March was a great month for watching movies. The weather was flip-flopping between cold winter weather and rainy spring days which created a nice mood for staying inside and watching films. 1. Gone with the Wind - Was the only film from the AFI Top 100 Films that I did not watch with my college roommate since it was nearly 4 hours long. Finally got around to watching this one and it was worth it. Spectacular film for its time and still holds up today. 2. Six Days Seven Nights - I pretty much like everything Harrison Ford is in and this one was no different. A bit silly at times, but an all-around enjoyable watch. 3. Poor Things - This movie was beyond wild. I am still unsure how I feel about the film as a whole, but from a style and cinematography standpoint this film is 100% new and unique.... to say the least. Warning: This movie is pretty graphic - watch at your own peril. 4. Wonka - This is a fun and playful movie that tugs on your nostalgic heartstrings and while it doesn't live up to the original, it is an enjoyable watch with some classic music. 5. Big George Foreman - This movie was a cool telling of George Foreman's story from becoming the Heavyweight World Champion to completely quitting boxing and following God then returning to the ring to regain his title at the age of 46 which is unheard of! Have you seen these movies?

🎞️ Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) 🎥 Martin Scorsese ⭐️ 5/5 • What. a. film. It’s hard for me to perfectly put into words what I think about this film just because of the monstrosity scale of what is being discussed in the film, and the almost devastating feeling I had after watching it. I’m neither Indigenous nor American, so the topics of this film weren’t familiar to me at all but I was left astounded by how deep and heartbreaking this story was. The subtle but tragic performance given by Lily Gladstone accentuates the horror and helplessness that faced the Osage community. Although most people may complain about the 3.5 hours run-time, I feel that this is too short to perfectly tell the extensive events of this part of American history. Yet, it still manages to fit so much story into little time in a way that is concise, engaging and powerful, delivering one of the best highlights of Scorsese’s career. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Nero also provide some of their best performances of their careers by showcasing how horrific and manipulative these people were in orchestrating these murders. The score plus the final ending really pushed the film over the edge for me and left me haunted and thoughtful for hours. 🎞️ Saltburn (2023) 🎥 Emerlad Fennell ⭐️ 3.5/5 • As controversial and talked about as this movie is, I felt quite disappointed with the outcome of this movie. As we follow a socially awkward and outcast Barry Keoghan, we follow his infatuation with Jacob Elordi’s character and Saltburn grow, as well as uncover some of the mystery surrounding growing around the movie. For the first two acts of the movie, I was quite invested in the story and was interested in the dynamics presented between Keoghan and Saltburn, although I did feel that most characters were one note and could have been provided with more insight into their motivations and actions. However, by the third act, I began feeling disengaged from the story and completely out by the ending. I believe that the ending should’ve been left more ambiguous, and focused more on providing a sound structured movie that greater explores its characters and themes. The highlights of the movie were definitely the cinematography and performances, specifically from Rosamund Pike, who stole the show with every scene she’s in. 🎞️ The Holdovers (2023) 🎥 Alexander Payne ⭐️ 4/5 • The Holdovers is one of the most wholesome movies of the year. It’s been a while since such a simple and heartwarming Christmas story has been told and this definitely didn’t disappoint. Firstly, we have to acknowledge the amazing performances of the three central characters. Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa all deliver performances that are key to the film working as well as it did, and perfectly deliver the found family trope. The idea of everyone fighting their own silent struggles and a reminder to treat everyone with kindness and compassion is an important topic in the film and provides the audience with a sense of relatability. This also the characters to bond greatly over the course of the film and makes the film more emotional and endearing to watch. The only qualm I had was that the runtime felt a little too long and dragged the film down a bit. 🎞️ Barbie (2023) 🎥 Greta Gerwig ⭐️ 4.5/5 • First and foremost, making a film that is independent of any franchise or well-known movie IP, and have it be one of the highest grossing films of all time is a major accomplishment and I applaud all of the people who were involved on this project. Barbie is such a fun and energetic movie, but had a lot more heart and emotion then I previously thought going into it. Of course we were all expecting the fun dance sequences, bright colours (especially pink) and larger-than-life characters, however, the story of what it means to be human makes the film much more resonating than previously thought. The idea of what makes someone human is the central core of the story and is explored excellently through Margot Robbie’s performance. The emotions of happiness, sadness, excitement, worry, anxiety, triumph and more are all part of the human experience and part of what makes life a beautiful (and also difficult) experience that everyone goes through. Having Barbie choose to leave the dream world and become human means she chooses to accept the ups and downs of life; and that is something that all of us should choose to do as well. 🎞️ Oppenheimer (2023) 🎥 Christopher Nolan ⭐️ 5/5 • I believe that Oppenheimer is a demonstration of powerhouse and perfect film-making. Everything from the cinematography, to the performances, to the score and directing, I think that this film may just be the best of the year. It’s no secret that Christopher Nolan is just an undeniable master director of our time but the way he’s able to deliver a 3 hour, R-rated, historical biopic about an atomic bomb remains to be discussed for years to come. With a run time of this size, it becomes easy to add a lot of unnecessary ‘baggage’ and drag the film down. However, I did not feel this with Oppenheimer and felt that every shot and scene was necessary to effectively tell this story (although the explicit scenes did feel irrelevant in the long run, I do understand the importance of this person in Oppenheimer’s life). Of course, this film contains the most masterful performances of the entire year, Cillian Murphy being a clear highlight, the score plays another entity entirely in communicating this story. The invigorating and almost anxiety-driven score is played throughout the entire film but doesn’t feel overbearing. 🎞️ All of Us Strangers (2023) 🎥 Andrew Haigh ⭐️ 4/5 • All of Us Strangers is a beautiful film about love, loneliness and loss, and dealing with this in our personal lives. Going into it I thought the film would focus primarily on the relationship between Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, however, it actually focuses mainly on Scott’s character and how he deals with grief over the loss of his parents at a young age. I found this decision to make the film more emotional and devastating through the performances and more conceptual communications. As much as this made the film more moving, I do wish they discussed more of Mescal’s character, such as his own dealings with problems and relationship with Scott. Furthermore, I do believe that the ending should have had a happier tone as it would have conveyed a message of finding oneself after grief and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Last Night at Terrace Lanes came out to rent on Tuesday. The film takes place at a bowling alley, as Kennedy and her dad have to survive the invasion of murderous cult members. The biggest positive here is the unique location of a bowling alley. It provides for some fun, comedic kills with different items and just a classic retro look and feel. The flick is also only 75 minutes long, so it moves by fairly quickly. While I did like the setup here, unfortunately it fails to do much exciting with it. Most likely due to a smaller budget, there's not much gore being shown. The kills are very tamed down, and that was disappointing. Along with that, it was extremely hard to get invested at times due to the performances. Mainly in the first 30 minutes, the acting was very challenging to engage with — after that it got much better, however. Plain and simple, this is a weak script. Lore behind the cult wasn't explored much, and we never really get a true answer as to why the bowling alley is of significance. This caused a lack of tension, and I never really sensed the threat that I should have. Overall, Last Night at Terrace Lanes fails to live up to the whacky nature of its premise. There isn't enough gore, the cults' intentions aren't explored enough and the acting is choppy at times.
