Edward Said’s book Orientalism which was published in 1978 had a profound influence on my body of work. As a young design student in London in the ‘80s leaving worn torn Beirut behind, I was very confused to what I was to become: yet another Western graphic designer or a pioneer in changing peoples perceptions about the Middle East… I chose the latter which was unknown and unheard of back then. I owe this choice to Said’s work in which he explores how the Western world has presented Middle Eastern culture and society in their academic study, art and literature- and I felt the need to explore this further by presenting a more accurate presentation of the Middle East through design. Forty years later, I was given the honor to give the next laureate at Takreem America in Boston to Najla Said @kittybubble , the daughter of Edward Said for her acting and activism. Her father and my mother, both Palestinian American, crossed paths at Harvard university in the late 50s where they were focusing on English literature and Middle Eastern studies. Takreem American @takreemamerica was established 3 years ago by @ricardo.karam.official who was determined to make @takreemorg a global platform awarding Arab individuals and organizations that have contributed to their communities. Maya brings not only her unparalleled vision but also a story of shared struggles and triumphs. Despite the distance, our paths crossed , finding a common ground—battling personal health challenges with the same team of doctors. It was in these moments of vulnerability that Maya’s strength and optimism shone the brightest. With a background in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from the American University of Beirut, coupled with an MA in Art and Politics at Goldsmiths University, Maya’s journey is a testament to the power of blending diverse disciplines. As the great granddaughter of Nazira Joumblatt and grand daughter of Linda Joumblatt, Maya continues a legacy of formidable women who have made significant cultural, societal and even political contributions. It was a great pleasure for me to visit the great Samira Tawfik at her residence in Abu Dhabi. This encounter, which had never happened before and faced several obstacles for various reasons, finally took place recently. It was filled with love, depth, and narratives of events that shaped the Arab scene. Samira Tawfik, one of the last giants of this era, witnessed a contemporary history written before her eyes in the Arabian Gulf. Therefore, she built a strong relationship with its people, who reciprocated her love, loyalty, appreciation, admiration, and respect for her singing and unique artistry. This first meeting must be revisited and repeated, albeit in a different way. It’s essential to capture stories from these rich years - some of which she shared with me - that will reweave the chapters of the Arabian Gulf’s renaissance. Stories of great figures Samira Tawfik lived among and experienced, tales from the ‘crystal’ vault of an era that will never be repeated, will provide the younger generations with sustenance for the days ahead. كانت سعادة كبيرة لي أن أقوم بزيارة السيدة سميرة توفيق في دارتها في أبو ظبي. هذا اللقاء لم يحصل من قبل وتعثّر عدة مرّات لأسباب مختلفة، لكنه تمّ مؤخراً وحمل في فصوله الكثير من الحب والعمق والسرد لوقائع وأحداث سطّرت المشهد العربي. فالست سميرة، إحدى آخر عمالقة هذا الزمن، كانت شاهدة على تاريخ معاصر كُتِبَ أمام أعينها في الخليج العربي لذا بنت مع أهله، الذين أسعدتهم بغنائها وفنّها الفريد، علاقة متينة حيث بادلوها الحب والوفاء والتقدير والإعجاب والاحترام. هذا اللقاء الأول لا بدّ أن يعود ويتكرّر ولو بشكلٍ مختلف، يجب أن يصطاد من هذه السنوات الزاخرة قصصاً - شاركتني البعض منها-ستعيد نسج فصول نهضة الخليج العربي وروايات لكبار عايشتهم الست سميرة وعاشت بينهم، روايات من الخزنة "البلورية" لزمن لن يتكرّر ستمنح الأجيال الشابة "زوادة" للأيام القادمة. #ricardokaram #samiratawfik #instapic #legend #respect #سميرة_توفبق #ريكاردو_كرم

In a region where the freedom of the press is limited and where information is often controlled by the state, access to trusted and quality journalism has never been more important. Journalism awards play a vital role in offering recognition to journalists. They can cement the credibility that journalists need when they raise their voice against violence, oppression or corruption. Samir Kassir was an advocate of democracy who was assassinated in 2005. His wife Gisele and his friends created an Award for Freedom of Press that carries his name. The 18th edition of Samir Kassir Award, with the support of the @euinlebanon , was held this evening at Sursock Palace Gardens. Listening to the nominees was proof that the journalistic scene is still full of true talents. These young men and women, who hail from Egypt, Syria, Tunisia and Lebanon, have reconfirmed that there is still hope. Tonight's event reminded everybody that Lebanon was, is and will always remain the lap of freedoms for bright minds