TREE DEATHS DUE TO DROUGHT: In Hobart where we live, we have been witnessing the slow death of our forests. Our home town has had the third driest summer since records began, and this has caused numerous trees to die. Unfortunately due to climate change, this not just happening in Tasmania, but in other parts of Australia and the world as well. We have been doing what we can to educate people about these tree deaths and have been working with the ABC on this excellent story, as well as doing radio interviews. Drought events like this are going to be more and more common with climate breakdown, so it's absolutely crucial that we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We have also been working with the fantastic Prof Tim Brodribb, assisting him with tree climbing to help him measure the drought stress of giant trees. This research provides important knowledge on how trees respond to drought. It is said that this tree inspired Totoro’s home from the animation, My Neighbor Totoro. Tucked nearly out of sight at the base of the tree is a small shrine dedicated to Tenjin, the god of the sky.
