There's no evidence that involuntary commitment offers long-term benefits, and significant reasons to believe that expanding the practice will cause harm. Policy-makers should follow such models as supportive housing. READ Carl H. In episode two of the "Lost Patients" podcast, journalists from @seattletimes and @KUOW investigate involuntary commitment. Across the U.S., efforts are underway to make it easier to involuntarily commit people to psychiatric hospitals. It's a reaction to the sight of seriously mentally ill people on the streets and the cries of families who say it's too hard to get a loved one help when they're in crisis. But this gets at one of the most delicate questions our society has faced: When does our belief about what's best for someone override someone's right to decide for themselves? Republican Exploitation of Mass Shootings and Demonization of Mental Illness (Part 2) The Supreme Court held vaguely in O’Connor v. Donaldson (1975) that states cannot confine “a non-dangerous individual.” However in a society in which mental illness is so stigmatized and power is abused, nebulous rulings such as this do not protect people from unjust detention. As President, DeSantis would be one such abuser of power; he would institutionalize mentally ill people who pose little threat of violence: “And it’s not [just this]; there are other crimes [including nonviolent crimes] … A lot of the people that end up in the justice system have mental problems and so we’ve not done a good job [preempting] that.” “You have to have responsibility to exercise rights”—the subtext is clear: if you do not present rationally, you may be treated as subhuman. You can’t say that with anything else? Really? What about gun reform? WOMEN WOT SIP. Here is our wine group the other evening – well as many as could gather with life getting in the way of our best intentions. We meet a few times a year, at someone’s house, with a bottle each and some cheese and charcuterie based nibbles. One memorable experimental wine and crisp pairing evening proved Frazzles to be a particular challenge! 🥓 The theme this time, as we held onto the last wind-tossed roses of the year, was “your fave summer wine discovery.” After carefully putting them in ‘light to tub-thumping’ order, we sipped and supped … 🌸 Pecorino, Italy - £8.99, Waitrose. Dry and light; citrus, melon, grassy and white flowers. Perfect for summer afternoon quaffing … in another less full-on life! 🌤 Dragon, Langhe, Italy – about £15, Vivino. After digging we found this unusual aand compelling “field blend” was Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and local variety Nascetta. No wonder we didn’t know how to describe it … ending up with caramel, pear drop, citrus and wet stone!! 🐉 Bourgogne Cote-D’or, France – about £33, Vivino. “That just puts a big smile on my face” says Julia. A big and gorgeous typical Chardonnay; lemon, bread, stone fruit, mineral, and rich butter! 🍋🍞🧀 Involuntary Commitment, Washington, USA - £29.50, @Somersetwineco. Cabernet Franc on the nose, perfumed and juicy, then Cab Sav and Merlot in the mouth, all red and black fruit and soft but firm structure. I loved it … despite a dreadful label! 🇺🇸 And finally .. Charles Tyrand, Cotes du Rhone – bought from his cellar door. “OMG that’s France”! Big and bold – a “night time wine”, from the shadow of Mont Ventoux. Grenache and Syrah with a dab of Cinsault. I shut my eyes and could see hot, big, dry rolling hills. Befitting our last wine! 🇫🇷 What I really love about our group is that we are seriously interested in wine, and pretty knowledgeable too. But we’re also incredibly supportive of each other and our respective trials and tribulations. So, yes I enjoy the wine – but value are more, the nurturing of my heart and soul. ♥️ Thank you gorgeous Women Wot Sip.

I had high hopes for “The Darlings of the Asylum” by Noel O’Reilly. It is well known that, during that era, women were admitted to asylums for all sorts of nonsense reasons, so “Darlings” was historically accurate. Violet narrates the novel, and she’s a spunky and creative character who I adored and rooted for. All of the males in this novel are deplorable, although Violet’s father has a few likable moments, and it is not that surprising that Violet ended up where she did, considering who her compatriots and possible suitors were. The first half of the novel was engaging and entertaining and O’Reilly did a decent job at depicting the female perspective. The latter half of the novel was disappointing, however, and I am not sure if this was a result of O’Reilly trying to write a female perspective or trying to add unnecessary twists. Initially, Violet is admitted to the asylum because she is a female who goes against gender roles and wishes to pursue a career in art. However, as time goes on, Violet is revealed to actually be suffering from a psychiatric disorder, and I was more than a little disappointed. I wanted to cheer for Violet and root for her, but my emotion soon turned to sympathy as the truth was revealed. The novel’s depictions of the horrible indignities suffered by the patients was realistic and heartbreaking and O’Reilly had a great premise to work with, but he dropped the plot quickly with making Violet into a woman who actually suffered from a mental illness. O’Reilly did reclaim the ending though, and I was satisfied with the outcome. #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #noeloreilly #darlingsoftheasylum #readersofinstagram #goodreads #niagarafallspubliclibrary #hqbooks #asylum #insaneasylum #commitment #involuntarycommitment #femaleprotagonist #disassociativeidentitydisorder #betrothed #childhoodfriends #threestars #bookreviewer #bookreview #victorianengland

