The Plant of the Month for November is: Taxodium mucronatum – Montezuma cypress, Mexican swamp cypress, ahuehuete, sabino The Montezuma cypress is the national tree of Mexico and makes a majestic addition to the garden with its wide buttressing trunk and soft foliage. This species is semi-deciduous to evergreen in Santa Barbara and the old foliage will turn orange-brown and drop as the new leaves emerge. The flat leaves (needles) are arranged pinnately or bi-pinnately on small deciduous branchlets that undergo cladoptosis (regular branch shedding), usually in the dry season in habitat. The tree develops a broad spreading crown and horizontal branches with age. T. mucronatum is a conifer and produces separate pollen cones (male) and seed cones (female) on the same plant. This species has been known to develop understated cypress “knees” but only in areas with a high water table. The native range of T. mucronatum extends from south Texas to Guatemala and it occurs on riverbanks and in arid canyons with seasonal surface water and access to underground springs. It does not typically grow in standing water or swamps like other Taxodium. It is hardy to USDA Zone 8 but will experience some dieback with frost. The genus Taxodium is comprised of one to three species, depending on which taxonomic authority is referenced, and T. mucronatum is sometimes listed as T. distichum v. mexicanum or T. huegelii. Because Taxodium are wind-pollinated, hybrids can occur in places of overlap. The genus name comes from the Latin, taxus (yew), and the Greek, eidos (similar to). The specific epithet comes from the Latin, mucro (sharp point), referencing the pointed needles of this species. The ahuehuete (Nahuatl for “old man on the water”) aka Taxodium mucronatum, sabino or Montezuma cypress, has ancient beginnings that predate its namesake ‘Montezuma’—the ruler of the Aztec Empire who had the trees planted in abundance in today’s Mexico City. While these trees once lined the banks of the Rio Grande Valley in abundance, mid-19th Century colonization of this region led to their decimation, and Brownsville, Texas is now home to the largest population of native-growth Montezuma Cypress trees to be found within the continental United States. Gracias to Brownsville historian and arbor conservation activist Eugene Hernandez for advocating on behalf of the sale of the historic cypress tract on the Jagou Plantation to the City of Brownsville and successfully petitioning for the Montezuma cypress to become its official tree in 2014, for assuring that the Texas Department of Transportation purchase 12 mature trees after its workers cut down two that had been planted in the 1920s, and for advocating for the name of the old-growth site to be called “Montezuma Cypress Preserve.” Gracias to the RGV No Border Wall Movement @rgvnoborderwall for raising awareness about the detrimental impact of the border wall on native habitat by engaging in collective action to care for one of our ancestor’s tree believed to be the oldest in South Texas. At over 900 years old, this noble tree suffered the disruption of its sensitive ecosystem with the border wall construction of 2019. Thanks also to The Nature Conservancy in Texas, that has partnered with UTRGV to germinate and grow these important native trees that will help restore and link together the natural and cultural history the Rio Grande Valley. A few weeks ago this Cypress Tree painting was installed in the lobby of the Griffith Law Group in McAllen, TX. I was in the midst of painting flowers and battling a sinus infection, then a scratched cornea, and didn’t get around to posting till just now. I couldn’t be more pleased to see this great big commission finally up! I’ve visited, painted, and sketched this 900+ year old Montezuma Cypress many times over the past 5 years, but this 10 foot tall oil on linen is by far my favorite.
