Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the opening of the two Cleopatra’s; one of Vivien’s greatest undertakings on the stage. It was the year of the Festival of Britain, and both Vivien and Olivier wanted to do something special to mark the event. ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ was mooted as a possible choice for the season, and the designer Roger Furse who was a mutual friend, had the idea to perform George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ concurrently with Shakespeare’s ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’. It was a daring experiment; the dramas were separated in writing by over three centuries, but audiences would prove to be as inspired by the contrasts in the two differing Cleopatra’s as Vivien was. No sooner had the project been announced than it promptly sold out for the entire 26 week run. Happy heavenly birthday to actor Stewart Granger born on this date in 1913! He shared a fairly honest friendship with Vivien Leigh and worked with her on both stage & screen. In 1944, when they were filming Caesar and Cleopatra (shown here) he embarked on an affair with actress Deborah Kerr while his wife was pregnant. Granger was taken aback one day on the set when Vivien told him “in the waspish voice she sometimes used” to concentrate on his work rather than on Deborah. Oh, and Vincent Dutrait is making the artwork 🖌️, which is clearly noticeable on the cover! 🤩 🎵Sirens - @envyborngames I just briefly saw this game mentioned somewhere, but I immediately added it to the list. You will play as 2 rival sirens 🧜, trying to attract oblivious sailors to your side of the cliff. To do that you draft cards that you have to arrange into songs that are scored according to 4 criterion. Whoever baits 2 sailors first wins! 🏛️Caesar & Cleopatra - @KOSMOS_verlag This will be a remake of a game from 1997. That one currently sits at 6.4 at BGG, which doesn’t sound that good, but remakes such as this usually balance things around adds more interesting mechanics. 😉 The concept sounds fun: you send out agents to influence Roman officials to sway them in your favor, either playing numbered cards face-up or face-down. So bluffing and outsmarting your rival is the primary goal! 😈 👺Lairs - @kidstablebg Another delightful idea for a game: 💡 you and your rival will use walls, traps, treasures, and monsters to each create a dungeon, after which you will have to explore the creation of the other. Happy celestial birthday to Norman Parkinson who would have turned 111 today. Norman Parkinson was one of the Twentieth Century’s most celebrated fashion photographers who worked for a wide range of publications, notably Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country and other international magazines. In a career that spanned seven decades, Parkinson also shot the British Royal Family, and some of the leading figures from the worlds of film, theatre, and music which brought him worldwide recognition. By the end of his life he had become a household name, the recipient of a CBE, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and the subject of a large scale retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Norman Parkinson died whilst on location in Singapore shooting for Town & Country in 1990. Parkinson shot Vivien a number of times including for the July 1951 issue of UK Vogue to promote her and Larry’s forthcoming appearance in ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ and ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ for the Festival of Britain which would become one of her greatest theatrical triumphs. In 1951, the Oliviers took on quite a task for the Festival of Britain, performing in Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternating nights. If there was ever any question as to whether Vivien Leigh had serious doubts and nerves when it came to her performances, these excerpts from letters written to Elia Kazan in 1951 show that she did indeed. "It appears we have decided to produce the Shaw Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare Antony and Cleo. This has thrown me into a perfect FIT of nerves, more particularly as people seem to think it such a GOOD IDEA. Michael Benthall is doing the productions with Larry, and Bobby [Helpmann] is playing Appolodorus and Octavius Caesar, Roger Furse the sets and Audrey Cruddas the costumes. I'm hoping to have mine made in Paris as that at least will cheer one along." "I am lying here fretting and sweating [she had the flu] - miserable at being away from rehearsals. We open in Manchester on 23rd [of April, 1951] with 'Caesar and Cleo' - and on 1st with 'Antony & C' then to London - where we open on CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS!! Sheer folly! But the only thing to do, isn't it? I'm 20 years too old for the former and, traditionally at least, too young - ha!ha! - for the latter - all of which is reducing me to a nervous wreck! Happy celestial birthday to Flora Robson who would have turned 122 today. She first appeared alongside Vivien in ‘Fire Over England’ in 1937. Eight years later she starred with her again in Gabriel Pascal’s ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ in the memorable role of the nurse Ftatateeta. In the transition of ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ from stage to screen, only one new scene was agreed upon by George Bernard Shaw and Pascal (another was written but cut). This is the scene in Cleopatra’s bedroom in the Palace at Alexandria where she wakes up in the morning after her arrival, realising afresh all the possibilities of her Queenly situation. She asks her Ftatateeta “What will Caesar do with me now I am a Queen?” to which she responds “Ask rather what you will do with him. My child you have charmed him. You are safe, you are powerful. We visited Shaw's Corner a few years ago. The home of George Bernard Shaw. It is now lovingly cared for by The National Trust. The house is beautiful and full of Shaw's belongings. Sadly, his writing hut was closed, at that time, because it had been damaged, but it was still a real privilege to be stood where Vivien Leigh had been. According to Plutarch a seer once told Julius Caesar that harm would come to him on the ides of March. On the 15th March 44BC (ides of March), On his way to the Theatre of Pompey he passed the seer and joked that it had come and no harm had come to him. When inside the theatre Caesar was stabbed to death by up to 30 members of the senate. March 12, 1952 - Vivien Leigh is photographed