What a truly splendid day it was last Wednesday, when we embarked on a journey with @gardenmasterclass to the remarkable @sergehillproject and Plant Library conceived by the @suestuartsmith and @tomstuartsmith. This initiative is designed to connect individuals from the local and wider community to the transformative wonders of gardens and nature, shedding light on their vital role in promoting mental and physical health. Sue personally welcomed us into the heart of the project, sharing its core values and the essential role that gardens play in our overall wellbeing. A key element of the project is the Plant Library, home to a selection of tried and tested plants that are useful for both gardening enthusiasts and professional designers. Despite the imminent Chelsea Flower Show, Tom generously gave us his entire day, engaging us with discussions about the project and the challenges entailed in encouraging people to engage with gardening and nature. He readily shared his knowledge about specific plants and how he uses them in his own work. The highlight of the afternoon was an exclusive tour led by Tom around the wider (private) garden, where he shared insights into the practicalities and sustainable practices adopted. Feeling incredibly privileged to have had this experience and eagerly awaiting to visit the project again!

Che dire, fatiche ripagate e la capacità di guardare oltre e la gioia di aver dedicato il nostro corso a @mauro_anelli I leave Offagna with these three pictures, a nice walk through Ancona at the Passetto, feeling a bit "Anconetano" and especially the photo with Eleonora and Enrico two beautiful people, two friends and two dreamers like me. The seminar went well beyond our expectations with a large, attentive and enthusiastic audience. #suestuartsmith, Margherita Volpini , Ania Balducci , Monica Botta were perfect and we were proud to host them. We presented the "sustainable horticulture and gardens" course that will start in September and we will open registration through #amapmarche shortly . What can I say, labors paid off and the ability to look beyond and the joy of having dedicated our course to @mauro_anelli #flower #sky #blue #plant #purple #terrestrialplant #arecales #woodyplant #tree #floweringplant #electricblue #petal #annualplant #building #regionemarche #facade #shrub #evergreen #amapmarche #terapeuticalgarden #plantstem #corsidiformazione #corsidigiardinaggio #wildflower #pine #subshrub #visitoffagna #offagna #botanical

📖 The Well-Gardened Mind Judging by its title, a casual reader may think that 'The Well-Gardened Mind' is a self help book in which the author argues how people can transform their lives and improve their mental health by taking up the hobby of gardening. Indeed, Sue Stuart-Smith cites many real life examples and scientific evidence to illustrate how prisoners, veterans, at-risk youth, the elderly, and the mentally ill can all benefit from the healing power of gardening.🪴 A more discerning reader, however, will know that the author accomplishes a lot more than arguing for the point that every gardener already knew. The garden is magical. It gives pleasure and joy. It has the power to heal. Everyone who has ever tended a garden knows this. But not every gardener knows why. This is where she distinguishes herself from other self help authors. She explains the reasons by delving deeper into the existential meaning of doing and being, our relationship to mother earth, our experience of time, cognition in relation to nature, and the cyclical significance of growth and decay, living and dying. In other words, this book offers more than support for mental health. It is a book of meditation on the interconnectedness of all things on earth. An ambitious undertaking no doubt, but highly readable and full of surprises, this book is a must read for everyone.📚 #bookstagram #reading #booklover #bookreview #bookcover #livreanglais #suestuartsmith #thewellgardenedmind #gardening #lireunlivre #livrestagram #jardin #jardinage #essay #englishessay

