So I watched the movie My Fault and as good as it is the book is definitely 100× better than the movie. 🤷🏼♀️ Don't get me wrong, Nick... yes, Nick is a piece of eye candy to watch (despite the fact he's 22 in the book and 23 in real life), but my god, he's so handsome. Even better in a suit... something about a man in a suit. 😍 (Also badboy) 🥵😅 Anyways, there is definitely chemistry between both Noah and Nick, but I just feel so much is left out, and I know there's only so much you can put into a movie, but still. I felt loads of things happen in the book, and you're waiting for that part, and it doesn't come. 🎥 Movies of 2024 🍿 #23 - Back to Black Enjoyed some of the insights, thought Marisa Abela and Jack O’Connell were great. The pacing of the movie was off in my opinion; slow at the very beginning, rapid acceleration, then slow again. There was something missing that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I also sort of felt like I was prying at some points, though arguably cutting those scenes would not have made it a better movie. O filme do momento... só se fala bem do filme por aí. Ora se as minhas expectativas estavam no auge, ainda fiquei mais empolgada para o ver. E quando a fasquia das expectativas está lá no alto, o que pode acontecer? Surgir a desilusão, certo? Não com este The Fall Guy! No no no, o Ryan Gosling NUNCA desilude. Aliás, a cada filme que faz se torna num favorito desse ano. Aconteceu com La La Land, aconteceu com Barbie e aconteceu agora... provavelmente aconteceu mais vezes (desde o Notebook que sigo a carreira dele!!!!). Uma romcom de acção, talvez tenha inventado agora o género, mas é o que este filme é na realidade. Uma comédia romântica que nos arranca umas boas gargalhadas e que nos consegue tirar o fôlego em cenas frenéticas, todas elas muito muito bem feitas. O recorde de voltas de um carro em despiste foi quebrado numa dessas cenas e sim, com um duplo no seu interior. Este filme é uma honrosa homenagem a todos os duplos (stunts) que nunca recebem os devidos créditos, mas são eles que se colocam em perigo para os actores (que nós efectivamente conhecemos) se saírem bem na fotografia. Eles dizem que não precisam da estatueta de ouro, mas eu digo que a merecem tanto quanto os actores principais e secundários! A fotografia do filme está brutal, as cenas de acção estão tão bem feitas que conseguiremos relevar que são demasiados arrojadas e até a mensagem de que a realização de Metalstorm pode inspirar mais mulheres a aspirarem ser realizadoras, foi muito bem encaixada. 45.366 Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil (2024) [Only in Theatres] Sometimes I just don't get why Malayalee audiences are their own biggest enemies. It is very difficult to please a Malayalee. Given the number of good movies that we have got this year, the standard has gone up so much so that movies like Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil are getting tagged overrated and intolerable. For me, I am enjoying the Malayalam films this year, even the so-called mediocre ones (including Malayalee from India). "Vinu has finally agreed to get married after a bad breakup. His soon to be brother-in-law, Anand has become his best friend. When Vinu volunteers to solve Anand's marital issues, his own marriage enters a state of flux." Prior to release, director @vipindashb (Antakshari, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey) did mention that he doesn't like tackling the same genre again. Thus, the stark difference between his dark Antakshari and his latest. Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil is different from his previous film as well given how the movie doesn't take itself seriously. He isn't trying to deliver any message with this one. The performances are brilliant with every character getting their due. @ibasiljoseph & @therealprithvi 's chemistry is the highlight of the movie & I loved their comic timing. The second half gives out Priyadarshan vibes given the amount of confusion going around and thus, the side characters take centre stage as we head towards a very chaotic climax that is staged at a custom built Guruvayoor set with @ajuvarghese crooning for effect. Yes, I agree @nikhilavimalofficial 's character gets the short end of the stick and that may stay with the viewers well after the movie. The makers could have done away with certain elements to give her a better arc. So I just finished watching the newest installment in the Mad Max franchise. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Miller, 2024) and it was a wild ride experience especially in IMAX. The performances were great, Chris Hemsworth steals the show, the cinematography was very good, I like the film's revenge tale, some adrenaline action sequences, and the music was done great once again by Tom Holkenborg a.k.a Junkie XL. Now is it better than Fury Road, I would say "no." Because Fury Road was a different beast compared to the other Mad Max movie we gotten. It felt more real and grit how Fury Road looked. Furiosa does use a lot of CGI, and often times they're a bit off sometimes. Plus, pacing was slow in some scenes that dragged the film. But despite some flaws that this movie has, it's still a good companion to Fury Road. Honestly, after watching Furiosa, I want to go back and see Fury Road. Overall, I still recommend Furiosa, it's definitely one of the better installment in the series. Though the core of his movies are centred around family, this one is more palatable for a family audience. Bea loses her mother to cancer when she was little and now, as a teen, she has to deal with her father's medical ailment. While she staying with her grandmother, she comes across imaginary friends, who are looked after by a man called Calvin. She volunteers to find the IFs, new homes My biggest takeaway from the movie was that @vancityreynolds managed to steer clear of his usually cocky self. He is more mellow as his character should be. I am grateful to Krasinski for that. Cailey Fleming (The Walking Dead) does well as the titular character, who doesn't find happiness in anything after she loses her mother. Krasinski's choice for the voice cast is brilliant. From @stevecarrelll to @emilybluntofflcial to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper and many many more. I loved the nod to Deadpool 2 (watch out for it). IF is a beautifully weaven story of how life catches up with you when you become older. There are so many things that bog you down; like your job, peer pressure, age, self-confidence and in the process we forget about the smaller things in life, the things that made us happy: like our hobbies, our passion that we lost along the way. I loved how Krasinski has packaged all this in kid's movie that is too mature for it's audience. But for a few years prior to 2022, he hit a slump with some really pathetic movies. Since 2022 though, he has been back to his best barring one remake he did. I particularly loved him in Monica, O My Darling, the very mature Badhaai Do and now, Srikanth. Srikanth is story of Srikanth Bholla, a industrialist, who is visually impaired. Srikanth's life wasn't easy as he struggled to fit in in a world that wasn't ready to accept someone who was blind to be brilliant as well. With the Indian education system standing in his way, he decides to graduate from MIT and then return to start Bollant Industries, as a way of giving back to those who face the same impairment as him. @rajkummar_rao 's dedication to any role especially this one is phenomenal. He is one the few in our country, who would actually get into the depth of playing a character that is blind. And that is visible onscreen. Rao owns this role and for that alone this movie is worthy the price of admission. His co-stars Jyothika, @sharadkelkar , @alayaf & @jameel.mumbai as APJ Abdul Kalam impress. Srikanth may be too fast-paced for its own good but that doesn't mean it doesn't have the intended impact. And I believe that if a movie moves you and makes your eyes moist, then they have got something right. Srikanth is one such film that is all heart and I enjoyed every bit of it. The Papa Kehte Hain track is placed in the most apt places and that had me jumping with joy. Srikanth isn't all goody goody as there are sides to Srikanth (the character) that are explored in this film that I did not expect. All in all, Rajkummar Rao hits it out of the park with his latest. At the beginning it promised to be something slightly more, but ultimately reverted back to type. 41.366 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) [Only in Theatres] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the first film in a new trilogy that continues the story of original trilogy that ended with War for the Planet of the Apes. Set 300 years after the events of the last movie, the Apes have now divided themselves into various clans after the death of their leader, Caesar. Noa is an ape from a clan that specialises in falconry. When his village is attacked & his clan is taken prisoner, he sets out to save them with the help of Mae, a human scavenger and Raka, an Orangutan. What keeps you engaged is the storytelling prowess and the stunning visuals. Given the movie is 99% Apes, the motion capture does wonders for the film. Even calling it lifelike is an understatement. And given the Apes have evolved even more over the course of 300 years, they now converse in fluent English with humans reduced to mute scavengers. But the issue with Kingdom is the Caesar sized whole left by one of the greatest characters written for screen and performed for screen by Andy Serkis.@realowenteague as Noa is effective in his own way. You do feel for his character in places and I am pretty sure there will be more characters joining Noa given the upcoming events in the franchise. @freyaallan (The Witcher), who plays Mae is brilliant and so is @thekevindurand , who portrays Proximus Caeser, the self-proclaimed leader of another ape clan. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes does not leave you in awe like the Caeser trilogy did but it is a worthy addition to the franchise. #TheFallGuy is a film for film people. Not to say those who don’t work in the entertainment industry won’t find this entertaining. There’s just so many added layers of funny if you have ever worked on a set before because all the dynamics are there! It made me homesick for being on a project! I think this is the closest thing I have as an example for how it is working on a set! At the end of the day though, The Fall Guy is up there with “The Stunt Man” as films that are love letters to the stunt people. Every action sequence is done to showcase all what they can do. I will slightly complain that I feel a lot of the sequences do run on a tad bit too long. The exception being a fight set to a split version of “Against All Odds” between Phil Collins and #EmilyBlunt! I could watch that all day! #ryangosling is in this place in his career where he is playing the macho looking men who are really just softies inside, and I am beyond here for it!! The entire soundtrack is chief’s kiss! I can out of the theater and straight to Spotify! I also found myself dying of laughter. I’m sad this isn’t doing as well as it should! 40.366 Nadikar (2024) [Only in Theatres] Movie about movies has become common this year. We have got three in the last two months with two coming last Friday. For those who have watched The Fall Guy, the actor in it is depicted as an arrogant character. Nadikar is about one such arrogant actor played by Tovino Thomas. Nadikar is the story of David Padikkal, an actor who has delivered three blockbusters early in his career. This propels him to the so-called superstar status. When his movies start to bomb, his arrogance gets in the way of his performances. To counter this, he employs someone to teach him acting. Lal Jr., unlike his father isn't exactly synonymous with blockbuster films. But the effort is visible. I personally loved Driving License. Even Nadikar is a good attempt at capturing how success gets to the head of actors. Tovino Thomas' performance captures the arrogance bit really well. But his transformation isn't something that is explored/captured in detail. His traumatic past is wrapped up in minutes. @sureshkrishna_5 and @soubinshahir stood out for me in this film. Balu Varghese, @ganapathisp_official , @chanduveeyyy , Anoop Menon, Bhavana co-star with Indrans in a heartfelt cameo. Unlike Malayalee from India (the other release of the week), Nadikar will not appeal to everyone. Though it keeps you hooked, Nadikar is a lost opportunity. Review: The Fall Guy. I've seen a lot of films this year covering many genres. But if all you want is to leave the cinema with a smile on your face, this is the best film of 2024 thus far. Loosely based upon a 1980's TV show I'm actually old enough to remember, this is an action / adventure, comedy / romance where our 'fall guy', a Hollywood stuntman, has to save the day, find a missing movie star and reignite a romance with the love of his life, all within a 126 minute runtime. Ryan Gosling, never very likeable pre-Barbie for me is fantastic here, and has amazing chemistry with Emily Blunt. Throw in a great soundtrack, action, Easter eggs, comedy and maybe a twist as well, this really was great film-going fun. If you go to the cinema this month. Go see this. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and felt like it was a breath of fresh air. While it's loosely based on a TV show from the 80's the idea is original and it was so much fun. Also, you couldn't have asked for a better combination of leads. Ryan Gosling continues to be a highly underrated king of comedy and is so good at his pacing and delivery of lines. He's also just a great actor overall and I don't know why so many people don't seem to show up for him. Emily Blunt is also charming as ever, but also isn't afraid to kick some serious butt (as she did so beautifully in this movie). Their chemistry together was so great and one of my complaints of the movie is that we didn't get as much of that as I would've really liked. Winston Duke was also hilarious in this movie and had some great scenes throughout the movie. Stephanie Hsu also had some short scenes in the movie, but absolutely stole the screen in those moments and I'm glad to see her in more movies after Everything Everywhere All at Once. The action scenes were all well done though and fun to watch. You could tell that they really cared about the stunts and it showed on screen. The script and story could be a little clunky at times and cheesy, but it was done in a self aware enough way that I was able to forgive it for that. I also liked getting a small sneak peek into what it's like to be a stunt man and be on the set of a film as well as that is something that has always fascinated me. The nod that they gave to stunt people during the credits as well was awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed that. I'm sad to see that this one wasn't a bigger hit at the box office because we won't get more movies like this if they don't make money. We'll just keep getting more franchises and remakes because that's what sells