💗What’s a better romance read than a governess falling in love with her dark and brooding employer? 💗I just reread this book for the first time since I was probably fifteen! My goodness, it is excellent! While I am not at all a fan of Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre is a spooky read I will forever be in love with. I enjoyed reading this as an adult, and picking up on everything I missed as a teen. Jane’s reasoning against fleeing with Mr. Rochester after the dreadful discovery is such a powerful scene. You really feel how torn she is, and her reasons for standing firm against Mr. Rochester’s pleadings, while 100% right and commendable, still feel like a punch in the gut. We’ve all been there when temptation is looming so irresistibly in front of us. Jane, correctly, runs the other way, at the risk of her own life. Her actions are beautifully rewarded. A dark and dramatic, but wonderfully faith-filled and romantic classic! 💗I should add, St. John irritated me even more this time. I wanted ship him off to India within the first few moments of his appearing. His manipulation was absolutely odious. 🌟 RELECTURE 🌟 Jane Eyre de Charlotte Brontë. À 15 ans, j'ai découvert Jane Eyre que j'avais dévoré. Récemment replongée dans ce classique, mon regard a changé. Adolescente, j'appréciais l'aspect romantique de ce roman. Adulte, c'est plutôt l'enfance de Jane Eyre et la qualité de l'écriture qui ont retenu mon attention. L'héroïne, Jane Eyre, se révèle comme une femme forte et déterminée, courageuse et intelligente. Ses sentiments amoureux ne l'empêchent pas de résister aux injustices. La relation complexe avec Mr. Rochester est riche en rebondissements, offrant des dialogues passionnants qui révèlent la force de caractère de Jane. Le style narratif puissant de Charlotte Brontë constitue un pilier du roman, créant une atmosphère immersive dans l'Angleterre du XIXe siècle. Ses descriptions détaillées, bien que parfois excessives, ajoutent une dimension de suspense délibéré, faisant languir ses lecteurs. Malgré mon admiration pour l'écriture de Brontë, cette relecture ne m'a pas autant emportée que la première fois. A walk to Wycoller with the Parsnips meant that I had to take some pictures of my original copy of Jane Eyre. It’s so odd to think that Wycoller has stood for so long and was once someone’s home. Avui toca parlar d'un clàssic en majúscules😎 📔 «Jane Eyre» de Charlotte Brontë | @vienaedicions | Traduït per Marta Pera Cucurell Cada vegada que llegeixo o escolto algun detall biogràfic de la vida de les escriptores i germanes Brontë, més em sorprenen. Després d'aquesta lectura només em queda per conèixer l'Anne😇 —vaig llegir l'Emily a «Cims borrascosos» fa un temps i ara a la Charlotte—. Així i tot, aquesta novel·la és una mica com treure el cap a la seva història. La Charlotte, la més gran, no només va fer d'institutriu a les altres dues, sinó que volia fundar una escola amb l'Emily, i per això van anar a estudiar juntes a Bèlgica. La protagonista de la novel·la i ella comparteixen vocació, però també —fins a un punt— posició social, aparença i caràcter. La Jane és una heroïna poc convencional. No prové d'una família rica, de fet és òrfena i poc atractiva. Viu amb la seva tieta, que directament la maltracta, i se la treu de sobre enviant-la a un internat. A través dels escenaris que visita la Jane, a mesura que creix, és fàcil fer-se una idea de com era la vida als internats anglesos, al matrimoni o exercint d'institutriu. La veu de l'autora i la Jane es barregen, la seva pròpia experiència s'intercala en alguns punts de la trama. Justament, que no sàpigues el que és completament únic de la Jane fa més especial aquesta protagonista💘 Ens trobem davant d'una dona tossuda, intel·ligent i una mica rebel, que no claudica i que estima apassionadament. Perquè és clar, no hi podia faltar una història d'amor; rebuscada, amb una diferència de posició i algun petit entrebanc —ehem, ehem🫢—. Cuando empecé a leer sus libros, cometí el error de empezar por Villete, libro del que no guardo buen recuerdo pero que más adelante le daré otra oportunidad. La experiencia de leerlo me hizo no saber cómo encajar a Charlotte Brontë y sobretodo a cogerle algo de “miedo” a otra historia suya. Jane Eyre me ha parecido una maravilla. Dueña de un singular temperamento desde su complicada infancia de huérfana, primero a cargo de una tía poco cariñosa y después en la escuela Lowood, Jane Eyre logra el puesto de institutriz en Thornfield Hall para educar a la hija de su peculiar dueño. Poco a poco, el amor irá tejiendo su red entre ellos, pero la casa y la vida en Thornfield Hall guardan un oscuro secreto. Una mujer adelantada a su tiempo que lucha por su independencia, incluso en el amor. Qué obra tan inteligente y que autora tan maravillosa. Visiting Haddon Hall yesterday morning was incredible. One of the best preserved Tudor great houses in England, it has featured in many movies, including THE PRINCESS BRIDE and several adaptations of JANE EYRE, where it makes a perfect Thornfield Hall. JANE EYRE is one of my favorite books, and the 2006 BBC adaptation (with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens) is maybe my favorite film version of any book...it was filmed here, and at every turn through the house and gardens, I could picture another scene from the movie. It's so atmospheric and evocative! The third and fourth pictures are from the Long Gallery, said to be "the most beautiful room in England" (well, at least by the Haddon Hall website 🤣 though it is really lovely). Also in its favor were that it was far less crowded and expensive to visit than nearby Chatsworth (Pemberley--which was still totally worth visiting). I still can't believe we got to go walk around! But here’s something I’ve learned as a reader: none of the stories in the huge canon of retellings and fanfic take away from the originals. Quite the opposite. In most instances, the retellings are borne of a deep and abiding love for the source material. That’s certainly true in my case. » (Mimi Matthews, Author's note to John Eyre) ~ In this retelling of "Jane Eyre" (C. Brontë), the main character is hired as a tutor for two young boys who are taking refuge in silence. A few years before and far away from England, Bertha Mason reports in her journal her encounter with Mr. Rochester. ~ I enjoyed this retelling because it is faithful both by the plot and by the atmosphere. Besides gender twisting, it shows an interesting reading of Jane Eyre in extending the supernatural dimension. 1) The retelling follows well the original plot of Jane Eyre. Indeed in both novels a young person goes to Thornfield as a teacher and is progressively attracted by their employer. It also abides by the personality of the original characters, for instance Rochester is still a person with a heavy weight on their shoulders. Likewise, the dark and odd atmosphere is used once more : Thornfield is still a gloomy castle with a lot of mystery. 2) The obvious difference with Jane Eyre is that the female characters are now male and vice versa, with some exceptions. Even if it impacts their way of speaking and their relationship with the other characters, their main traits are unchanged. This gender twisting is however not the biggest change 3) The most striking innovation is the supernatural dimension. For instance, the mist surrounding Thornfield is given almost magical attributes and is actually the leitmotiv of the story. Supernatural elements where already suggested by C. Brontë as M. Matthews wisely notes in the postscript. I think it was the best approach to retell this book without deriving from the original work. I heard a lot of good things concerning Mimmi Matthews and I am happy to have read her in the end. A favorite all in all! ~ Have a nice week!