When we invest in our future, prioritizing aspects such as our health, education, life insurance with living benefits, retirement planning, legacy building, and nurturing relationships, we can be confident that we are laying a strong foundation for a life of health, abundance, harmony, and peace. By making conscious choices to invest in these areas, we not only secure our well-being but also contribute to the well-being of those around us, fostering a legacy of positivity and prosperity for generations to come. “When we sow a seed, we plant a narrative of future possibility.” Sue Stuart-Smith Inspiring Quotes wrote: “Sue Stuart-Smith is an author and prominent psychotherapist who believes gardening can help us process our thoughts and feelings. For #worldbookday I'm sharing with you my current read. The Well Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith. The author "investigates the magic that many gardeners have known for years - working with nature can radically transform our health, wellbeing and confidence". But she delves much deeper than that and explores "What lies behind the restorative power of the natural world?". I'm only on Chapter 2 but am already hooked & know that I'm going to enjoy every page. I just wish there were a few more hours in the day! Yesterday, at The Amaltas Hour, we planted vegetables, discussed the importance of organic living, read our featured book, and savored the scrumptious strawberries from @ayedaeats . As I prepared for the workshop, I was in doubt about whether or not to feature Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Gabor Mate’s “Hold on to Your Kids” because this is not a book on gardening, until I realized that this does not mean it has nothing to do with gardening, or that gardening does not have anything to do with this book. Good authors enable you to seize life; they raise you above the blinds of specialization and offer you a chance to amalgamate seemingly independent aspects of life. Families are being increasingly pulled away. Even when we are with our children, we are worried about sending them to schools, and schools? They are scurrying about sending them to College. Amidst this hassle, a child loses faith in the community and slowly internalizes the toxins of hyper-independence. Children and young adults, whether they be motorbike Wheelers type school drop-outs or party going drugs-addicted college students type, are resorting to their peers for their complex emotional needs. These needs can only be met healthily if we listen to what Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Mate have to say about community, dependence, and attachment. As I read a short paragraph from the book, one of our participants shared a personal anecdote about their younger sibling and the problems peer orientation is creating for the teenage child. It immediately rewound five years of my interactions with children from elite private schools , lower-class private schools, and even madrassas. In most places, children are disturbed, but no one wants to talk about it. We live under the impression that everything is alright, but if things look right, it is because children cannot articulate their problems. And we adults, parents or individuals from the community, are not playing our part to do it for them or at least listen to those who are articulating these problems. . . Continued in comments...

I love reading. As many of you do also. I aim to read a book a week. I don’t read fiction, with the exception of most of your comments and posts. Just kidding. I love reading books on human health and performance, empowering true stories, inspirational content, nature, spirituality and more. It’s essential in my life. Just like not drinking enough water some days, and I feel thirsty at the end of the day, I feel ‘de-read-hydrated’ when I don’t read for a couple of days. It’s as much nourishment for my mind and heart as food is for my body. I’ve had plenty of time this year, so I’ve read a lot more than usual, and even if I was busy, I’d still read lots. A book per week or two, plus usually a science, health or lifestyle magazine as well. I’ve read some amazing books this year, which I wanted to share with you in this post. I have many more on my hot list, in my house, or coming, which I’m really looking forward to reading in the new year. So if you’re into or curious about what I’m into, here is my hot list, in no particular order, which I read this year, that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: - Breath, by #jamesnestor - The Myth of Normal, by #gabormate - Tiny Habits, by #bjfogg - The Gift, by #editheger - Why We Sleep, by #drmatthewwalker - The Art of Resilience, by #rossedgley - Sensitive, by Jenn Granneman & Andre Solo - Be More Human, by Tony Riddle, #natlifecoach - Welcoming the Unwelcome, by #pemachodron - The Body Keeps the Score, by #besselvanderkolk - Dopamine Nation, by #drannalembke - Just One Thing, by #drmichaelmosley - Facing the Fifties, by Dr Peter O'Connor - The Well Gardened Mind, by #SueStuartSmith - The Daily Stoic, by #ryanholiday & Stephen Hanselman (this was my go-to daily read each morning with coffee, and I'll start a new 'page-a-day daily read' this year) Of course, this list is not exhaustive. I’ve read others, and some of these are bigger books, with heavy content, that take some time to digest, or require little breaks from sometimes. I also listen to A LOT of podcasts. It’s another form of nourishment, via audio, for my mind, body and soul. If you’re not into podcasts yet, or new to the whole scene, I can also recommend some incredible p

I wrote a review of "The Well Gardened Mind" (by Sue Stuart-Smith) in the "Best Selling Books" of the Asahi Newspaper in December 16. The author is a psychiatrist who explains why gardening is good for the mind from a scientific and horticultural therapy perspective. I found the book very interesting and entertaining. Nearing the end of this gem by Sue Stuart Smith. Its everything I love about life in one book. History, horticulture, social healing, archeobotany, and psychology (just to name a few!) For example, in the chapter on war and gardening, did you know that “astonishing as it may seem, dugout gardens were not that unusual and they were created by soldiers on both sides”, in the trenches. It reminds me of the book Swallows, (see earlier book post). On how looking up at the birds nesting sites, many of the soldiers found hope, interest, and endearment to the tiny acrobats. What an interesting and fruitful marriage of subjects! ✨🌱📚🥳 #thewellgardenedmind #suestuartsmith #horticulture #naturetherapies #gardening #archeobotany #botany #history #winterreads #bubblebathreads #goodreads