as much as people bag on it. Anyway small rant over, moving on. So even though some parts of this movie were generic and plot twists were easy to see from a mile out. Wow, remember how in the early 2000s, PG-13 horror movies were kind of built more around the jump scares even though their plot could have been the more interesting thing had they paid a little more love to it? That is kind of how I feel about #Tarot. A group of friends have rented an isolated house in order to celebrate one of their own’s birthday. When they stumble upon a deck of tarot cards they decide that the smart thing would be to give readings even with the tarot expert kindly reminds them that one shouldn’t use someone else’s cards. Soon after everyone starts getting picked off one by one and their deaths are similar to their center tarot card. I will tell you right now that this entire film is completely predictable from the moment those cards come out. I sat there calling out deaths left and right… it also doesn’t help that many of them are in the trailer. If you seemed to still be clueless as to what was coming from the visuals the soundtrack took care of that! Every song was so on the nose I felt like I was being mansplained to… clearly people are not this clueless, are they? The eye song (IYKYK) did managed to freak me out, it got extra creepy coming back up in the credits so I will give it that. The characters are very one dimensional. Their deaths are fun even though extremely predictable. The ending will have you pissed (Such a lazy man cop out). The makeup effects are freaking awesome and they kind of reminded me of some of the ghosts in Thirteen Ghosts. I only wish we could have gotten to see them more. My guess is because of the PG-13 death sentence they couldn’t linger too long. I also enjoyed visually showing us the backstory instead of just telling us. Mad props for anyone who attempts to insert flash backs (I’m a sucker for a good flashback section of a horror movie). I wonder if shooting Serbia for Massachusetts (which is a new one for me) was a way to get around the strikes. Why they hell just not set it over there then? Confesso que a adolescente que ainda vive em mim, estava em pulgas para ver o filme... com muitas reservas quanto ao papel principal ter sido entregue ao Nicholas Galitzine (não gostei do papel dele em Red, White & Royal Blue). Imaginava melhor o Taylor Zakhar Perez neste papel... mas ok, se a personagem é inspirada no Harry Styles, teria de ser alguém britânico e não latino (talvez pudesse o próprio Harry?!?!?)! E no entanto, gostei muito mais de o ver neste papel de vocalista dos August Moon. E a surpresa das surpresas? O rapaz toca piano, guitarra e ainda canta bem?!?!?!? 😳 Conheci-lhe toda uma outra faceta! Given the casting department is getting their due in ceremony next year; the stunt department should be next. Until then, watch director @davidmleitch 's (Deadpool 2) The Fall Guy, a tribute to the stunt department. After a career ending accident sets stuntman Colt's career back by a few years; he makes his comeback in his ex-girlfriend's directorial debut. While working on the film, he is asked to find the star of the movie, who seems to have got involved with some shady people. Ryan Gosling, who is still basking under the success of Barbie delivers yet another memorable performance. His pairing with Emily Blunt works wonders. And any movie with Blunt in it is a must watch for me. She brings a lot to a movie with her presence alone. @winstoncduke co-stars as a stunt coordinator, Hannah Waddingham plays the producer and @aarontaylorjohnson , the arrogant star of the movie. The Fall Guy does become a middling affair at times but the chemistry between the leads, the action behind the camera of how the stunt team functions brings some sort of freshness to the movie. 38.366 Malayalee from India (2024) [Only in Theatres] I was skeptical about going for this movie after hearing the polarizing reviews. To see the audiences divided like this was a surprise. Nevertheless, I had to check it out because of @dijojoseantony & Nivin. Gopi (Nivin) & Molghosh (Dhyan) are slackers & party workers for a political party that is yet to open their account in Kerala. When a communal incident threatens to bring harm, Gopi is sent to another country. His experiences there bring about a change in him. There is a lot to love in this satire-comedy-drama by Dijo. I particularly loved how tastefully he takes a jab at the current political climate in the country. There is also a reference to an erstwhile giant among the edtech companies. And there is a lot to smile & laugh about, unlike the general opinion of there being not much comedy. Yes, the final 15-20 minutes was a drag (the only drawback for me) but the events of the 2nd half gave me a good laugh. @nivinpaulyactor is the star of the movie & is reminiscent of the Nivin that we all love. His chemistry with @dhyansreenivasan in the first half and with Deepak Jethi in the 2nd is what works for the film. @pillai_manju , @salimkumar_actor, @shinetomchacko_official & @anaswara.rajan co-star. I loved Nivin as Aalparambil Gopi & his performance makes this film a decent one time watch. Dune tornou-se numa saga favorita. Gosto de filmes de ficção científica e se forem passados em mundos que não o nosso, ainda gosto mais. Voltei a recordar Dune parte l para poder apreciar em plenitude a parte ll e foi o melhor que fiz! Qualquer um dos elencos, é uma chuva de estrelas. Podemos ter perdido algumas delas pelo meio (com muita pena minha que são só actores que eu venero!), mas nesta parte ll também ganhámos novas aquisições. Conseguiram juntar, numa só filme, os 2 actores que, para mim, são os mais promissores da sua geração, o Timothée Chalamet e o Austin Butler. E a cena que eles protagonizam juntos, foi para mim das melhores do filme. Bravo!!! 👏 👏 👏 Neste 2º filme, tudo parece ainda mais grandioso. Até a paisagem árida de Arrakis parece ter vida e ela própria se transforma numa personagem principal. Os efeitos visuais são tão realistas que nos esquecemos que estamos perante algo criado via CGI. A banda sonora parece saída do outro mundo. O Hans Zimmer não brinca em serviço e arrisca-se (e muito bem) a levar mais um Oscar para juntar à sua coleção. Narrated in a non-linear fashion with scenes from the present (2019) interspaced; Challengers is the story of Art, a tennis player who is currently in a slump & is married to Tashi, a former tennis prodigy. To bring him back to form for an upcoming tournament, Tashi enrolls Art in a Challenger event where he meets his best friend and Tashi's ex, John in the finals. Zendaya has been on a role with back to back hits. In Challengers, she portrays someone who is obsessed with & she manipulates people by playing mind games just to get her way. She is just phenomenal! Her co-stars, @mikefaist (West Side Story) & Josh O'Connor (The Crown) are brilliant together. I especially love what Mike Faist's character arc- once a man full of life and energy becomes devoid of any after he gets together with Tashi, who plunges him into a life of only tennis. The background score needs a special mention because it sets the mood for the film. I was on Shazam throughout trying to figure out which is which. A scintillating techno score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. The score combined with the dizzying camera work on the 🎾 bits are amazing! Challengers is a visual and auditory treat with a stellar Zendaya in the lead. 🎥 Movies of 2024 🍿 #20 - The Color Purple Already one of my favourite books, I was nervous when I heard the movie concept (having not come across the Broadway show or original movie previously), but I knew I had to see it. The short run in cinemas meant I didn’t catch it straight away and made me even more nervous about the box office bomb. Having finally seen it, it was greater than I ever could have imagined. Another director who understands light and shade, a soundtrack which sings directly to your soul, and a cast who couldn’t have captured their characters more perfectly. The colours and dancing. A reminder there is always something to be grateful for. As soon as it finished I could happily have restarted it and watched it again straight away, if I’d had enough time left on my flight. 🎥 Movies of 2024 🍿 #19 - Napoleon Not for me, but I thought I’d give it a chance. Difficult to review objectively when I know it’s not really my thing, but it seemed decent enough. The highlight for me was the soundtrack, epic from start to finish. I struggled to follow all the plot; I’m sure in part due to my lack of historical knowledge but it didn’t help that most of the characters spoke in received pronunciation English regardless of where they came from. Made it hard to follow who was fighting who! Personally didn’t see the need for it to be that long. There were some amusing scenes but it was mostly dry to me. 36.366 Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) [Only in Theatres] Frozen Empire is the kind of sequel that is made just for the sake of making a sequel. I understand Afterlife did well; it received good reviews after the female led Ghostbusters movie tanked. I enjoyed Afterlife as well, even though it was a movie that wasn't needed. But the latest entry is just dismal. Set 3 years after the events of Afterlife, the Spenglers have moved to New York to resurrect the Ghostbusters. But when a mysterious orb is opened, an ancient evil threatens to end the world by engulfing it in ice. The Spenglers team up with the original team to save the world. My biggest problem with these half-baked sequels are how cheesy they are. And if you are well-versed with Paul Rudd's performances, you would know how similar his performances are in every movie. I don't see any difference between Scott Lang and whatever his name is in Frozen Empire. The OG cast is just namesake. The only saving grace and the heart of the film is Mckenna Grace's character. Everyone else just hams there way through. Kumail Nanjiani's character is added just to give the Asian aura to the orb and it's history. Frozen Empire is a pretty pathetic film. Set