who believe in the values of justice, openness and modernity. I was very happy to have been in Beirut to witness the reopening of Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock Museum thanks to a lengthy reconstruction and funding from various international organizations. The Lebanese capital’s oldest independent cultural establishment was wrecked after several thousand tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the Beirut Port on August 4, 2020. Parts of the early-20th-century townhouse were completely destroyed, artworks were damaged, and the the center of Beirut’s cultural scene in the 1960s was forced to close. This picture was taken this evening with Karina Helou, the museum’s director who has done an amazing job, and Annie Vartivarian. Annie lost her daughter Gaïa Fodoulian in the catastrophic explosion; she was 29 years old. “I am a Palestinian born in Jerusalem. I was uprooted from my homeland, Palestine, and denied the right to return. I took refuge in Egypt, then lived in Lebanon, where I completed my studies, to return and make my life in Jordan. These Arab countries are close to me, but the pain of diaspora Nostalgia for what we have lost, and a sense of responsibility to preserve our memories always accompanies me. This is what I tried to express in my art, and through the establishment of Darat al Funun," Suha Shoman. Suha Shoman founded Darat al Funun to be a meeting place and a large laboratory for local, Arab and international creators, and she faced many challenges, but with the effort of an elite group of architects she revived four old houses dating back to the twenties and thirties of the last century, houses that were built by Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese, so she captured the spirit of architecture in the Levant. If this project did not see the light, those landmarks would have been destroyed or buildings and commercial complexes would have been built in their place. On every trip to Amman, even if it is for one day, I visit Darat al Funun in a sacred ritual. And here is Suha, who hates limelight, and from whom we stole this picture in her wonderful space, and with us are Amal Jabre, Luma Hamdan, and the spirit of Khaled Shoman everywhere. I have met Viviane Robert Ghanem in 1992 when she launched her book with Asma Freiha, "The Lebanese and Life in Lebanon: 1943-1975". This two-volume book, which commemorates the beautiful years of a "unique" country, reconciled me with the Lebanon that I had only known and experienced through successive wars. Nothing predestined this encounter to open the door to a friendship that would transcend all generations of the family. They have all appeared on my TV shows. When Viviane asked me to write the preface to her new book, "Happiness... My Motto," I was very touched and honored. I was convinced that she knew I somehow understood the main lines of this exciting life that she lived and that she contributed to making unique. Viviane is a free spirit who has a talent for life. It is a rare asset that bears no mortgage. Proud of the rich, open Lebanese culture, she shares her recipes for a well-lived life alongside an “out of the ordinary” family, her “companion of happiness,” her “soulmates,” and her remarkable children. The magic of this book lies in the description of the multiple facets of Lebanese society, where one meets intellectuals, artists, journalists, politicians, entrepreneurs, bohemian bourgeois before their time, and poets of an unpublished genre. Freedom of expression and dialogue were seen as an opportunity rather than a threat. Over the pages, I traveled through Kantari, Mousseitbe, Verdun, Chtaura, and Baalbeck with a different eye. I relived the summers in Dhour Choueir, traveled the world, saw Ibrahim again, the butler of the Haddad family whom I knew, he who had institutionalized with the four girls and their brothers a double fast: that of Ramadan and Lent. I walked the streets, squares, and cafes of this bygone world. This book is not to be missed! Dalida's private life was marred by a series of failed relationships and personal problems. On the night of 2–3 May 1987, she committed suicide by overdosing on barbiturates. She left behind a note which read, "La vie m'est insupportable. Pardonnez-moi" (Life is unbearable for me. Forgive me). Sami Khayat was not only a Lebanese francophone theater comic actor, director and writer or a pioneer of comic theater in Lebanon; he was mainly a patriot in love with his homeland which knew all the scourges of the world and lived through tragedies that have not ended to this day. Sami conveyed our reality, criticizing the small details with wit, ingenuity, and outstanding talent. A disciple of Yvette Sursock, he entered people’s hearts through Francophone Channel 9 and the famous weekly show “Yvette reçoit”. He formed a duet with his wife Naila both in life and on stage, Naila with her guitar and beautiful