It’s tempting to see involuntary commitment as an unfortunate but necessary treatment for substance use disorder. The reality is more complicated: forced treatment is often unsuccessful—and worse, it retraumatizes people who have had bad experiences with the carceral system. John C. In a recent podcast episode of @CommittableThePodcast, we learn that a person being involuntarily committed has very few rights and protections through this traumatizing process. Involuntary commitment is a legal process through which an individual can be forcibly detained and treated against their will in a psychiatric hospital. DRM’s Legal Director, Luciene Parsley explains the process for involuntary commitment, who decides if a person should be committed, and what criteria is used in Maryland. “I don't believe forcing people into treatment is going to solve the problem, and there's no way individuals are going to remain in treatment, engage in treatment, if they're forced. What I've seen over and over again, is that peer support and engaging people where they are is our best shot at trying to make sure people stay alive and healthy and not traumatized by the system.” -Luciene Parsley, DRM Legal Director Find the podcast link in @CommittableThePodcast bio. #Podcast #InvoluntaryCommitment #DisabilitySupport

Featured Science News: Areas With Low Rates of Involuntary Commitments Do Not See More Adverse Events A Norwegian study finds that areas that do not frequently utilize involuntary commitments on psychiatric patients do not show more patients harms. Link in our bio to read the entire article. Involuntary commitment in psychiatry is typically justified by the argument that it is necessary to keep people from harming themselves or others. However, the results of a new study out of Norway published in BMC Psychiatry in February 2023 undermine this assumption. The Norwegian authors Olav Nyttingnes, Jūratė Šaltytė Benth, Tore Hofstad, and Jorun Rugkåsa write: “The assumption that involuntary care protects patients from negative outcomes is not supported by our findings, but neither can it be ruled out…this raises the concern that involuntary care may not work entirely as intended by lawmakers and clinicians. This might be because predicting suicides and other rare events are notoriously difficult. We know that previously committed patients have a greater likelihood of later involuntary care, which may maintain the patterns of involuntary care without fully taking into account the patient’s symptoms or risks.” “Given the concerns voiced by user organizations, the ethical concern surrounding the provision of treatment without a person’s consent, and over geographical variations in such treatment, there is an urgent need for additional studies that test core assumptions of mental health acts.” #Involuntarycommitment #mentalhealthlaw #psychiatry

Podcast at https://www.spreaker.com/episode/52731007 ReThreading Madness presents Part 2 of our interview with Rob Wipond about his book Your Consent is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatment, and Abusive Guardianships. Bernadine and Rob discuss (among other things) how the psychiatric industry is being used to punish whistleblowers, political advocates, and within our daily lives with disgruntled employers and unhappy spouses. A mental health wellness call can too easily result in involuntary commitments and being drugged even for the sanist among us. And, then that commitment however wrong becomes a stain on the person's record and can impact him long after. From press release: "There's a common misconception that, due to asylum closures, only 'dangerous' people get committed now. But forced psychiatric interventions today occur in thousands of public and private hospitals, and also in group and long-term care facilities, troubled-teen and residential treatment centres, and even in people's own homes under outpatient commitment orders. Intended to 'help', for many people the experiences are terrifying, traumatizing, and permanently damaging." Rob's research demonstrates not only the ways in which these forced detentions are the equivalent to torture, that there is no research demonstrating that they are helpful, and that they are indeed on the rise. Bernadine and Rob list the ways in which you can protect yourself from a forced detention and, if it happens, how to help yourself get discharged. https://www.facebook.com/rob.wipond #mentalhealth #psychiatricsurvivor #involuntarycommitment #forcedtreatment #antipsychotics #consent