in the New York City apartment which she & husband Laurence Olivier had sublet for the duration of their time on Broadway. They had brought their performances in Shaw’s “Caesar and Cleopatra” & Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” to the US after a good deal of time on the London stage with them. Vivien was in the midst of a wave of success having been named in an Associated Press newspaper poll as the best actress of the year for her role as Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and for which she had already been nominated for an Academy Award. Later in the month, after this photo was taken, she won that Oscar. Despite all the accolades, Vivien was not well during this time period. By all accounts, she was frazzled and quite slim and those closest to her felt she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. R.I.P British character actress Charmain Eyre, who was sadly killed in a roadside accident on January 15, 2024, in Harbourne, South-West Birmingham, aged 96. • Fiercely independent until the end, her family paid a heartfelt tribute: “Charmain was a much-loved aunt and great aunt and good friend to many. We will treasure our memories and the many good times we shared with her”. • Born Charmain Abrahams in Birmingham in 1927, she began her acting career during WWII on stage, then moved to television during the late 1940s, with a string of early TV-movies for the BBC, including as Mavis Pink in the comedy drama “Shooting Star” (1949). • The stage was her mainstay though, touring with stage companies around Northern Europe and as far as Australia and New Zealand. In London, she joined the Birmingham Repertory Company production of “Caesar and Cleopatra” (1956), with Albert Finney, at The Old Vic, and supported Ian McKellan in “Edward II” (1970), at the Piccadilly Theatre, among others. • During the 1950s, she took the female lead in TV adaptions of “Follow the Plough” (1953), “The Facts of Life” (1954), and “The Miser” (1956). She also joined the cast of the short-lived TV series “Precious Bane” (1957), starring Petra Davies and Patrick Troughton, and was Margaret Saunders in the daytime soap “Emergency-Ward 10”, in 1959. • On film, she acted in “Corridors of Blood” (1958), starring Boris Karloff, Betta St. John and Christopher Lee, and joined Laurence Harvey and Jane Asher in “The Winter’s Tale” (1967). • One career highlight came later, in 1981, when she joined the cast of the ITV teatime soap, “Crossroads”, set in a fictional motel in the Midlands, as Mavis Hooper, wife of motel garage hand Sid Hooper (played by Stan Stennett; pictured here) until her character was killed off by show producer Philip Bowman in 1986 from a harrowing bout of pneumonia. • “It was exactly the way I wanted it,” she said at the time. “Better to go out with a band than a whimper”. Charmain was one of a bevy of high-profile characters to get the chop, including motel manager David Hunter (played by Ronald Allen) and his wife Barbara (played by Sue Lloyd). Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra in the 1945 film version of Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra Oliver Messel designed the sets and the costumes for this extravagant film, and was heaped with praise from the critics: "The sets are gigantic. Oliver Messel's décor and costumes are richly imaginative in Technicolor, for once agreeably restrained. Made though it was in difficult war-time conditions, Caesar and Cleopatra is as spectacular as anything the screen has ever given us." -- The Daily Telegraph The filming was fraught with problems, one of which included an altercation between Messel and director Gabriel Pascal, during which Vivien came to his defense: "Gabriel Pascal took a dislike to a long black wig which Oliver had designed for Jean Simmons. Pascal strode on to the set, snatched off the wig, grabbed wigs worn by other girls in the scene, and tried them on Miss Simmons. Oliver, green with exhaustion after an all-night designing session, watched in horror. He ran along behind Pascal, pleading with him to put the wigs back. When arguments failed, he announced that he was walking out of the production. Gathering up some ornate fans which he had lent from his parents' famous collection, he turned to leave. Vivien Leigh stepped into the breach. "If Oliver goes," she said firmly, "so do I." Pascal gave way. Oliver stayed. So did Vivien Leigh - and Jean Simmons played the scene in the black wig." And lastly, a bit of trivia: Due to his successful work on Suddenly Last Summer, Oliver Messel was actually the first costume designer hired for the later film Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor, and according to wig maker Stanley Hall, "Cleopatra was an exciting project for me to make the wigs designed by Oliver. I had so admired the Caesar and Cleopatra film with Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains and Oliver was such a master and genius who always extended one's potential to produce the definitive effect." However, Messel was subsequently replaced by Irene Sharriff. He worked with Vivien on two occasions, the first was the set and costume design for the legendary Old Vic production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in 1937 and the second was Gabriel Pascal’s film of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ in 1945. Oliver Messel was the leading British stage designer of the mid-20th century. He won international acclaim for his exquisite taste and mastery of period style in revues, plays, films, interiors, buildings, musicals, operas and ballets, becoming one of the most sought-after and highly-paid scenery and costume designers of his era. Designing for ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’, an opulent Egyptian epic at the height of wartime austerity was no easy feat for Oliver Messel, but necessity was the mother of invention, for despite the shortage of supplies and workroom staff, his costumes and décor somehow achieved the gossamer dreamlike quality of an Egyptian fairytale. ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ received it’s initial London premiere 78 years ago this week. Strangely after this special charity screening the film wouldn’t go on general release in the U.K. or the U.S. until September 1946- almost 10 months later. George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Caesar and Cleopatra’ was directed by Gabriel Pascal, and was the most expensive film ever made at the time. Despite being a box office hit, it failed to earn back its colossal budget.