12/8/2023, 4:12:00 PM

Sue Stuart-Smith knows that growing things from seed is the most rewarding. "I see gardening as a reiteration. I do a bit, then nature does her bit, then I respond to that. And so it goes on, not unlike a conversation. It isn't whispers or shouts or talk of any kind, but in this back-and-forth there is a delayed and sustained dialogue. I have to admit that i am sometimes the slow one to respond." She talks about grieving and finding a sense of place in a garden. Gardening is ritual working within us where two creativities meet: human and nature's. Stuart-Smith sees caring for plants as showing gentleness in a safe environment. We need prospect and refuge, a combination of enclosure and openness that garden can provide - a sactuary from turbulence of the world and mind. Garden is a space free from fear, helping us reconnect to something unspoilt in our mind. (Not a word-for-word quote) "We feel alive during flourishing. Experiencing fleeting beauty leaves a trace in the mind that survives its passing." Finding from nature/gardening/flowers/working outside "the serenity of life". Stuart-Smith tackles the soothing effect of gardening to prisoners, people with depressive disorders or of advanced age. The latter do not ask for much other than to shape their life in this world. Loneliness is detrimental. Enjoyment of beauty can provide a way of companionship. Even time renews itself when gardening. We submit ourselves to the rythm of garden time. From gardening we learn persistence and optimism in our ability to change world around us. Working with our hands is important to our health. Including diy and crafts. Gardening does not let us to procrastinate, it allows us to be in the present and in the future. Positive feelings of continuity; healing and solace. It is known that people given a flower always give a genuine smile. Nature is easy on the mind but we can also feel pre-loss looking at nature knowing it's in a depleting state. The book is not too structured but every other sentence is pure, soothing gold. The book is not getting anywhere specific but provides concentric layers of thougut. #suestuartsmith #wellgardenedmind

Poet, Christine De Luca and I were so happy to welcome Sue Stuart-Smith @suestuartsmith author of "The Well-Gardened Mind" to Dr. Neil's Garden @drneilsgarden on a most glorious of Autumn mornings, last Friday. We talked of many things, sowing seeds for a collaboration. Sue agrees passionately with Voltaire’s conclusion to Candide: “Il faut cultiver notre jardin” – we must cultivate our gardens. For, as she says: “In this era of virtual worlds and fake facts, the garden brings us back to reality.” Our deep thanks to Sue, for coming a long way to visit the garden, so tenderly cared for by Claudia Pottier @pottierclaudia and an amazing group of wonderful volunteers who come together here every week, and to meet us all. Sue has also written that “beauty leaves a trace in the mind that somehow survives its passing” and we will carry with us traces of our conversation from this very special morning... #suestuartsmith #thewellgardenedmind #gardensandhealth #drneilsgarden #edinburghgardens #scotlandsgardens #gardensbringusbacktoreality #beautyleavesatrace

The second stop yesterday was at Serge Hill - home of @suestuartsmith and @tomstuartsmith . Sue had joined us and spoken last month for the Propagating Green Therapies Conference at Tuppenny Barn. Her knowledge and insight shone through her talk, and her book The Well Gardened Mind has been a springboard for so much of the Green Therapy movement in the UK and around the world. The Serge Hill Project is a not-for-profit CIC; an initiative that will work with schools and mental health charities to enable education and healing through connection with nature. A phenomenal indoor space - The Orchard Barn has been designed by Tom and Sue's Architect son Ben, using hempcrete, local clay unfired floor tiles, and local oak cladding. It will be used for workshops and group sessions, as well as eventually housing a teaching kitchen. Outside, there's a Plant Library - a mesmerising grid of 1500 different perennials - a living textbook testament to Tom's extraordinary planting palette. Behind the barn is a site to be used by @sunnysiderural where a new glasshouse will enable propagation of the Library's plants - a further bonus win because of the fabulous benefits Sunnyside brings to its trainees. And above, there are well-tended Veg beds, initially these were community beds used by local people in lockdown. They'll be used to feed the project and its objectives. Our fabulous guide was Aparna Stachowiack, the coordinator for the project. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and her journey to this job makes her the perfect fit for the role. I'd love to come back next year and see the project in action. @sergehillproject @studiobenjamin @okrastudio @tomstuartsmithstudio @gardens_by_aparna #sergehill #sergehillprojectforgardeningandhealth #suestuartsmith #thewellgardenedmind #tomstuartsmith #socialandtherapeutichorticulture #naturebasedtherapy #greentherapy #gardentherapy #horticulturaltherapy #sunnyside #mentalhealth #plantlibrary #herts #hertsandminds

