A long long time overdue, I finally watched John Ford's classic western The Searchers. It might be due to all the hype and adoration it has received that slightly affected my experience but it's undoubtedly an incredibly well crafted & aesthetically stunning western, albeit a bit dated in its portrayal of the Red Indians (who were almost hunted to extinction). The overall feeling I got from The Searchers was its deplorable racist undertones. Almost every American character was racist, from John Wayne's more obviously racist & callous Ethan Edwards (who is prepared to kill his niece at one point) to the hypocritical Laurie Jorgensen who comes out with a racial comment but is quite happy to marry Jeffrey Hunter's Martin Pawley, a man who is half Red Indian. The narrative is a little convoluted too. I would have liked a bit more time with certain characters who don't spend much time on screen (due to a major plot line) so I got to know who they are when they are being referred to later on. I also had an issue casting the blue eyed German-American Henry Brandon as Scar. It would have felt more authentic casting an actual Red Indian actor for this role as I'm pretty sure Red Indian's don't have blue eyes. All that being said this might be the best performance from John Wayne I've ever seen him in. I'm not a huge fan of John Wayne due to his monotone acting style. He generally plays the same character in every movie he appears in, but here there are some great expressionistic moments in his face that really add depth to his performance. You can really see the hatred for the Red Indian in his face, without having to utter a word. The biggest & most pleasurable thing I took away from The Searchers was John Ford's direction & his ability to frame a scene. This might be the finest western that captured the majestic beauty of the monolithic Monument Valley. The Searchers - Alan Le May AUDIO REVIEW Note: I listened to this audiobook never having seen the legendary movie, and only knowing that it concerned the kidnapping of a child. I was able to go into the story with no preconceived notions. The Searchers is a brutal and exhilarating novel broken into two tonally different halves. I'm not going to provide a story synopsis because I think it's best to into it knowing as little as possible. The 1st half… If Cormac McCarthy combined The Road and Blood Meridian into a single tale, it might read something like the first half of The Searchers. The story is brutal, disturbing, violent and almost post apocalyptic in its depiction of a dead, lifeless land besieged by marauders. The story even deeps into the supernatural, adding an uncanny atmosphere to the narrative. The 2nd half… The novel switches gears and turns into a tragic manhunt. The mission becomes an endless tale of man versus nature, a long and rugged trek back and forth with almost no hope in sight. The suspense is fantastic, the action is violent and brutal, and even in the shocking end battle, there isn't a hint of melodrama. I can easily see this half of the book being a major influence on George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, with its emphasis on scheming politics, bloody action, and the utter desperation of the heroes. The book has been overshadowed by the film, but I can't recommend the book enough. Here's a cool fact for you (which I'm sure most of us on Merseyside already know!) The song "You'll Never Walk Alone" was written for the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. In the second act of the musical, the character of Nettie Fowler, a cousin of the main character Julie Jordan, sings 'You'll Never Walk Alone' to comfort her when her husband Billy dies. I've got goosebumps writing this. Gerry's iconic voice at the beginning... no music, just a simple "when you". That's it. After this weekend in Burnley, Gerry's version of the song hits differently. Yesterday I was watching (again) John Ford's "The Searchers" and I didn't remember the medal scenes, which, moreover, are important in the story. The funny thing is that it's an order of St. Sava. But it's all wrong, Mr. Ford!! The order was given (in the movie) in 1868, but the order was created in 1883! But then again, why the hell a Confederate army officer would recieve an order of St. Sava?!?!?! To not mention the ribbon...
