Japan is an island nation with the ocean playing an enormous part in its culture, society, art, and history. The sea provides a rich abundance of fish and seafood and is life-giving to the people. •The principles of Daoism. The Chinese philosophy that emphasizes naturalness, simplicity, compassion, humility, and self cultivation. Two magatamas together resemble Daoism’s Yin Yang symbol; the belief that everything is made up of dual and opposite energies, working together to create balance. Balance that is necessary for personal growth and spiritual evolution. Today magatama are worn as fashionable accessories, and used as talismans to protect one’s health, bring in good fortune, and keep evil away. It is clear that these stones are potent. Powerful in the way the ancient Japanese regarded them. Magatama can be seen to be a connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. On a personal level, they get us thinking about our physical self and spiritual nature. They offer us a richer understanding of ourselves and the world around us. The importance of reverence for all living things and for the universe. This last photo is of Tamatsukuri Inari Shrine, founded in 12 B.C.E. Two big stones columns stand with a sacred Shinto rope strung across them. Magatama 勾玉 曲玉 Part 2 of 3. Why are magatama shaped the way they are? There are no definitive explanations. Scholars and historians however have put forth a number of theories. Magatama may have been fashioned after: •Animal teeth or fangs. Ancient cultures all over the world have revered animals, and have looked to them for strength, courage, and protection. •A fetus. A stage of life that involves the nurturing of something precious and miraculous. The fetus represents an idea, a concept, a path that is waiting to be birthed. Some belief systems state that the soul enters the body at this time. It can also return back to its source depending on the circumstances. •The shape of the soul. Prehistoric art in Japan depicts the free floating soul as being round at one end and with a tail. Having a soul in physical form could aid in worship, and provide a comforting connection with the departed and ancestors. Shamans used magatamas to communicate with spirits and act as mediums. •The sun and moon. The round part of the magatama is said to represent the sun, while the tail is the moon. The stones may have honored the dual powers of these cosmic forces, the phases of life, the passage of time, the vastness of the universe. •The kidney. In Eastern spiritual practices, the kidneys are where chi, pure energy, is stored. The organs - associated with water - flush out toxins from the body and keep chi flowing freely for good health. Magatama 勾玉 曲玉 Part 1 of 3. The magical, mystical Magatama. Kooza is at Tamatsukuri Inari Shrine in Osaka. The name of the shrine comes from the Tamatsukuribe family (4th-5th century) who lived in the area and made the decorative gems known as Magatama. Apparently they were the first to mass produce them in Japan. The prehistoric comma-shaped jewels are steeped in history and mystery. “Maga” means curved, “tama” means precious stone. Magatama are believed to have originated in Korea and Southern Manchuria. They first appeared in Japan in the late Jomon period (1000–300 BCE) and through the Kofun period (300 to 538 AD). In the beginning they were made from simple materials like stone, clay, and quartz, and were used as personal ornaments. Women wore them in their hair and as bracelets. Over time, they became more refined and sophisticated with magatama made from agate and jade, and used as ceremonial and funerary objects. They were attached to swords, mirrors, and sacred bows and placed in temples, shrines, and tombs. Magatama are strongly associated with the sun and the divine. They appear in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, Japan’s oldest chronicles written in the 8th century. In one story, Amaterasu, the sun goddess, bites off and spits out magatama pieces that transform into deities. In another tale, she hides herself in a cave, and is lured out with magatama and other objects that captivate her. The most famous magatama is the Yasakani no Magatama. It is one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, along with the sword (kusanagi) and the mirror (yata no kagami). According to legend, this magatama was given to Amaterasu from her father Izanagi, creator of the Japanese archipelago, and passed down to the Imperial line. Slice your pork belly, cabbage and green pepper. Mince the garlic. 2. Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the garlic, pork and chilli paste - fry for 5 minutes. 3. Next add the cabbage and pepper to the pan and cook for a further 4 minutes. 4. Add your miso and soy sauce to the pan with a tablespoon of water. Mix thoroughly. 5.