in Bengaluru, three friends get thrashed by their seniors from college. To exact revenge, they enlist the help of a seemingly friendly don, Ranga. What sets Fahadh apart from other onscreen dons is how he gives his own spin to the character. He is a don with a conscience and has been through a lot before he decided to adopt such a life. Clad from head to toe in white and adorning multiple gold chains, Fahadh's Ranga is the most lovable don you will see onscreen. His vulnerability strikes a chord. And just like all other dons, Ranga has a loyal sidekick in Anban, played @sajingopu (Romancham). The two make for a dynamic pair. The three friends played by Hipster, Mithun Jai Shankar & Roshan Shahnavaz are good. @sushintdt 's music is at it's thumping best. I just wish they had the 'Illuminati' track sometime during the film. Aavesham is Fahadh's film and he owns it. His new avatar, a never before seen massy role is something to marvel at. This may just be my favourite Fahadh role since Kumbalangi Nights. This film understands light and shade, loud and quiet, high and low. 33.365 Civil War (2024) [Only in Theatres] Alex Garland is a visionary filmmaker. If you have seen even one of his films, you would know how close to home it hits. And all his films are set in an alternate/dystopian/futuristic world. Set in a dystopian USA, a civil war has broken out between a tyrannical government and various regional groups. A group of journalists are trying to make their way to Washington before the White House is taken. Civil War captures their experience as they make their way through a war torn country. Civil War is Garland's only film that is the closest to reality with zero fantasy elements. There are many who claim that this is a foreseeable future for the country in question. One particular scene in the movie featuring Jesse Plemmons (who isn't credited for his role) has the most impact. That one scene sums up the entire movie & a world that we are racing towards. The primary cast featuring @kirstendunst as a famous war photographer, @caileespaeny as an aspiring war photographer, Wagner Moura and @stephenmckinleyhenderson deliver brilliant performances especially the two leading ladies. Civil War isn't a war movie. So, don't go in expecting one. It is about how a war torn country is perceived by a group of journalists. It does feature some gunfire exchanges. 32.366 Varshangalkku Shesham (2024) [Only in Theatres] @vineeth84 movies have a certain vibe about them. They can all be best described as a nice, warm hug (except Thira). Varshangalkku Shesham is Vineeth's second collaboration with both Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan in a film about films (a much adored genre). Set in two time periods, 50 years apart, Varshangalkku Shesham is the story of two friends, who travel to Madras in an attempt to make it big in the film industry. This is Vineeth's 2nd film with a huge star cast. The challenge of doing a film with a huge cast is what deterred him from making this film earlier (the idea for this film was born years back). And if you have watched the teaser, you would know how big the cast is. Amidst this crowd there are a select few who stand out. @dhyansreenivasan 's Venu, who is the narrator of this story, may have just delivered his best performance of career. From the moment he springs onto the screen; from his youthful, cheery days to the old man Venu days; he doesn't miss a beat. @pranavmohanlal 's Murali, a talented composer compliments Venu well. Their camaraderie works wonders. Though old man Murali doesn't leave the intended impact. @nivinpaulyactor , who plays a fictionalised version of himself is a riot and he is clearly enjoying every moment of it (will 2024 be his year?). @neeraj_madhav , @ibasiljoseph , @ajuvarghese play other notable characters in the film. @amritramnath takes Hesham's place from Hridayam and does a wonderful job at giving us a soundtrack that has a song for every mood. His Nyabagam and Karakaana (the latter's placement in the film is a throwback for the ages!). Varshangalkku Shesham does have a runtime issue but I am willing to overlook that given how pleasant and welcoming the film was. Shrek 2: Went and saw this for the 20th anniversary (cringes as I realize how old I am) re-release in theaters for date night with the wifey. We had an absolute blast and it was great to see this masterpiece on the big screen finally as I never did see it in theaters as a kid. The jokes are constantly flying in this film and they are all hilarious. Our audience was full of adults who were laughing out loud the whole time and it was just a great experience. But really though this movie goes so hard when it doesn't even need to and is just great because of it. There are too many iconic scenes to even recount in this review but seeing the "I Need A Hero," sequence on a giant screen was maybe one of the most satisfying things I've seen on a theater screen. 