✨ hip release with lizard pose✨ Lizard is one of my favorite ways to get into the hips. A nice deep hip flexor stretch and a little rotation through the low back. Excellent if your sitting a lot or doing a lot of quad heavy sports- running, biking, walking. This posture works the hips in both positions. The leg behind targets the hip flexors for opening while the front leg rolls into external rotation and stretching the adductors and releasing the pelvic floor and low back. A helpful pose to balance out the chronic hip flexor shorting that comes with sitting. The position of the legs helps to work on extension and external rotation - important and often neglected ranges of motion in our day to day. The amount of tilt will vary from person to person. ⭐ Pec myofascial release ⭐ If you find yourself sitting a lot, especially slouching, your pecs are likely short and tight. So this one's for my fellow desk workers, drivers, and mums who are breastfeeding. This practice can be a bit spicy but thankfully it only takes the tube up balls, time and maybe a yoga block or book. If working on the floor is too much pressure you can moderate depth better by standing and leaning into a wall. ✨ keep it simple ✨ Here we have the shoulders at 90° abduction and alternating between 30 seconds of static hold and 30 seconds of small 2 inch pulses under the tension of the resistance band. It seems simple. Infact, the point is for the movement to be simple. Despite its simplicity the effort is definitely present. You'll notice in this pic I'm determined to keep smiling through the burn 😅 while I try to talk and make it seem effortless. That's the joy of resistance bands. They can improve proprioception (feedback) which improves awareness of specific muscles and movements. They can help add a slight amount of load to improve muscle function and training. 💆‍♀️ Massage Therapist 💆‍♀️ Many of you know I first came to doing massage professionally in 2007. Since then I have racked up hundreds of hours in continuing education - including moving to Ontario and re-training to become a registered massage therapist. I've blended my love of anatomy and movement to both my teaching and RMT practices. I believe in the mental and physical health benefits of massage and therapeutic touch. It can be used as a stress manage tool - as massage is proven to help support the circulatory system (lowering blood pressure), reduce stress horemones, and support immune function while supporting a relaxation response. Massage therapy can also help manage acute and chronic injuries reducing compensatory muscle patterns and pain. Massage can also be a helpful support during transitional times like in pre and post natal stages of life, recovering from surgery or for sports impact management. ✨ Reclined shoulder opener ✨ This is a nice pose to help support along the spine and open the chest to counteract postural strain and resulting rounded shoulders. This posture helps to open the front of the body specifically the shoulders, mid back and chest. It can help to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. How to- 📍Use two blocks with the further away at a taller height to provide an angled support for a bolster 📍Lay a bolster along the blocks with one end coming to the back of the pelvis at the floor. As you lay down the full spine should be supported. 📍 Arms come to your side palms up to open the chest 📍 Place a second bolster or a towel roll under the knees 📍 Rest for 10-15 minutes in this shape, breathe deeply 📍 Repeat often It can feel vulnerable or have the front of the body so opened. This is especially true for those who sit alot with forward rounding posture or those going through an emotionally challenging period as the emotions often shows up in our physical body. There are always options to modify: 👉 change the height of your blocks to adapt the angle of recline. 👉You can also change arm position - bringing hands to belly or under hips with palms down will reduce the amount of openness through the chest. ✨ Supported bound angle & chest opener✨ A go to pose to help balance the postural strain of sitting all day. The soft bolster (or you can use a rolled towel) under the scapulas through the mid back to help to gently open the chest. Arms open to the side body with palms to the sky brings external rotation into the shoulders to combat rounded shoulders. For the legs bring the soles of the feet together and let the knees fall open. Remember the goal here is not to stretch but to rest with ease. As such it can be helpful to have support under the knees (pictured here are blocks but you can also use pillows or towel rolls) to allow the work and weight of the legs to soften. ✨ Tight hips? ✨ If you find yourself sitting or driving a lot chances are your hip flexors are tight. Hip tension can result in reduced mobility in the hips and low back. It often shows up as pain or stiffness when trying to stand or bend. This series of muscles sit at the front of your pelvis and upper thigh and are responsible for hip flexion. Try these stretches for 30 - 45 seconds a side within your stretch tollerance 👇 📍 Lizard lunge - a low lunge with your back knee down on the ground. Squeeze your glutes to activate and deepen the hip flexor stretch. Your front leg can open to the side and you may gently press it open (pic 1) or bring hands or elbows to the ground inside your front leg (pic 2). 📍Low lunge - bring one leg infront keeping your knee over your ankle. The other leg reaches behind you with the knee on the ground. Squeeze your glutes to activate and deepen the hip flexor stretch. Hands can rest on your leg (pic 3). 