I took this photo almost 1 year ago. It reminds me of one of my most favorite poems. Dark Pines Under Water This land like a mirror turns you inward And you become a forest in a furtive lake; The dark pines of your mind reach downward, You dream in the green of your time, Your memory is a row of sinking pines. Explorer, you tell yourself this is not what you came for Although it is good here, and green; You had meant to move with a kind of largeness, You had planned a heavy grace, an anguished dream. But the dark pines of your mind dip deeper And you are sinking, sinking, sleeper In an elementary world; There is something down there, and you want it told. — 'Dark Pines Under Water' by Gwendolyn MacEwen #darkpinesunderwater #poetry #photographtandpoetry #gwendolynmacewen #naturephotography #dusk

The Shadowmaker Gwendolyn MacEwen was a celebrated Canadian writer. Referenced as “the last of the bardic poets’ by Michael Ondaantje, MacEwen was born in Toronto in 1941. She published her first poem in the Canadian Forum at age 17, and her first poetry collection, titled The Drunken Clock, by the age of 20. By 1967, she was awarded the Governor General’s Award for Writing for her poetry collection, The Shadowmaker. MacEwen produced work rich in symbolism and metaphor, imbued with all that is mystical and occult. She was particularly fascinated by themes in Egyptian and Greek mythology, writing several novels on topics playing with qualities of magic, history, and hermetic philosophies. Teaching herself Hebrew, Arabic, French, and Greek, she eventually translated the Aristophanes play, The Birds, from Greek to English amidst a relationship with Greek writer Yiannis Ritsos. Emerging in history at the height of Second Wave Feminism, MacEwen rose to be one of Canada’s few femme poets to reach celebrity. Writing everything from novels, to poetry, to children’s books, her work often appeared alongside the likeness of fellow Canadian writers such as Leonard Cohen and Margret Atwood, whom she not only shared the skill of the craft with but also an expansive friendship. In Atwood’s 1990 short story Isis in Darkness, the poet Selena is based on MacEwen. Parallel her influence, MacEwen battled alcoholism her whole life. Plagued by the very forces which illustrate her writing so boldly, her prolific career was cut short in 1987 at the age of 46. While it is speculated she died of alcoholism, some alleged she had committed suicide. Physically escaping the suffering she wrote so sincerely of on this plane, her voice has been preserved. MacEwen’s savvy utilization of early recording techniques have made her spoken word widely available online, immortalizing her haunting prose. Recordings of hers can be found to this day, MacEwen speaking in an airy hush, whispering of forces few are privy to personal acquaintance with. Her writing remains as one of Canada’s most precious literary gems. ⭐️ Based on an assignment I completed for Library and Archives Canada

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen This is your captain speaking. We are flying at an unknown altitude And an incalculable speed The temperature outside is beyond words. If you look out your window you will see Many ruined cities and enduring seas But if you wish to sleep please close your blinds. My navigator has been ill for many years And we are on Automatic Pilot; regrettably I cannot foresee our ultimate destination. Have a pleasant trip. You may smoke, you may drink, you may dance You may die. We may even land oneday. ~ "Flight One", by #gwendolynmacewen #poetry

Leaving Montreal after too brief a visit, my first in four years, nostalgia laced and bountiful. The find of the trip this copy of Gwendolyn MacEwen’s second pamphlet, ‘The Drunken Clock,’ published by her own Aleph Press in 1961. Though an ex-library copy usually seems tarnished. I love the mark that this was once part of the NFB’s reference collection. MacEwen’s twisting gnostic tinged poetry—with its difficult rhythms, archaeological mysticism, uneven lines, and arcane obsessions—remains for me a singular product of Canadian modernism. She well deserves a careful collected poems, and a generous historical reading which positions her both alongside her peers (Dorothy Livesay, Margaret Avison, Jay MacPherson, Phyllis Webb, perhaps) and the wider context of world poetics and eccentric modernisms. There’s an odd little park dedicated to her in Toronto, complete with a bust, just north of Bloor near BMV books, a favourite place to linger when I walk the city. All appreciation to @wordbookstore for this find, alongside others. Adrian King-Edwards is one of the most astute and generous booksellers I know, and I think fondly of my time working for him often—my first move into the world of antiquarian and rare bookselling and collecting. #gwendolynmacewen #nationalfilmboard #canadianmodernism

Death The Grand Dance I promised I would never turn you into poetry, but Allow this liar these wilful, wicked lines. I am simply trying to track you down In preworlds and afterworlds And the present myriad inner worlds Which whirl around in the carousel of space. I hurl breathless poems against my lord Death, Send these words, these words Careening into the beautiful darkness. And where do all the words go? They say that somewhere out there in space Every word uttered by man Since the beginning of man Is still sounding. Afterthoughts, Lethal gossip of the spheres. Dance then, dance in the city streets, Your body a fierce illusion of flesh, of energy, The particles of light cast off from your hair Illumine you for this moment only. Your afterimage claims the air And every moment is Apocalypse— Avatar, deathless Anarchy. ~Gwendolyn MacEwen . #gwendolynmacewen #thegranddance #tarot #art #goldenklimt #cardoftheday #death #scorpio #scorpioseason #poemoftheday #poem #poetry #writing #ghosts #innerworld #otherworld #afterworld #grief #mourning #thismoment

Gwendolyn MacEwen. A Breakfast for Barbarians. Toronto: The Ryerson Press, 1966. This actually a 1967 reprinting of the 1966 book, with a dust jacket in truly awful shape. But there is a charm in it. Perhaps it was poorly cared for, or perhaps pulled down from the shelf again and again, eventually landing in this state. The cover photograph by J. M. Reynolds has MacEwen looking into a mirror, reflecting the front cover on the back. The flap includes a few paragraphs by the poet on her book, some of which is excerpted from the poet’s introduction. There is also an extensive list of magazine credits, running from Canadian little magazines like Tamarack to major American publications like The Atlantic Monthly. #gwendolynmacewen #theryersonpress
