Happy heavenly birthday to one of my all-time favourite actors, the great James "Jimmy" Stewart! 🎉 « He lived in the midst of all that vanity and was never tainted by it. Most leading men enjoyed the glamour of it all. So many times we would sit after the scene was over and we'd take off our shoes and put our feet up on the table and not even talk. We'd just hang out, because we were both real. it was hard for me to believe that somebody could live in Hollywood for so long, right in the middle of Beverly Hills, and stay real. He deserves a big trophy just for that; one that says: 'I was real'. I'd like that same trophy. » — Kim Novak on James Stewart, The Guardian, 2021 📸 1) At the "Vertigo" premiere, May 9th 1958 2) During the filming of "Vertigo" 3) During the filming of "Bell, Book and Candle" (1958) • • • • • • 🏷 #kimnovak #marilynpaulinenovak #1950s #1960s #goldenageofhollywood #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodglamour #oldhollywoodactress #cinema #vintage #films #retro #oldhollywoodstar #jamesstewart #oldhollywoodactor #vertigo #bellbookandcandle

John Garfield’s career lasted only 14 years and spanned just 36 films, yet in each of this appearances, Garfield’s performances mesmerized audiences and critics. He was an actor’s actor, a perfectionist who threw himself so deeply into roles he became the character. He was a force on and off the screen, taking on studio bosses and director and the press. His great talent was exhibited in meaty roles in films like Between Two Worlds, Pride of the Marines, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Humoresque, and Gentlemen’s Agreement. When a bad heart kept him out of military service during World War II, he teamed with Bette Davis to create the Hollywood Canteen and devoted thousands of hours to the project. The heart that kept him out of the war failed him at 39. Garfield’s closing line in 1947’s Body and Soul, where he confronts a mobster threatening to kill him, also defined the actor’s own fearless nature, “What are you going to do, kill me? Everybody dies.” #filmnoir #books #tbr #turnerclassicmovies #oldhollywood #classicfilm #classicfilmstars #tcm #film #noir #vintage #oldmovie #cinephile #hollywood #1930s #1930sfilm #1940s #moviestars #filmhistory #hollywoodhistory #filmbuffs #classicmovie #classicmoviestars #oldhollywoodactress #oldhollywoodactor #oldhollywoodstars #acecollins #authorsofinstagram #johngarfield #bookstagram

If you ever get the chance to listen to a podcast or read a book about Steve McQueen, you should! He had a very fascinating and chaotic life, and eventually was able to find peace near the end. Ricky Nelson and John Wayne in Rio Bravo (1959). Director Howard Hawks did not want Nelson to be in the film as he considered him to be too young and too lightweight, so he gave him as little lines as he could for a third-billed star. However, he did admit later that having Nelson on the poster probably added 2 million to the box office (IMDb). 📷: Pinterest #rickynelson #johnwayne #riobravo #1959 #1950s #film #movies #hollywood #oldhollywood #classichollywood #oldhollywoodglamour #oldhollywoodglam #oldhollywoodstars #oldhollywoodmovies #oldhollywoodactor #oldhollywoodbeauty

Veronica Lake was less than five feet tall, but what she lacked in height, the blue-eyed blonde made up for in beauty. Her mother moved the teen to Hollywood and enrolled her in acting school as a way of coping with Veronica’s diagnosed schizophrenia. At 17, she landed a minor part in a film, and by the time she was twenty she was a star. She would win millions of fans in Hold Back the Dawn, Sullivan’s Travels, This Gun for Hire, I Married a Witch, and So, Proudly We Hail. Yet, more than her acting, it was her “Peekaboo” hairstyle that made her iconic. With her looks and talent Lake should have likely remained a big box office draw, but her worsening mental illness led to erratic behavior and alcoholism. She was in her early 30s when her career ground to a halt. She spent the final twenty years of her life living in poverty and was all but forgotten when she died in 1973. Sadly, Lake’s ashes remained unclaimed at the funeral home for several years. #filmnoir #books #tbr #turnerclassicmovies #oldhollywood #classicfilm #classicfilmstars #tcm #film #noir #vintage #oldmovie #cinephile #hollywood #1930s #1930sfilm #1940s #moviestars #filmhistory #hollywoodhistory #filmbuffs #classicmovie #classicmoviestars #oldhollywoodactress #oldhollywoodactor #oldhollywoodstars #acecollins #authorsofinstagram #veronicalake #bookstagram