SUE STUART-SMITH TULIPA ‘HELMAR’ Photographed at @suestuartsmith’s garden in Hertfordshire, 2022. Tulip is standing in one of Sue’s antique silver bud vases. ‘Tulips put on a performance like no other flower, and they die so elegantly too. We grow them in our raised beds in the vegetable garden at home, set out in straight lines: reds, yellows, purples and oranges – like a parade of glory that greets us as we stagger, sun-starved, out of winter.’ – Sue Stuart-Smith This time next week I will be installing my new show at @lyndsey_ingram. ‘As Chosen By.. Part II’ will open on November 15th and will run til December 22nd. #SueStuartSmith

Duncan and I are having our own quiet, autumn break. After a summer of celebration at our cabin in Red Lodge, this is a season of rest. I love the change… We back up to the national forest, and there is a quiet out here that I had never experienced…it has allowed me to hear the natural world’s rhythms of the day. So I have come out here with a few goals… The first is to dive into this book that my gifted landscape architect friend, John Wilson, brought me as a gift. I am convinced that the created world continues to heal. The second one is, and this is a lofty one, to learn morpholio trace in landscape architecture/design. And the third, which I have often called my favorite sport, is to cook, with time to enjoy the process. #hulseygardendesign #suestuartsmith #redlodgemontana #halfbakedharvest #newyorktimescooking

Greetings from the sunset a todos. . #suestuartsmith #jeanbaptistedelamo #benjaminlabatut #jacobobergareche #giorgioarmani

I'm two chapters into this wonderful book. It's very much in tune with my own thoughts about the relationship between gardening and wellbeing, and is also erudite and well-written. #wellgardenedmind #suestuartsmith #gardeninglife

Zachęca do uprawiania ogrodu👩‍🌾, sadzenia roślin, siania, pielenia i... grzebania w ziemi.🪱 Najlepiej gołymi rękoma.

TOM STUART-SMITH LOMELOSIA CRETICA Photographed at @tomstuartsmith and @suestuartsmith’s Plant Library during the construction of @sergehillproject, summer 2022. Campari bottle from Tom and Sue’s home. “This isn’t a plant you see much in the UK, but it’s a very beautiful, shrubby scabious from the Balearic Islands. We grow it in 15 centimetres of sand over the soil, and I think this lean and hungry situation suits it nicely. I collected some seed from a roadside in Ibiza about 10 years ago and grew it in the greenhouse. But now we have it outside, where it is much happier and more than half a metre across. It’s one of the most admired plants in our ‘plant library’ – in flower as well as seed.” – Tom Stuart-Smith Tom Stuart-Smith’s portraits are found in my book: PORTRAITS AS CHOSEN BY… Published by @ridinghousebooks and @lyndsey_ingram. Link in bio to buy. A limited edition issue of the book is available to purchase, which includes a 10x8” print of Tom’s Lomelosia cretica. There are only 12 of this limited edition available. I kept hearing about the plant library at The Serge Hill Project which has been put together by Tom and Sue Smith. So when I visited last week it was a sincere pleasure to fully understand the brilliantly simple concept: to view/smell/touch/experience plants in a natural growing habitat. It is a chance to learn about the ‘warts and all’ peculiarities of plants as they move through the seasons, perhaps giving us confidence to try something new. Some plants are selections donated by key plantsmen as well as Toms curation. I love the simple acknowledgement that we are always learning and sharing our ideas, and here is a new home to bring us together as a community and hopefully bump into each other and chat. I’m looking forward to supporting #sergehillprojectforgardeningandhealth #sergehillproject and becoming a member #tomstuartsmith #suestuartsmith

Here are some pictures of a very special trip (and discovery!) yesterday of The Serge Hill Project in Hertforshire! This beautiful garden of 1 acre created by Tom & @suestuartsmith team is home to an incredible library of plants, stunning views and has plans of offering future exciting programmes, that will support environmental education, help transform people's health and wellbeing, and foster community inclusion through gardening. At Growing Space, we fully support this initiative and encourage anyone that loves gardening or want to discover more about it to get in touch. Come and meet the author of The Well Gardened Mind on Thursday 28th, to discover the power of gardening to transform lives and ask your questions in person! Thanks @suestuartsmith for agreeing to come to us and to share your wisdom and knowledge with the public of Kensington & Chelsea. We are looking forward to welcome you @rbkclibraries in North Kensington on Thursday! #sustainableseptembercelebration #gardening #mentalhealth #suestuartsmith