voice, and he, through the abundance of authorship where he signed 55 theatrical works. Sami’s heart stopped after he was living in his last years, the bitterness of grief over a world to which he gave his life when he mostly got ingratitude and lack of loyalty in return. The pets he loved, fed and cuddled became orphans. We will miss you Sami. I visited Sudan once to run a seminar at the invitation of the World Food Organization (FAO) and during this visit I discovered the diverse aspects of the rich city of Khartoum and its friendly and loving people. However, when talking about Sudan, I keep seeing in my eyes an exceptional woman, an unrepeatable fighter, a powerful Sudanese voice and a remarkable social advocate I am proud to call “ my friend”: Magda El-Sanousi. Magda dedicated her Life for the development of programs and the mobilization of resources that empower women. Her work focused on promoting gender-sensitive budgets and policies in Yemen, empowering women in remote villages in Egypt to vote, and even to stand as candidates in the parliamentary elections. My dear Magda, I know how tough are the days you’re going through. Please stay safe and strong as you've always been. The assimilation of Armenian children orphaned during World War I was an integral part of the implementation of the Armenian Genocide. Djemal Pasha, the commander of the Ottoman army and one of those responsible for the Armenian genocide, seized the college of Antoura (in Lebanon) and drove out the Lazarist fathers to welcome 1,000 Armenian and 400 Kurdish children there in order to Turkify them. To achieve his objective, he entrusted Halidé Edip with the execution of this mission. For three years, these children suffered severe and inhuman punishments. The objective was to transform the children into Turks by changing their Armenian names, forcing them to speak Turkish, and erasing their history. Starving and poorly cared for, 300 of them died and were buried in the Antoura orphanage. I have pursued my schooling years in St Joseph College of Antoura, and it is only recently that I found out about that cruel and sad chapter. This story is a testimony that young children, who recognize injustice, can lobby against it and can form a sense of identity that they will fight to maintain. 108 years after, we remember the victims of the Armenian genocide, we pray for their souls, and justice we claim still. For over 50 years, the Lebanese have been on a date with the voice of the legendary Fayrouz who revives every year on Good Friday. On that day, believers used to flock early to the church so that they lock a seat from which they could see the lady they love and did not abandon them throughout the years of war. They wait for a long time outside, filling the streets leading to the church, and as soon as the doors were opened, stampede arise to get a seat. However, as soon as Fayrouz appears, the scene changes, and silence, reverence, and prayers prevail, and the crowd turns into listening, with humbled ears, praising the Lord. Everyone wants to monopolize the turquoise voice. Those who do not find places for themselves, squat on the floor and pray in an act of unity with Fayrouz. Today is Good Friday for the communities following the eastern calendar. Asmahan was born on a boat in the middle of a stormy sea, and she died at the age of 27 drowned. During her eventful birth, the boat threatened to sink and it was believed that she was going to perish with the passengers on board. To exorcise the danger, her mother called her Amal, which means hope in Arabic. Indeed, a lucky star was watching over her. She was not only saved, but became one of the greatest Arab legends. Asmahan gave birth to a daughter named Camelia. Asmahan died on the seventh birthday of her daughter. Camelia lived in Lebanon. At sixteen she married Riad Joumblatt and together, they had four children, among whom the stunning Soha. This is Soha's daughter, Yasmina Joumblatt, who lives in Switzerland with her husband and two daughters. Yasmina learned opera singing out of passion and simple pleasure. She never dreamed of being a singer. It took her time to sing in public. I had tea with Yasmina this afternoon in Paris. She is cooking big projects to be announced soon. Three times I founded an office, and three times it got destructed: in 2005, 2012 and 2020, let’s say with every one of the big explosions that Beirut has known during the last two decades. Did I blame some supernatural power, did I blame fate, did I switch my anger towards my country? No, because I know this is the most beautiful country in the world. While I am saddened by the deserting mind that many of our talents have adopted while leaving the country, I thought it is my duty to reinforce the concept of life in a country where living is hard and where institutions no longer exist, I thought it is my duty to always go for reconstruction. I love this country.
