What cosmic forces are at play? Days after my inimitable father left this world (8/2/2023) — which happened to occur a year to the day after my mother left this world (8/2/22) — the used metal fishing skiff they gave me 18 years ago as a wedding gift began to take on water and sink. Today, I opened a beautiful condolence gift sent by my friend and editor Lauren Wein (who I described in “Little Monsters” acknowledgments as the person who “always sends the just-right poem when I need it most”) to find Lucille Clifton’s beautiful poetry collection “Blessing the Boats.” The title poem happens to be on page 82 (8/2)!! blessing the boats may the tide that is entering even now the lip of our understanding carry you out beyond the face of fear may you kiss the wind then turn from it certain that it will love you back may you open your eyes to water water waving forever and may you in your innocence sail through this to that #rip #poetry #lucilleclifton blessingtheboats

Today, I’m reading sections of Lucille Clifton’s The Book of Light and I wanted to share two poems I believe are especially pertinent considering the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The first poem is called “move” and the second poem is called “samson predicts from gaza the philadelphia fire.” — I support a free Palestine and an end to genocide. I also believe that poetry has the ability to heal us, show us, remind us of where we’ve been and where we’re going. A particular line from “move” feels especially resonant: “if you would stand fire rather than difference/do not hesitate/move/away.” — This book was written/published in 1993. And still. Something to consider. — #poetry #thebookoflight #lucilleclifton #freepalestine #gaza #writing #history #storytelling #storyteller #poems #art #reflections #healing #energy #quotes

There is a Girl Inside by Lucille Clifton there is a girl inside. she is randy as a wolf. she will not walk away and leave these bones to an old woman. she is a green tree in a forest of kindling. she is a green girl in a used poet. she has waited patient as a nun for the second coming, when she can break through gray hairs into blossom and her lovers will harvest honey and thyme and the woods will be wild with the damn wonder of it. #lucilleclifton #poetry #spring #mayday #ageing #innerchild #keepgrowing #lifeisajourney #bluebells

Lucille Clifton, An Ordinary Woman (1975) Pictured here on a green and red blanket. Swipe to read one of my favorite poems, New Bones. Text in pinned comment. I read this book in one sitting; I could not stop reading it. Clifton’s rhythm is incredible. It not only carried me through each poem, but from poem to poem. I don’t know how to describe the way she plays with language—it’s music but more than music. There’s something both simple and magical in the way she repeats lines and phrases and words, the way she builds images and breaks them apart and then builds them again. She rarely uses punctuation and capitalization, which creates a space in the poems that feels like a river. I’ve been thinking a lot about poetic language, about what it means to have one. This collection has a clear and singular poetic language. The poems feel honey and warm and ocean-drenched; they feel like soil and earth, rooted and warm. They’re shapes without sharp edges, they’re all dripping flow and smooth and glide. Roundness, yes, that’s what they feel like—like phases of the moon, waning and waxing, but underneath, always whole. Clifton writes about Blackness and being a woman. She writes little odes to her friends. She writes about aging and becoming and parenting, about magic, about healing and new beginnings and being strong and getting through hard stuff. There are spells in this book, and so much light, and tiny domestic moments, and running through it all, love. She pours love onto the page in a thousand different ways—love for her people and herself and her flaws and where she’s been and where she’s going. These poems certainly aren’t simple—the rhythms are intricate and masterful. But they refuse to ignore joy, and that refusal, in poetry, is sometimes interpreted as unserious. It isn’t, of course. It’s just so light, so floating, so buoyant that it breaks out of every container of celebration. It spills. It feels like poetry that’s meant to be passed around, shared. Thanks to @seeceeread for getting me newly excited about Clifton. I am dazzled, I am hungry for more of her words.

In light of this, we are sharing one of Dr. @DenaSimmons’ favorite poems by Lucille Clifton. We invite you to do a self check-in by asking yourself the following questions: – How have I been living my values? It's all in honor of National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry’s important place in our lives and poets’ integral role in our culture. Launched by a nonprofit charitable organization called the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world! This year's National Poetry Month poster features a line of poetry by a former Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Lucille Clifton, and artwork by children's author and illustrator Jack Wong. #librariesofinstagram #bethanylibrary #clarkmemoriallibrary #bookdisplay #childrensroom #teensandtweens #adultcollection #storywalk #april #spring #nationalpoetrymonth #nationalpoetrymonth2024 #poetry #verse #rhymes #poets #academyofamericanpoets #lucilleclifton #jackwong

“…what did i seek to be except myself? i made it up here on this bridge between starshine and clay, my one hand holding tight my other hand; come celebrate with me that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed.” - Lucille Clifton ‘In a Moment of Tenderness’ opens April 11th at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 5th Floor as a part of the @dcpubliclibrary art and exhibit program (April 13-June 9, 2024). Opening reception will be April 11, 2024 at 6:30-8:00PM. Register! I am so happy to be working with @adamodomore and exhibiting beside these talented artists. _|||_ About the Exhibit This group art exhibit is about remembering, reclaiming, retelling, and celebrating wholeness and our journey toward it. The title is inspired by a quote, “In a moment of tenderness, the future seems possible,” from the book Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments by Saidiya Hartman. Defying trends and expectations to represent Blackness in a state of either struggle or jubilation, the works in the exhibit feature modes that allow for and represent tenderness and rest. In this exhibit, the viewer can see that beauty, just like the poetry that makes up our lives, is not a luxury; rather, as Hartman writes, it is a way of “creating possibility in the space of enclosure.” It is found within the quiet miracles that happen every day….. The exhibit offers time and space to escape and to dream up the future outside of any ongoing burdens of life, forming an architecture of Black possibility. 🌎“the earth is a living thing” by Lucille Clifton is a powerful reminder of our connection to the planet. ✍🏾Clifton, a revered black woman writer, poet, and educator, infused her work with passion, politics, and compassion—qualities that resonate deeply with our lab members. As we commemorate Earth month, let us pause to reflect on Clifton’s poignant words and the profound relationship she shared with our planet. April is both Jazz Appreciation Month and Poetry Month. We want to take this opportunity to highlight a handful of African-American jazz musicians and poets who made history in the state of Maryland. Today we honor jazz musicians Chick Webb, Billie Holiday, Albert Dailey, and siblings Blanche & Cab Calloway. We also honor poets Lucille Clifton, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Ntozake Shange, and Pauli Murray. Music and the written arts have been vital in how Black Americans record historical moments, tell stories, and pass the cultural significance of the arts from generation to generation. We are grateful for the jazz musicians and poets of our past, present, and future. #jazzmusic #jazzappreciation #poetrymonth #poetry #chickwebb #billieholiday #albertdailey #blanchecalloway #cabcalloway #lucilleclifton #francesellenwatkins #ntozakeshange #paulimurray #marylandhistory #blackhistory #mdblackhistory
