I’m probably one of the least religious or spiritual people alive , but today I visited the secluded shrine at Pennant Melangell and I think it’s the closest I’ve felt to peace in a long time. . The shrine is an epicentre for lovers of Romanesque architecture. . I found it a strangely comforting place to visit. Whatever the truth behind the legend of the patron saint of hares, I could indeed imagine an early Christian, or even pre Christian hermitage or community of women here. . Last night in the Cineplex Robeon I watched another Best Picture Oscar winning movie I'd yet to see, 1941's 'How Green Was My Valley'. The story of the Morgan family in Wales at the turn of the century... late 1800s, early 1900s... as life changes in their small coal mining town. The only reason I watched this is because I'd never seen the movie that beat Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" for Best Picture... and I wanted to see just how poor that decision looked decades later. John Ford was brought on to this picture after William Wyler left the project when shooting was moved to California from locations in Wales due to air raids by Germany as World War 2 progressed. Ford gave Hollywood exactly what they expected at the time. This looks like the best movie of the time from a story and cinematography perspective. The problem is... Welles gave us a groundbreaking movie that was ahead of it's time with camera techniques and storytelling that would shape the future of cinema. There's just no comparison between these movies looking back. "Valley" has schmaltzy situations, an intrusive voice over, and sappy storytelling. It's easy to look back at this and roll your eyes. I can say I've seen it. I can draw my own conclusions. Here's the way I'll measure this movie. I'll probably never watch it again... whereas, I can honestly say, I will rewatch 'Citizen Kane' many times. How Green Was My Valley • Richard Llewellyn Set within a rural mining village in South Wales during the reign of Queen Victoria, the story follows the life of Huw Morgan and his beloved Valley. The writing is evocative and poetic. The characters rich and beautiful. But the story is a little slow and meandering and the last two-hundred pages were a slog. Handsome Richard Fraser (born March 15, 1913) arrived in Hollywood during WWII where he was signed to 20th-Century-Fox, who put him to work, including, most famously as Davy Morgan in director John Ford’s family melodrama “How Green Was My Valley” (1941), with Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O’Hara. • He went on to act in a variety of war dramas and action-adventure yarns, usually cast as Squadron Leaders, Lieutenants, or men of the clergy, including as Pastor Aalesen in “Edge of Darkness”, with Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan. • Film aficionados would know him best for his performance as James Vane, the vengeful brother of Sibyl Vane (played by Angela Lansbury) in The Picture of Dorian Gray” (1945), with George Sanders. • Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, after graduating from Sedbergh School, he attended Cambridge University, from where he earned a place at RADA. He started out on the London stage, before emigrating to the U.S., where he married Louise Christine Sheldon, and moved to Hollywood during WWII. • In 1941, he was signed to 20th-Century-Fox, who quickly put him to work, starting out with “Man Hunt”, followed by “A Yank in the RAF” (both 1941), “Joan of Paris”, and as Lt. Jeffreys in “Eagle Squadron” (both 1942). • In 1943, he was dropped from contract, but then signed to Warner Bros. with parts in “Busses Roar” (1942) and “The Gorilla Man” (1943). By mid-decade, he was freelancing, acting in the 1944 morale booster “Ladies Courageous”, with Loretta Young, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and June Vincent, for Universal; then took the lead in a trio of z-grade chillers for PRC Productions, including “Shadow of Terror” and “White Pongo”, opposite Maris Wrixon. • He then moved to Republic Pictures for the Film-Noir “The Tiger Woman” (all 1945), with Adele Mara (pictured here), and as Michael Kent in “The Cobra Strikes” (1948). • Richard retired from acting in 1949, returning to the U.K in 1961 with his then-wife, American actress Ann Gillis, spending most of his last decade working for the BBC in export sales. • The pair divorced in 1970 and Richard married Edna Martin in 1971, he died in London in January 1972 due to cancer, aged 58. • • #iusedtobeinpictures #richardfraser