😂 (Only slightly joking) If you don't enjoy these movies I'm so sorry for you and your loss, but the Shrek franchise (and specifically Shrek 2) are in my top favorite animated movies of all time. Shrek 2 is probably in my top 5. Anyway if you're a fan or haven't seen it in a while, most theaters are showing it for $5 and it was the most fun I've had in a while so I'd say it's worth the trip. 🤷🏻♂️ 10 Things I Hate About You: It's a classic 90s chick flick for a reason and is a fun watch. 30.366 Maidaan (2024) [Only in Theatres| Streaming Partner: @primevideoin ] Maidaan started pre-production in 2019 and faced multiple delays due to COVID. It wrapped up filming in 2022 and then a lot of time was spent in post-production. And after multiple release date shifts, Maidaan is finally here and yes, the post-production work seems to have paid off because the football action is superb! The same cannot be said about the film on the whole though. Maidaan is set during the golden era of Indian Football (1952-1962). A time when coach Syed Abdul Rahim built a team that could lock horns with European giants and was even given the title; "Brazil of Asia". His contribution led the Indian Football Team to gold at the 1962 Asian Games. Maidaan is a technically brilliant film. The football action is one of the best I ever seen onscreen. There has been stone left unturned in in the making of this film and I was beyond impressed by it. Even @ajaydevgn 's performance is commendable. @gajrajrao , @pillumani , Devyansh Tripathi, @madhur_mittal co-star. The issue with the film lies in it's content. There isn't a lot to cover when it comes to the Golden Era of Indian Football. Though it is a time that needs to celebrated and given more visibility but it isn't sufficient to justify a 180 minute runtime. Maidaan could have undergone atleast a 45 minute trim-down and it would have been more effective. There is a lot of drama throughout, Syed's personal life is given a lot of importance and that drags the film down. It is only when it is about football that the film actually soars. A R Rahman's contribution doesn't add much to the film. The emotional connect is missing for most of the runtime but the final game was 🔥🔥🔥! Maidaan is a well made film about the golden era of Indian Football that works well when it is about football but falters during the dramatic bits. I saw @a24 's #CivilWarMovie, no spoilers. In short, I thought this film was brilliant. The performances and direction were great, the story on a second American Civil War was disturbing, intense, and emotional at times. Imagine Saving Private Ryan but from the point-of-view of a group of journalists. The film had looked beautiful from the scope and scale of the film's cinematography and good music score by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow. And the editing and sound mixing were instantly on point. I can see this flick be divisive and too disturbing for someone viewers. It does comes close to home and what's going on now in the United States. Me personally, it's more of a necessary warning what would happen if we continue following the wrong path. But overall, I still highly recommend this film. After her Twilight days, Stewart's choice of roles have been brilliant and she just keeps better with each film. And a combination with A24 makes it even more enticing! Her latest, Loves Lies Bleeding, directed by Rose Glass (Saint Maud) is a brilliant romantic thriller that has Kristen playing a gym manager, Lou. Lou falls heads over heels for Jackie, a bodybuilder, who moves to her hometown with hopes of earning her passage to LA. With Jackie in her life, things start to go terribly wrong especially because Lu's estranged father and criminal, Lou Sr. gets involved. Set in the late 80s, Love Lies Bleeding captures the essence of that era beautifully. The colourful clothes, the hype around bodybuilding/body building competitions and funky hairdos. But the best part about the film is the lead pair of Kristen Stewart and @thekatyo . Their chemistry is off the charts. Their characters instantly hit it off. Though I would advise you to catch this movie on streaming because in Indian theatres, some very choppy editing has been done to suit the Indian palette. Ed Harris plays Lou's estranged father, @jenamalone plays Lou's sister and Dave Franco plays Lou's brother-in-law. I feel like I will enjoy this one more on future rewatches, but the first viewing was a slight let down. While I was happy to see the legacy characters return and actually do some ghostbusting (albeit very little) it felt like they detracted from the trajectory of the story arc. This movie spent so much time trying to remind you of what happened in past movies and establishing the villain and introducing even more characters and lore that it seemed to forget what makes this franchise so fun, which is the actual characters just fighting some simple ghosts. Instead the stakes were raised to a massive world ending threat (slight spoilers the rest of this sentence) that didn't really seem to be all that crazy based on how quickly things resolved in the end. 