• Photos of Marlene Dietrich taken by her lover, Mercedes de Acosta. They met in 1933. This is an excerpt of a love letter that Mercedes sent to Marlene, which is so incredibly sweet: “You have only been gone a short while and already I miss you so much. Still the disturbing odour of you lingers in my room and makes it difficult for me to pull myself together. I am infinitely touched by the beautiful things you have given me and by your generous thoughts of me— but you must not spend your money on me— possessions mean little to me. Everything you have given me is beautiful but they are extra beautiful because you give them. One flower from your hand I would love as deeply. Words are stupid and Earth round— I would like to have someday as beautiful as the light of the yellow sun in the sky— as deep as the sea— as trembling as the pale little shiny new moon— to tell you how much— how much— how much I love you. Blessed one with star eyes I love you!“

In a letter to his sister, Henry Fonda once described his wife Margaret Sullavan as “cream and sugar on a dish of hot ashes.” Both actors were born on May 16, he in 1905 and she in 1909, and their marriage was as volatile as any great stage tragedy. They met at the University Players on Cape Cod in 1929 before marrying from 1931-33, and of their union, Fonda said, “I never knew I had a temper until I got married. Time after time that slender girl’s words stunned me like a wasp…We were at each other constantly, screaming, arguing, fighting. I don’t know whether I stamped out in a rage or whether Sullavan threw me out.” A particular blowout occurred at a 4th of July picnic when he collected spare change to pay for fireworks, and an offended Sullavan poured a pitcher of ice water over his head. “They fought like cats and dogs about absolutely everything,” said director Josh Logan, who said Fonda was equally difficult. “When Fonda is against you, look out.” Citing their intense strive for perfection, he believed the core problem was that neither could wear the other down. After she moved on with director Jed Harris, Fonda “never got Sullavan out of his head, let alone his heart.” Of equal jealousy over his marriage to Frances Ford Seymour, his daughter Jane Fonda said, “She just couldn’t stand thinking that she didn’t control him.” With Harris, a man “universally loathed for his wanton cruelty,” Sullavan proposed a suicide pact. “I’m ready to kill myself out of love for you,” she had said. “If we killed ourselves, at least we’d be together forever.” She left him to marry director William Wyler, who at one point drove in a rainstorm to Harris’ house and beat him up in response to a jealous phone call. They divorced and she wed twice more, including to Leland Hayward until he left her for Slim Keith, ex-wife of director Howard Hawks. Sullavan, who suffered from acute hearing loss and a lifelong fear of deafness, was utterly destroyed. Disowned by her children, she had a nervous breakdown before her death on January 1, 1960. Found unconscious in a hotel room with a bottle of pills, she was pronounced dead in the hospital, at the age of 50. *MORE INFO BELOW*

At 5’4”, Jimmy Cagney was far too short to play a leading man, and yet he did. A fighter and a dancer, he rocked movies for two decades with portrayals of gangsters, detectives, musicians, and songwriters. Cagney found fame in 1931 with The Public Enemy, where he played a little guy with a big chip on his shoulder. He continued to embrace that persona for three decades in movies like The Crowd Roars, The Roaring Twenties, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and Mister Roberts. Yet, of all his 70 starring roles, it was his riveting portrayal of Cody Jarrett, a man with no redeeming qualities, in White Heat, that defined his onscreen persona. He proved that when it came to tough guys, no one was tougher than Cagney. He said the secret to acting was saying every word like you meant it, and movie goers believed everything he said. #filmnoir #books #tbr #turnerclassicmovies #oldhollywood #classicfilm #classicfilmstars #tcm #film #noir #vintage #oldmovie #cinephile #hollywood #1930s #1930sfilm #1940s #moviestars #filmhistory #hollywoodhistory #filmbuffs #classicmovie #classicmoviestars #oldhollywoodactress #oldhollywoodactor #oldhollywoodstars #acecollins #authorsofinstagram #jamescagney #bookstagram

• “He was great fun as a father, and Winkie and I would never miss any opportunity to be with him. Being the younger and also at home all the time, I had more chance than my brother, and never had a child had a more entertaining companion. He had a rare talent of being able to suit his humor and his interests to whatever age his children happened to be. Perhaps we unconsciously suited our age to his, but whatever the case, I cannot remember a time when he talked down to us or failed to get the same ridiculous glee out of the little things. For at least the first twelve years of my life, I was his shadow, feeling no need for friends of my own, riding with him, learning to dance or draw or read with him, and always laughing with him.” - Leslie Ruth Howard, on her famous father, Leslie Howard, in her book ‘A Quite Remarkable Father’, published in 1959.❤️
