Boy Kills World was released on April 26. The film follows Boy, who is on a mission to assassinate the bloodthirsty Hilda Van Der Koy and avenge his family's murder. This film moves at a very fast pace, quickly montaging through Boy's life over the first 15 minutes. The quirky transitions and immersive action set the tone very early on for what the movie is going to be. The action is by far the highlight here, and easily some of the best of 2024. Not only is the choreography phenomenal, but Boy Kills World does not hold back on the gore... at all. If you came for blood, this will definitely deliver in that department. The flick is also hilarious at times, interjecting a perfect dose of comedy into both its storyline and action sequences alike. While the plot is fairly predictable and similar to other movies from the past, Boy Kills World does deliver a solid dosage of twists to keep things interesting. Effective use of flashbacks aid in this, as we learn bits and pieces about Boy along the way, but it's never the complete picture. My main gripe with Boy Kills World is the narration. It works comedically in moments, but at the same time it also feels like overkill. Because Boy is a silent character, the narration is used to express his inner thoughts. At times, however, it devolves into overlong or unnecessary exposition that bogs down the movie. Because of this, it sort of limits the point of having Boy be silent and makes me unsure as to why they didn't just have him talk, since we are hearing all of his internal dialogue anyways. Overall, Boy Kills World is an absolute blast. It features creative camerawork, fast-paced editing and exhilarating action. The Mad Max Franchise Ranked (Mad Max - Furiosa) So… my ranking is probably a controversial one. Most will prefer Fury Road, and even the Road Warrior, to Furiosa. But, Fury Road and Furiosa are essentially one complete story in my eyes, and Furiosa’s storytelling was an alluring aspect to me. Both films are phenomenal though, and even Beyond Thunderdome has its redeeming qualities. There isn’t an objectively bad Mad Max film in my opinion: with that said, don’t treat my ranking as fact, it’s just my opinion. In our hyper-capitalistic and consumerist world, I grew up striving to be the most ambitious person in the world – wealth, fame, success, “making it big in life” – our lives condensed into this constant struggle for greatness, to achieve more and more and more. And while its perfectly fine if that’s what you want to do with your life, the film Perfect Days felt like an eye-opener for me in the sense that it portrayed a different way of living, it provides you with an alternate perspective that’s beautiful in its simplicity. A life that isn’t spent on a constant pursuit for more but one that’s enjoyed, savoured, where we find joy in the little things – the morning sun, a beloved song, a random interaction with a stranger – and so on. There is so much more to our lives than our careers and ambitions and I think its truly sad that we’ve reduced ourselves to that – and that’s why I said that this film is an eye-opener: there are other ways of living too. If I told you that this film is about a man who cleans toilets, your immediate assumption would be that it’s a film about poverty and destitution, about a man desperately trying to make ends meet and overcome the scarcities in his life – but its not about that at all. Perfect Days lets us into the life of Hiarayama. His days are slow, well-planned and find meaning and pleasure in the smaller things of life. He follows a simple routine. Every day, he wakes up, waters his plants, as he leaves his house, he looks up at the sky and smiles, happy with the weather of the day. He works the morning shift cleaning public toilets in Tokyo (side note: as an Indian I am amazed at just how beautiful these toilets are). He works diligently, checking with a mirror to make sure he leaves no spots uncleaned. We see him driving his blue van listening to 70-80s music using cassettes he has collected over the years. He eats his lunch in a serene park and every day, as the sunlight falls through the foliage, he takes a picture of it – the same sight, every day. The trees are his friends and he also plants saplings from the park in his backyard that he lovingly takes care of. continued ⬇️
The Last Movie Ever Made was released on VOD on May 7. The film follows Marshall, who convinces a group of friends and strangers to help finish the sci-fi movie he abandoned in high school as the world is about to end. Unsure of what to watch a few nights ago, I looked up a list of 2024 movie releases. With an intriguing title and synopsis, I decided to rent The Last Movie Ever Made on Prime Video. Having never heard of this before, I didn't expect to love it so much. This is an amazing movie. It's probably one that not many people will see, but that shouldn't be the case. Right from the start, the flick encapsulates you in this strange world. At the heart of the story is Marshall, a very complex and multi-layered character. At first glance, he appears to be straightforward and even rude in moments. However, as we slowly learn more and more about Marshall, it adds new meanings and levity to his dream of finishing this abandoned movie. This is a character that you're not always meant to agree with, but his development throughout the runtime is very powerful and relatable. The story itself is very small-scale and personal as well. We all have these crazy ideas or dreams that we were never able to accomplish, and seeing Marshall and his friends deliver on this goal was both hilarious and heartfelt at the same time. There are a lot of touching moments here that allow you to reflect on your own life, while also having multiple laugh-out-loud scenes to balance it. The Last Movie Ever Made excels both in its emotional moments and when it's not taking itself so seriously. I couldn't help but have a huge grin on my face as The Last Movie Ever Made came to a close, along with some tears to cap it off. Overall, The Last Movie Ever Made is a hidden gem and there's not many films like it. It manages to capture the beauty of filmmaking, while also celebrating love, friendships and life itself. It's all about crime and class war with Amat Escalante's very underrated LOST IN THE NIGHT. A beguiling and nasty exploration of the ties between crime and rigid class structures that, like far too many films, has been buried deep in the Netflix algorithm. Escalante remains my favorite director in the contemporary Mexican scene, and this one has real Roberto Bolano energy throughout, so what's not to love. It's absolutely electric stuff, and I really regret not seeing it sooner because it would've easily made my top ten list for last year. Horror movies’ zine. “Scuro” is a series of zines edited by @kaijumaddy, bringing together several authors. I’ll focus on the edition dedicated to Folk Horror. Before delving into the zine, I must first say that the Scuro logo is of great beauty; I love everything about it: the black ink at the bottom of the characters, the shivers of the typography, and the skull. This zine is designed like a magazine, so you’ll find articles, reviews, interviews, open letters, cultural suggestions, and even games. Everything to please the horror movie enthusiast! I particularly enjoyed the worldwide tour proposed through folk horror films. It’s refreshing to move away from the USA or UK. You’ll find Japanese, South Korean, Czech, Russian, German, and Mexican titles. I really appreciate the fact that several horror movie fans were asked to name their favorite film set in the woods. Robert Eggers’ film “The Witch” was very popular. I’m glad that a article talks about “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death,” which is a film that I believe is too little known. The DIY aesthetic with adhesive tapes gives personality and tone to the zine. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was released on May 10. The film takes place many years after the reign of Caesar, as a young ape goes on a journey that leads him to question everything he's been taught and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. Right from the start, I love the way that Caesar's legacy is interwoven throughout the entire movie. Similar to the real world, his message has taken on many different forms, being twisted and misinterpreted by many. Still, he plays a key role in this story even after his death. Many people mention Avatar when discussing the best of visual effects, but I've always felt like the Planet of the Apes movies should be up there as well. It's no different here, as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is able to create an entire immersive world. Not only are the apes themselves extremely well done, but the action sequences here are as intense and visceral as ever, making me feel like I was right in the middle of it all. When this project was first announced, I was nervous that it was going to be a cash grab — especially considering how amazing the previous trilogy was. To my surprise, the direction that they took this story fascinated me. It highlights a lot of elements from the past, while also paving its own way towards a new and unique future. The characters each have their own intricacies, and I appreciated how they weren't all just one-toned. Overall, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a terrific sequel, and one that keeps this franchise going strong. While it's 145 minutes long, I didn't feel that length at all. The storytelling, performances, cinematography and action kept me engaged throughout the entire runtime.