Esta década premiou verdadeiros clássicos do cinema, como "Gone With The Wind" ou "Casablanca". Também fica marcada pela vitória da primeira mulher negra de um Óscar. Hattie McDaniel (1893 - 1952), que vemos na primeira imagem, venceu o Óscar de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante. Era a única mulher negra na sala, mas para poder estar na cerimónia teve de existir um pedido especial, e mesmo assim McDaniel não pousou para as fotos com os demais colegas e passou a cerimónia numa mesa à parte, longe da restante plateia. Tudo isto se devia à segregação racial vigente no Estado da Califórnia. La capacidad de evocar todo tipo de sensaciones en un entorno perfectamente perfilado y con unos personajes muy bien definidos, eso, magia. "Las cosas cotidianas, las diminutas joyas que adornan los movimientos de la vida se hacían sentir. Una ampolla en el talón, el sudor del cuello, una arruga de un calcetín…" 🪨Gente, me encantaría hacer una mejor reseña pero es imposible. Este best-seller se convirtió en clásico y ahora es una de las mejores lecturas no sólo del año, sino de mi vida. Lo atesoraré por siempre como el narrador atesora una vida de recuerdos. Debéis leerlo, es una preciosidad. Hay ediciones antiguas o descatalogadas como esta, que además tiene una letra minúscula (¿kapasao edhasa?) pero no importa. Es una joya. El mítico actor dijo una vez de ella: «Prefiero vérmelas con un matón de dos metros que con ese huracán devastador llamado Maureen O’Hara». John Ford mantuvo una relación sentimental con #KatharineHepburn durante el rodaje de #MaríaEstuardo ( #MaryOfScotland, 1936). Cuando la actriz tuvo que marcharse de su lado para iniciar el rodaje de una nueva película, #UnaMujerSeRebela ( #AWomanRebels, 1936), de Mark Sandrich, conoció al magnate #HowardHugues, con quien también estuvo a punto de casarse. Nunca volvieron a trabajar juntos, a pesar de la insistencia de John Ford en volver a recuperarla en películas como #LaDiligencia ( #Stagecoach, 1939) o #SieteMujeres ( #7Women, 1966). De todas formas, el cineasta mantuvo una admiración apasionada de por vida que la actriz limitó al terreno amistoso. A partir de ese momento el cine de Ford se centró en hombres solitarios que justificaban su aislamiento en un mundo propiamente masculino apelando al sentido del deber. Hasta que conoció a la bella y exuberante Maureen O’Hara, una mujer apasionada y reprimida a la vez. En ella encontró la imagen ideal con la que relacionar esa especie de impedimento afectivo. La dirigió por primera vez en «¡Qué verde era mi valle!», en la que la actriz interpretó a una malcasada que se enfrenta valientemente a las habladurías de sus convecinos.

Came across my autographed photo of film and tv star Anna Lee today. For years she played Lila Quartermaine on General Hospital, but also appeared in so many great movies including The Sound of Music. She played Sister Margaretta, one of the two nuns who thwarted the Nazis by removing car engine parts, allowing the Von Trapps to escape. She appeared in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? How Green Was My Valley, Mutiny On The Bounty… and so many more. In 1984 a relative of mine got married in California and when we were looking at her wedding photos we were like… “Why is Lila Quartermaine at your wedding?!” Anna was the grooms Aunt. They told her what a fan of hers we were on General Hospital, and she sent a note and this photo. Hoy se conmemora el natalicio 130 del legendario director John Ford, maestro absoluto del Western y fundador del llamado plano americano y que mejor para recordarlo que hablar de una de sus mejores películas: ¡Que Verde era mi Valle! (How Green Was My Valley, 1941), uno de los mejores dramas jamás realizados que se ha ganado una injusta fama por ser la película que derrotó a Cuidadano Kane como Mejor Pelicula en los Oscars. Pero lo cierto es que este largometraje se ganó a pulso su prestigio pues Ford realiza un drama lleno de humanidad, con excelentes actuaciones y una dirección y ritmos envidiables, que siempre están cargados de mucha emoción. Así, el cineasta demostró que era un grande para realizar todos los géneros y era por derecho propio un maestro del cine.
