Did the Vikings sacrifice humans? This is extremely difficult to answer as we lack sources. However, there are some later accounts The German bishop Thietmar of Merseburg (975-1018) tells how the Vikings met every ninth year in Lejre (area in Denmark) "...and sacrificed to their gods 99 people and as many horses, dogs and roosters or hawks, for these to serve them in the realm of the dead. The German historian Adam of Bremen has written a similar account from 1072 about sacrifices in the Swedish Uppsala. Here, the Vikings allegedly also met every nine years to secure the favor of the gods. According to Adam of Bremen hung there 9 dogs, 9 horses and 9 people between each other and dangling from the treetop - all male The number 9 apparently had a magical meaning for the Vikings, as it appears again in several rituals. It should be noted, however, that neither Thietmar nor Adam were eyewitnesses to the cult actions. They wrote the stories, when people had converted to Christianity. Yesterday was a truly special evening! After all the, very positive, feedbacks of my friends and fanzines, I finally got to see Heilung live. They didn't only live up to my expectations, they surpassed them! A totally unique performance where they perfectly displayed their enchanting songs. I got home from London for this weekend and @audhild_zimmer had some surprises in store for me. Yesterday we went on a custom built tour of the hill of Tara with the amazing Treasa Ni Mhurchu. This lady's knowledge is immense, both in terms of the archeology and the spiritual aspects of this beautiful place. We were lucky to spend the day surrounded by a fantastic group of our viking friends. The evening ended with a beautiful ritual in the full moon organised by both Tom and Treasa. The vows were traditionally made while laying hands on the bristles of the sonargǫltr, the boar sacrificed at the Blót on the evening of Jól Eve. The association with the sacrificial boar and the ritual toast gave the vows the force of an oath. However, due to the ritual process, they usually came after the speaker was drunk. The vows were solemn and there were punishments for breaking them, but they were not always important. The Old Norse people had a unique set of celebration and festivals. Some have inspired or influenced many holidays and traditions we have today. The original Norse Heathen main celebrations from historical texts are: Yule, Disting, Sigurblot and Winter Nights. These events were based on the moon and/or sun phases depending on the area of Northern Europe. The Norse Pagan Wheel of the Year is a newer set of celebrations based on the old traditions and modelled after the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. The new model was created in the 70s to help keep up with the changing times. The events on the historical (pre-Christian) calendar are hard to date on modern calendars because they follow the phases of the moon. This is called a 'lunar calendar'. From medieval poems, we can determine when the Heathen holidays took place. They are: - Vetrnaetr (Winter Nights): The first full moon of October/November (harvest moon) - Álfblót (Elf Ritual): Sometime in November - Jól (Yule): The first full moon of mid-January/mid-February - Disting (Disir Ritual): The full moon of March -Sígrblót (Victory Ritual): The full moon around Mid-April This colouring page is available to download and print for free on pagankids.org, as well as the new age Wheel of the Year. Spirit animals . When working with magic and rituals in any form, spirit animals usually are present. The connection with your personal spirit animals is deep, unique and precious. Spirit animals are your friends, protectors and sometimes they act as guides when you are performing rituals or trance journeying. The spirit animals that are with you are unique to you, and usually they are linked with certain aspects of your personality. Most people have one or two livelong spirit animals, and then there are the spirit animals that only appear when you are working in a specific field, or during a certain period of your life. The appearance of a spirit animal may be very surprising. But in some occasions they have always been known to you, since you were a child . Initiating contact with a spirit animal: . Getting in touch with your spirit animal does not involve extravagant rituals. It is in fact very simple. I have a short ritual to share with you to initiate this contact or to strengthen the bond you already have. It goes like this.. 1. Take a small bowl and fill it with fresh water. 2. Choose a spot in your house to place the bowl of water. It is important to choose a spot indoors, as you want to invite the spirit animal into your personal space. 3. Look at the water, place your hand over your heart and close your eyes. 4. Speak from your heart. Just a short 'my name is... and I would like to know who you are my spirit animal'. Is enough. Don't ask for things or tasks to be completed. Spirit animals are your friends, not slaves or forces of energy you can manipulate. 5. Replace the water in the bowl with fresh water each day and repeat your words. 6. Pay attention to your dreams and your surroundings. With Christmas fast approaching, it can be all too easy to get swept away in the festive frenzy of need and expectation, and to lose sight of the true reason for the season. For me, the real magic happens during the Winter Solstice, which falls on December 21st. The Winter Solstice, also known as the norse pagan festival of Yule, marks the mid-point of winter and brings the promise of new beginnings as we move out of the darkness and into increasingly lighter, warmer days. It signals the LIGHT of the returning sun after the longest night, and also a recognition of the LIGHT within others and ourselves. Winter is the season of stillness and rest, during which time plants and animals slow down to conserve energy. Whilst the outer world appears still, deep within the earth much activity is brewing, with seeds gestating ready to give birth in Spring. Likewise, we can use this time to withdraw and go within, to delve deep into own inner worlds, to name our dreams and give birth to our visions. In the stillness of introspection, we can reflect on the past year before beginning anew in the next. In taking stock of our lives (without judgement) we identify what we need to cast off and what we hope to achieve in the coming year. As we release the dead wood in our lives, we make space for new opportunities to flow in and help us to move forward in the direction of our dreams. It is also a time to celebrate our accomplishments, and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. . . . Almost a highseat The highseat was the center of many norse ceremonies, so it should be more decorated than my doodle allowed. Its posts were dug into the ground (possibly) and "Thor nails" could have been hammered into them. At some inauguration ceremonies the person to be inaugurated sat at the base of the highseat, though I've seen no description of a footstool or such (stone slabs shows up under other circumstances though).