📍 High lunge/Runners lunge - bring one leg infront keeping your knee over your ankle. The other leg reaches behind you with the knee and heel off the ground. Reclaiming a more neutral, less “collapsed” posture is a goal that we gradually work towards, not something we just snap into. Waking up with neck/back pain is common. I see these cases daily. Patients always want to know - why? What causes this pain? Sleeping posture is a major factor in spinal health. I frequently remind patients not to sleep on their stomach for the following reasons: 1- Unless you’ve somehow figured out how to breathe through your pillow, you need to turn your head to the side when you sleep on your stomach. That puts your head and spine out of alignment, twisting your neck. You might not notice the damage this causes after one episode of stomach sleeping, but over time neck problems can develop. 2-The neck problem you really don’t want is a herniated disk. That’s when there’s a rupture of the gelatinous disk between your vertebrae. When this gel bulges out from the disk, it can irritate the nerves. Sleeping on your stomach places a strain on your back and spine. This is because most of your weight is in the middle of your body. This makes it difficult to maintain a neutral spine position when you’re sleeping. Mid-back and neck pain/stiffness is an all too common occurrence these days as many of us work from home, using less-than-ideal workstations. This exercise is a modification of the "childs pose" in yoga. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 1) Get down to the floor, bring your feet close but keep your knees wide. Bring your butt right down towards your heels. Reach up straight with your arms. 2) Take a deep breath in. 3) Then, as you slowly exhale, reach further up the floor with your hands, as you focus on flattening out your mid-back by pushing the centre of your mid-back towards the floor. Try and lengthen out your whole spine as you do this, eliminating any curvatures. 4)Take another deep breath. Repeat for 10 breaths. That's it! Some relief from a stiff and sore neck and upper back can be attained with something as simple as this exercise! This is a great way to break up your work day! 📌TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER (TMD)📌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TMD is a general term used to describe pain within the jaw joint & the muscles that control jaw movement. Sources of pain may include: 1️⃣ A subluxing disc 2️⃣ Joint capsular stiffness 3️⃣ Muscular imbalances 4️⃣ Neuromuscular deficiencies (habitual issues with controlling movement) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Causes of joint dysfunction include: ✅ Trauma ✅ Posture related ✅ Dental related ✅ Arthritis ✅ Habitual causes (overuse of the jaw, always chewing on one side, clenching & grinding - bruxism) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TMD may or may not present with pain, however, often there is associated clicking, or locking of the jaw, and a limitation in jaw movement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although the clinical exam involves a much more detailed assessment of the jaw & surrounding areas, Here are four simple things to make jaw pain feel better! Movement medicine - spinal ranges. 🎥 X5 speed. Cat & cow- Begin on hands and knees and move with the breath. Inhale to feel the back body round and fill, exhale to draw the front of the body open and towards the floor. Move slowly with your breath for about a minute. Thoracic twists- Inhale to reach behind you opening the chest to the side, exhale to reach across your body as you bow towards the floor. Wow. Stuck at a desk all day? This post from @dr.caleb.burgess is packed with great options on how to counteract the issues that creates. What better way to start off your week then with some nice relaxing neck stretches, before the stress and tension even begins! These 3 simple movements courtesy of @laurasophiechiro will also help offset the tightness associated with postural strain from sitting at a desk for prolonged periods. 🧑🏻‍💻 As an added bonus, taking a few moments in your day to focus on selfcare includes the added benefit of mindfulness. Something I’ve come to learn and appreciate from practicing yoga. Enjoy! 🧘🏼‍♀️ ✨3 STRETCHES TO COMBAT NECK PAIN AND STIFFNESS✨ - 1.Levator scapulae and upper trapezius muscle stretch - Bend your neck forwards, and then side-bend your neck by taking your ear towards your shoulder. Hold on to a chair or sit on your free hand to make the stretch stronger. This will allow you to feel a stretch at the back and side of your neck. Then turn your head to face the floor on the opposite side to the stretch to target the Levator scapulae fibres. 2.Suboccipital muscle stretch - Sit down with good posture, tuck your chin down slightly, and hold your fingers under your skull. Try to elongate your neck and pull your skull upwards with your fingers. You should feel a gentle stretch at the top of your neck under your fingers. Stop immediately if you get any dizziness. Hold the stretch, and relax. - 3. SCM muscle stretch - Hook your fingers above your collar bone, and gently side-bend your neck to the opposite side. Hold the stretch. You can make the stretch stronger by extending your neck. You should feel the stretch at the front/side of your neck. This exercise will help improve mobility to your neck. - Try them all and see which ones work best for you. Working out the kinks of virtual learning 👩🏽‍💻 Virtual learning has been taking a toll on many kids physically. The new home school set ups may take some time to get used to. Aches and pains can happen along the way. But, when do you know if it’s just your child’s body getting adjusted to the new work space or actual strain on their body?? Here’s a couple things to look out for: Does your child complain about 🙁Back pain 🙁Neck pain 🙁Shoulder pain 🙁Wrist pain 🙁Headaches 🙁Migraines Are their symptoms becoming worse in frequency, intensity or duration? Are they persisting beyond a few days? Are their aches and pains interfering with their online learning, daily activities or sleep? Back pain or other pains are not normal in children. If your kids are complaining about new or worsening symptoms have them checked out sooner than later.
