if you are plant based? THE TRUTH? Not very much at all... You see, all plant based proteins have the 9 essential amino acids you need to get from food. BUT the amount of those amino acids vary from food to food. Meaning if you were only getting your protein from ONE plant based source, you would likely not be getting enough of your daily amino acid requirements. So the takeaway? Include a VARIETY of protein sources and plants daily, make sure you’re hitting an adequate protein target (.7-1g protein per lb of body weight roughly) and you have your bases covered. Some Fridays ago we went to @sin.ramen.lounge that I have been wanting to explore for sone months. No champagne on glass (but MANY sake options) so I had a cava that was too acidic for me. I absolutely loved my starter and need it in my life again ~ Korean fried oumph with sweet & spicy gochujang glaze. A had gyoza with braised tofu, cabbage, scallion & japanese rice vinegar that was ok. 🥂🥟 Now to the ramen. There was one plant based option, PRIDE ~ tantan ramen with low-hydro wheat noodles in a kombu and soy milk broth, sesame tare, topped with chili bean sprouts, soboro soy mince, negi/scallions, peanuts and layu chili creme. We both expected a miso ramen dish and unfortunately I don’t handle soy very well so I couldn’t finish. It was the creamiest dish I ever had and A was very disappointed but the more I ate, the more I liked it. 🍜 A won’t, but I will probably be back at some point and try the Bao Burger with soy braised portabello, chilimayo, pickled daikon, roasted onion & coriander as a starter. I also want the togarashi fries with the fried oumph. I really liked the atmosphere and the friendly staff.
