Happy Mother’s Day! I am celebrating Mother Earth today by painting Mother Nature’s treasures. My fern is growing and unfurling when I need the fiddleheads, my phloxes are wilting, the prairie trilliums are winking at me…. A Question Mark butterfly needs to set its position… I have no time to take a break 😁😁😁🙃🙃🙃😳😳😳, but that’s me in a happy place. Blessings to you all, my Insta friends and followers! Things in this painting in progress - Woodland Blue Phlox - Prairie Trilliums, Trillium recurvatum. Not really growing in prairies, though…. They grow in woodland edges. A not so rightful common name, I guess. - Question Mark butterfly. You will see a cute question mark once this painting is finished. There will be many leaves to paint, as each trillium flower has three big leaves 🥹🥹🥹🥹🙃🙃🙃. It will be fun, right?!?!?!?! 😳 #botanicalartist #floraandfauna #watercolorbotanicals #naturalhistoryart #botanicalillustration #botanicalart #ecobotanical #ecobotanicals #coex #coexist #sustainability #nativeolants #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #woodland #springephemeral #wildflower #watercolor #mothersday #heeyoungkim

Posted @withregram • @saunter.nature Sand Cherry (Prunus pumila) After feeling the strengthening sun this weekend, I figured I’d pull a small but cheery taste of the seasons to come to post. Sand cherry, Prunus pumila, is small deciduous shrub native to Ontario. It tends to grow in sandy places across the province - ridges, dunes and beaches. Its stems often have a reddish tinge. The leathery leaves of sand cherry are about 2” long (give or take) and widest near the tip, with finely serrated edges. As with all Prunus species, it is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae), a hint of which is its 5-petalled flowers. A favourite of wildlife, its blossoms are often abuzz with pollinators (bees and flies), and its fruits enjoyed by many different species of birds. 🍃 the weaving journey is with me always, this is one of many connections to native plants through bushtukka, to eat the base of the lomandra - Cumbungi- River Reed stems to sustain energy while then splitting for drying and to the process like my ancestors before me I traditional ways with honouring the time, the journey and to continue to make and then gift or trade 🍃👣 I have had a lovely time making connections with like minded people for our bushtukka brings us together in so many ways, through food, cooking, weaving, medicine, growing, harvesting, there is so much that these native plants are used for and I like to explore the full circle when it comes to native plants 🍃 a big part of my journey revolves around being at one with country and advocating for climate change action and awareness in environmental sustainability for a better future! 🍃👣 #bushtuckerwoman #bushtuckerwomanandherbudgie #nativeolants #idomeyoudoyou #medicinewoman #weaver #weaving #maker #gift #culture #inspire

very pretty in the woodsy dappled sun, red-berried elder is in peak show-off mode! it’s all about timing - and a race with the vireos - but personally i’ve never seen so many shrubs full of fruit at once. more commonly i see twiggy half-eaten clusters of berries here and there. i find the later-fruiting common elderberry in greater abundance, especially at the wetlands. those berries are blue-black.

Behind the scenes! I am sorting photos for an exciting edibles project. Thanks to my hand model (Jacqui) and to Diwali (swipe), one of the loves of my life never wanting to be left out! This is a close up of the very pretty and equally tasty Syygium fibrosum. This tasty Lilly Pilly is not so common in the wild, found in wet areas of river edges and rocky escarpments. I have not found a language name for it Nd it doesn’t really have an English name, let’s call it little pink Lilly pilly. It has become a common street tree, fruiting in late dry season. I have tried many recipes with it and like many fruits is high in VItamin C. #nativeolants #botanicallove #foragedfruittropicalfruit #northernAustralia

Our deserts are becoming more susceptible to fires because we destroy the native plant species and introduce harmful nonnative one that are more susceptible to fires. These fires can destroy habitats and alter the way animals live. Lets make a change and keep native plants in our desert. How do we do that lets stag out of the desert and keep our seeds we import in our own garden. #locallygrown #nativeolants # no fires https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/88807/a-desert-landscape-scarred-by-fire

Andromedea rockets up through the pine needles. Swipe to see its lifecycle and those tiny winged seeds under the microscope. These plants don’t have chlorophyll or photosynthesize, instead they borrow nutrients from a mycorrhizal mushroom that links them to nearby pine trees. People say these plants are parasites. I wouldn’t call them that - I think they just have a complicated arrangement. . . . #mycoheterotroph #symbiont #mycosymbiotics #pinedrops #pterosporaandromedea #wilderness #nativeplants #wildflowers #biodiversity #nativeolants #flowers #nonphotosynthetic #rareplants #mycobiont #mycology #mycologysociety #mycologyclub #outdoors #microscopy #forestmagic #deepecology #gaia #planetearth

According to The Washington Post, the tree is a "nightmare," "an environmental time bomb," and "an ecological marauder destined to continue its spread for decades." The New York Times simply calls it, "the most despised tree." Why is this tree so despised? To understand why these trees are a problem, you have to understand where they came from. The Bradford Pear Tree originated in China and were introduced in 1964 by the US Department of Agriculture as an ornamental tree. This flowering tree was assumed to be sterile (spoiler alert- it isn’t!) and was known for its weak branch structure. They have a lifespan of only 20-30 years, as anyone who has seen these trees in an ice or wind storm can attest. It turns out, they aren’t sterile as it was assumed. Sure, they don’t pollinate among themselves, but these promiscuous and stinky little trees like to pollinate with EVERYTHING else out there. And, to make matters worse, their offspring has reverted to the ancient Chinese Callery pears which form impenetrable thorny thickets that choke the life out of pines, dogwoods, maples, redbuds, oaks, hickories, etc. When you see those fields of white flowering trees. what you are looking at are Callery pears destroying nature. If you happen to be growing a Bradford pear in your yard, the very best thing you can do is cut it down promptly and replace it with a native species. Call us for an estimate to remove and plant a beneficial native in its place. www.connellylawn.com #bradfordpears #callerypears #stinkytrees #trees #planttrees #plantmoretrees #nativetrees #gardendesign #gardens #nativeolants #invasivespecies #gardeningtips #berkscounty #landscaper #bob18
