“Deserted area. Small group, big umbrella. Champagne from the trunk compartment of the car, neatly packed in dry ice. I will not attempt to describe her bathing suit except to say I have a photo of her in that suit I look at when the poetry is going bad and I need a charge.” - Norman Rosten, Marilyn: An Untold Story

“Can you believe when I told Marilyn I was coming to see you, she got upset and said I was neglecting her for you, my own child… She needs my help, yet she treats me so badly sometimes, it’s as if she’s confused me with her real mother and she distrusts me, no matter what I do. It’s making me sick. I should be with you, my husband, with my baby, and no matter what I do, it’s never enough. If she didn’t need me, I’d leave. Life’s too short for all this.” - Paula Strasberg to Susan Strasberg, Marilyn and Me: Sisters, Rivals, Friends —— Many people criticise the Strasbergs for the immense pressure they allegedly placed on Marilyn, contributing to her psychological issues. However, it’s often overlooked that Marilyn herself chose to have them as acting coaches. The Strasbergs treated her more like a family member than a student—a huge contrast to Lee Strasberg’s reputedly harsh treatment of other pupils. Marilyn, known for being both excessively needy with her inner circle and occasionally dismissive when things didn’t go her way, evidently had a complex relationship with them, one which I think is hard to understand unless you live it yourself, like Susan and her brother Johnny had. I particularly sympathise with Paula, Susan, and Johnny. Lee seemingly imposed Marilyn on them, making her the centre of their lives. While Lee was having affairs and known for his overly critical behaviour with students, Paula became the person imploring Marilyn to focus on work and did EVERYTHING for her. She was also caught in a difficult position, supporting Marilyn while her own children faced their own personal challenges. Despite Paula being paid, it is likely that Lee benefitted financially due to his excessive spending habits (on books mostly), leaving Paula to manage Marilyn’s issues resulting in Paula facing disapproval from directors and cast members, simply because Marilyn depended on her. Paula was probably undercompensated for the burdens she endured. While Marilyn’s troubles were not solely her fault—as she too lacked adequate support—I feel a profound empathy for Paula, despite her strange ways.

Marilyn Monroe enjoying the pool at Palm Springs Racquet Club with agent Johnny Hyde. (1949) “I was terribly lucky in meeting a man who became not only my agent, but my dearest friend. When I first mentioned my acting hopes to Hyde, he didn’t smile. He listened raptly and said, “Of course you can become an actress!” He was the first person who over took my ambitions seriously and my gratitude for this alone is endless”

“My most poignant memory of Marilyn is of how distressed, troubled and still radiant she looked when I arrived in Nevada to work on The Misfits. She asked immediately how she looked and she wanted and needed reassurance. It was four years since we had worked together, and she looked into my eyes for a long moment to make sure she could still trust me. Then she drew her breath, sighed and said, “I’m thirty-four years old. I’ve been dancing for six months [on Let’s Make Love]. I’ve had no rest, I’m exhausted. Where do I go from here?” She was not asking me - she was asking herself. This was less than a year before she died. It occurred to me then that when she had lived with the fantasy of Marilyn that she had created, that fantasy had sustained her, but now the reality had caught up with her and she found it too much to bear.” - Eve Arnold, photographer. #AD #Affiliate You can buy your own 16 x 20 inch (40 x 50 cm) poster for £30 via the link in my bio 🤩 I have two of my own in my office and LOVE them

“Marilyn was a photographer’s dream subject with her clothes on, and even more stunning with them off. Her wet skin glistened. Her eyes sparkled. Her smile was provocative. There was no hint of the woman who had been in trouble for most of her life. As I shot, I was sure that the pictures I was taking were going to be beautiful and unforgettable. The flow of her spine complemented her natural curves as the water reflected the lights, and the whole scene came alive.” - Lawrence Schiller, Marilyn & Me: A Photographer’s Memories