#Repost ///@vesper_j_moore: We are seeing involuntary commitment legislation pop-up all over the United States right now. It is important to take a public stance that involuntary commitment is not the solution to the issue of houselessness in the United States. The real issue is the way we see and think of unhoused people, the mad, the disabled. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities guidelines on deinstitutionalization including in emergency situations clearly states that: “Institutionalization contradicts the right of persons with disabilities to live independently and be included in the community.” “Institutionalization is a discriminatory practice against persons with disabilities, contrary to article 5 of the Convention. It involves de facto denial of the legal capacity of persons with disabilities, in breach of article 12. It constitutes detention and deprivation of liberty based on impairment, contrary to article 14. States parties should recognize institutionalization as a form of violence against persons with disabilities.” Full CRPD Guidelines in bio link. These guidelines are in place for a reason. Deinstitutionalization happened because it is ableist and sanist to assume people are “mentally ill” and institutionalize them en masse. I implore all states to invest in comprehensive voluntary non-carceral (non-punitive) community mental health responses. [image description: a screenshot of a tweet that reads “Deinstitutionalization didn't cause the crisis of houseless people we see today. And re-institutionalization won't fix that issue. Disappearing mad disabled people is a sanism issue we need to name and fight against as a society.”] #MentalHealth #Mad #MadPride #MentalHealthAwareness #disabled #Disability #CRPD #OrgulloLoco #MentalWellbeing #MentalWellness #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityRights #MentalIllness #PsychosocialDisability #FreeBritney #InvoluntaryCommitment #Psychiatric #PsychiatricSurvivors #Psych #Neurodivergent #Neurodiversity #Autism #Autistic #ADHD #AuDHD #PsychAbolition #Prison #PrisonAbolition

My book will be released Jan. 24, 2023. Asylums are supposed to be in the past. However, though the buildings were closed, many of the practices lived on. In fact, more law-abiding Americans today are being involuntarily committed and forcibly treated “for their own good” than at any time in history. In the first work of investigative journalism in decades to give a comprehensive view into contemporary psychiatric incarceration and forced interventions, Your Consent Is Not Required exposes how rising numbers of people from many walks of life are being subjected against their will to surveillance, indefinite detention, and powerful tranquilizing drugs, restraints, seclusion, and electroshock. There’s a common misconception that, due to asylum closures, only “dangerous” people get committed now. But forced psychiatric interventions today occur in thousands of public and private hospitals, and also in group and long-term care facilities, troubled-teen and residential treatment centers, and even in people’s own homes under outpatient commitment orders. Intended to “help,” for many people the experiences are terrifying, traumatizing, and permanently damaging. Driven partly by individuals’ genuine concerns for the “mental health” of others, and partly by institutions entangled with goals of power, profit, and social control, psychiatric coercion is increasingly used to: ● Manage school children and the elderly ● Quell family conflicts ● Police the streets ● Control people in shelters, community living, and prisons ● Fraudulently increase hospital profits ● “Resolve” workplace disagreements ● Detain protesters and discredit whistleblowers Thoroughly researched, with alarming true stories and hard data from the US and Canada, Rob Wipond’s Your Consent Is Not Required builds an unassailable case for greater transparency, vigilance, and change. https://benbellabooks.com/shop/your-consent-is-not-required/ #psychiatricward #involuntarycommitment #coercionisnotconsent #coercivecontrol

🥈My love for “second labels“ is well documented. Why not? Often these are phenomenal wines that serve two purposes. For the winery, it offers more exposure and access to wines that can be released sooner from vines that generally are a bit younger. For the consumer, if you shop the right second labels, you’re often getting the same quality control and pedigree from vineyard sites as you would in their reserved tier for half or a third of the price. For me it’s in a no brainer. It’s a great peak into what the wineries offer; and if you really love the entry level, forking over a little bit more for the reserve bottle can be more justified. Washington state is on fire right now with Bordeaux varietals. Even better when you can get a fantastic second label from one of the top-tier producers. 😉 . . . 🧐Want to find out more about second labels? There are more in the market then you might think. The push for “deinstitutionalization,” which closed state psychiatric hospitals with the worthy goal of transferring patients to community group homes (which never happened), has utterly failed. It failed three decades ago and its impact is now worse than ever. Most of the mentally ill patients (some are veterans who served our country!!) were turned out to the streets, or are now in jails or prisons. We need new facilities — safe, secure, humane, with camera surveillance to ensure no abuse — to help these patients get healthy again, and to protect the public until they do. The “danger to oneself or others” standard for involuntary commitment needs to be reinterpreted. Chronic living on the street is dangerous to one’s health and life. Well-meaning “homeless advocates” and misguided mayors who resist such essential policy changes are doing much more harm than good, creating a revolving door between the streets and the jails and working against truly helping many alcoholic, psychotic or drug-addicted people from ever getting the help they need. Anyone interested in a fuller understanding of how our cities have totally botched their approach to mental ILLNESS should read this book. #insaneconsequences #mentalillness #psychosis #alcoholism #PTSD #drugaddiction #psychiatrist #involuntarycommitment #nyc @mentalillnesspolicy #djjaffe