🤷🏻♂️ I still had fun watching it for the most part though and there were parts that were pretty creepy. The cast, while overstuffed, was having a blast though and I think that's what helped it to at least be pretty entertaining. The plot was very predictable though and I saw pretty much every plot twist coming from miles away. If you're a longtime fan of this franchise though I still think you'll enjoy it. The rating may be low as far as my "critical" appraisal of this movie goes, but the experience was 5 stars hands down. I have been studying for a national licensure exam that kinda determines the course of my life and decided that I needed a brainless popcorn flick. Well ladies and gents I'm happy to report that this fulfilled both of those expectations flawlessly. 😂 Jokes aside it was $5 Tuesday and they had it showing in IMAX 3D as part of that deal and I thought why the heck not. This was a cinematic experience and I enjoyed every second of it, the scope of this film definitely was made to be seen on the biggest screen possible and the 3D just really made the visuals pop and the "in your face" effect was used well too which is a rarity with most 3D movies nowadays. I'll be honest and say that I haven't seen the prior 2 movies in the Monsterverse, but even without it I still enjoyed this one and the bonkers story it presented. The fights were so much fun to watch and the effects were super well done and I was impressed with how realistic it looked. This is still hands down one of my all time favorite movies and I could genuinely have it on repeat and never get sick of it. I think I enjoy it so much because it covers so many human experiences in one film and in very relatable and realistic ways. It also is just a powerhouse of a movie in regard to the performances and script. Seriously though the cast of this movie is insane: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek, and more. And all of them are SO good in it! I think that Jessica Chastain stole this movie in particular, but I also think every other one of the actresses I listed were spectacular as well. The story is so well done and I can't say enough good things about it. 28.366 The First Omen (2024) [Only in Theatres] Resurrecting a 48 year old franchise isn't easy. Though the original Omen had sequels and a forgettable remake, they did not have the intended impact. And since it has been a trend off late to breathe life into old franchises, the Omen series wasn't far behind. The First Omen is a prequel to the original movie. It basically charts out the events up until Damien is born. It follows the journey of a young American, who moves to Rome to begin her services to the church. And as always, the protagonist encounters strange occurrences. And then.. you know the flow. We have now been treated to two Italy based church horror films, one starring @sydney_sweeney in Immaculate and now The First Omen featuring @nelltigerfree (Apple TV's The Servant) just two weeks apart. Not sure about Immaculate, but The First Omen does a decent job at providing us with a compelling horror film. But we all knew how the story was going to end given that it ties into the 1976 original. An intense, body horror filled second half makes up for the lacklustre first half. Review: Monkey Man Didn't get to see this as soon as I had planned, Dev Patel's directorial debut, which is a vigilante violent and gory revenge thriller with shades of John Wick. And surprisingly, this is better, certainly than the last one anyway. Dev Patel convinces as an action star, seeing revenge on those responsible for childhood trauma, and his quest takes him on bloody battles through the murky underworld as well as on a personal journey to remember who he is. Although I had heard the camera work was rather frenetic at times, it actually worked for me as it helped illustrate the chaotic nature of the location it was set in, and the wild nature of the storyline. Additionally, I also thought some of the cinematography and shot selections were outstanding. I really liked this, and I can see it being a huge hit. My opinion to-d and fro-d about Olivia Coleman and Anjana Vasan, but I think they acted well and it was more their characters that left something to be desired. There was a disappointing lack of depth to most of the characters, and it was difficult to understand their motives for various things. The movie over-relied on swearing as a cheap tactic for humour. The film drew many a delighted chuckle (and the occasional guffaw) from the audience. Da’Vine Joy Randolph was the star in my eyes, creating so much depth and range of emotion in Mary. The film was at times heartbreaking but ultimately heartwarming. If only it had come out at Christmastime as originally planned. The cinematography kept the focus on Priscilla through shots and shadows, though it was impossible not to notice that any scene without Elvis seemed quieter and less colourful. That said, sometimes the extrovertness of Elvis’s scenes overwhelmed. I enjoyed the movie and the different side of the story, but I would have liked to see a bit more about Priscilla’s life after Elvis.