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 THEME OF THE WEEK: Marilyn in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 During the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl, Marilyn Monroe had mentioned her desire to meet Queen Elizabeth II. Luckily for Marilyn, an opportunity arose. On the 29th October 1956, Marilyn attended a presentation of the film The Battle of the River Plate at London's Empire Theatre, where Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret were also in attendance. Marilyn, wearing a revealing and unconventional gold lame gown, nervously awaited the Queen's arrival alongside other notable attendees. In her excitement, she nervously licked away her lipstick, hoping to make a favourable impression on the monarch she had longed to meet. When Queen Elizabeth II reached Marilyn they exchanged a warm smiles and engaged in a brief conversation about being neighbours in Windsor. Marilyn later recalled, "The Queen is very warm-hearted. She radiates sweetness.” Princess Margaret also took the opportunity to engage with Marilyn. They chatted about cycling and discussed the production of The Sleeping Prince (as it was known at this time). Marilyn was thrilled to have the chance to interact with both the Queen and the Princess. In 1961, an article was released that mentioned the Queen's mutual fascination with Marilyn. The article revealed that Queen Elizabeth II had watched all of Marilyn's films and reportedly said to a friend, "I thought Miss Monroe was a very sweet person." You can read more about Marilyn’s time in England, how she met the Queen and the true story behind The Prince and the Showgirl in @mmwritergirl book When Marilyn Met the Queen.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 THEME OF THE WEEK: Marilyn in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 “She finally made an appearance at 7.30 in the evening, looking like a radiantly beautiful child, smiling shyly - and not a word about being nine hours late… I took several pictures in colour and also some normal black and white pictures - well, hardly 'normal, as I used a wind machine to blow her hair across her face, and spread Vaseline over a piece of glass in front of the lens. It was one of these black and white pictures which became Arthur Miller's favourite, out of so many thousands of pictures of her, and it hung in his study until it was abandoned, much later when Marilyn and Arthur parted. She signed one of the windswept pictures to me: ‘Dearest Jack, if only I could be the way you created me. I love you. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 THEME OF THE WEEK: Marilyn in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 On 17 July 1956, Laurence Olivier, Arthur Miller, and Marilyn Monroe attended a performance of Vivien Leigh in Noël Coward's "South Sea Bubble" at the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End. Following a series of press conferences, Marilyn spent the morning of that Tuesday studying her script. By evening, Olivier was welcoming the Millers to the theatre. The night of their visit was anything but low-key; Marilyn, dressed in a flesh-toned dress and raincoat, drew immediate attention. As they settled into row J, the audience buzzed with excitement, and curious crowds gathered outside. Inside the theatre, many spectators were more fixated on Marilyn than on the stage. After the play, while Vivien took her bows, the audience directed their applause towards Marilyn, who responded with a gracious wave. Post-performance, Marilyn, Arthur, and Olivier joined Vivien backstage in her dressing room. As the evening drew to a close, a large crowd waited outside, unsure of where to gather due to the presence of Marilyn’s chauffeur-driven Humber Pullman and Olivier’s Bentley. The commotion peaked when reporters bombarded Marilyn's chauffeur for details of their plans, to which he responded, exasperated, "Honestly, I don't know where I am going from here." Eventually, police were called as the crowd swelled to at least a thousand people. They managed to clear a path for the celebrities, who left the theatre at 10:50 p.m., greeted by cheers along Shaftesbury Avenue. The actors quickly boarded Olivier’s Bentley and escaped the ensuing chaos, which left Marilyn’s chauffeur to fend off reporters suggesting his presence was a mere diversion. Later, the group enjoyed a late dinner at Olivier’s apartment in Lowndes Place before Marilyn and Miller returned to Englefield Green at 2 a.m. Please be sure to check out When Marilyn Met the Queen by Michelle Morgan.

On 28 April 1952 Marilyn Monroe was hospitalised at Cedars of Lebanon hospital for appendix surgery. It is believed she also had gynaecological surgery at the same time or she feared there was a risk, as she had stuck a note to the surgeon stating: “Dear Dr. Rabwin, Cut as little as possible I know it seems vain but that doesn’t really enter in to it. The fact I’m a woman is important and means much to me. Save please (I can’t ask enough) what you can – I’m in your hands. You have children and you must know what it means – please Dr Rabwin – I know somehow you will! Thankyou – thankyou – thankyou – For God’s sakes Dear Doctor no ovaries removed – please again do whatever you can to prevent large scars. Thanking you with all my heart, Marilyn Monroe” These photos were taken during her recovery.

- 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐋𝐘𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐑𝐎𝐄 Current mood 🌙 One night in 1953, Marilyn called photographer Andre de Dienes saying she was unable to sleep. She proposed that they meet to take pictures somewhere in a dark valley in Beverly Hills. Without a flash or professional lighting, he lit Marilyn’s face with the headlight of his car. This was the first time that de Dienes “came face to face with the 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠 𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 of Marilyn.” “She was 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚, 𝙪𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮, on the 𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙧,” de Dienes said. “She wanted me to come and fetch her. She suggested we could take a series of photos with one of the darkened streets of Beverly Hills as a backdrop.” Apparently, Marilyn told de Dienes to title the shots taken that night as “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜.”
