I recently got to meet former NFL player, Derrick Coleman, who is now the assistant to Player Engagement for the Green Bay Packers! Derrick is profoundly deaf in both ears and was the NFL's first deaf offensive player. He spoke of how he pushed through barriers to play for the Seattle Seahawks, taking them to the Super Bowl. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons and the Arizona Cardinals. How does he do it? He figures out what he needs to push past his barriers, he tells people of his needs, and he doesn't let anything stop him. A great message for all of us! #DeafAwareness #DeafEd #DeafEducator #TeachersOfInstagram #hearingloss #deafed #deafeducation #teacherofthedeaf #hearingaids #cochlearimplants #accommodations #generaleducation #deafawareness #mainstream #tod #deafhardofhearing #todtips #dhh #deaflove #LanguageFirst #itinerant #itinerantteacher #DerrickColeman. #GreenBayPackers #NoBarriers #advocate. #NFL

Georgia has been witnessing weeks of intensifying protests in response to the ruling political party, the Georgian Dream’s, attempt to reintroduce the controversial ‘foreign agents’ bill, dubbed as the ‘Russian Law’ by its critics. The bill mandates organizations receiving at least 20% of their funding from outside Georgia to label themselves as ‘carrying the interests of a foreign power.’ Initially proposed in March 2023, the bill was withdrawn due to mass protests, with a promise by the prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, for the bill to never be reviewed again. However, it was reintroduced in April 2024, with minor alterations, and the ruling party, holding parliamentary majority, passed the bill through two out of three hearings, with the final scheduled for May 17th. The revival of the law sparked the resurgence of mass protests across Georgia and caused condemnation from the EU, the U.S. and the UN. The government’s use of disproportionate brute force and arbitrary arrests of peaceful demonstrators, have been criticized by the civil society and foreign officials. The U.S. Department of State remarked on May 1st, 2024 that Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations are at risk due to the legislation and the anti-Western rhetoric of Georgian Dream. They emphasized that, ‘It is crucial for authorities to permit peaceful demonstrators to uphold their freedom of expression.’ In recent years, protesting has become a crucial duty for Georgians. However, the country’s struggle for independence is deeply rooted in its history, marked by centuries of resistance against various oppressors, including the Mongols, Ottomans, Iran and predominantly Russia. Despite re-gaining independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the battle for democracy has persisted. Swipe for a timeline of Georgia’s fight for freedom, and a breakdown of recent events. 🖋️: @nanuka.jorjadze @giorginaishvili @sonisoni___soni @2440u 🖌️: @2440u P.S. All 👏 means 👏 all 👏 ALL students are general education students FIRST and special education services are supplementary. Special education is NOT a place. Using language such as, “in SPED”, “SPED kids”, “those kids”, etc. is harmful. To maintain the framework and validity of inclusionary practices, it is imperative that ALL students, regardless of disability, are assigned a general education teacher and have as much access to meaningful general education academic and social/emotional opportunities as possible. . . . #allmeansall #generaleducation #specialeducation #inclusionary #practices #meaningful #learningopportunities

What’s the issue with finding joy? - Congolese Sapeur culture ‘Le Congolais a la Sape dans le sang et une créativité qui fait marier les couleurs’ Eric, a Sapeur and fashion creator in Brazzaville, says Sape culture and creativity is part of Congolese blood. Similar to the widely-known ballroom culture from New York City, La Sape is a fashion subculture where people meet to watch each other strut. It’s all about the gatherings — filled with nods to cultural icons, music, friendly competition, and celebration of beauty. With both of these movements having emerged from poverty and disenfranchisement, what’s the issue with finding joy? I question whether anyone should debate the ethics of Sapeurs. We should think twice before disputing their lifestyle — debating the ethics of a cultural movement sprung from deprivation is a marker of privilege in itself. The quest for joy should not be undermined! Self-expression is not just a luxury reserved for those in industrialized nations, but a vital aspect of resilience in the face of suffering. Sapeurs clothes allow them to take control of their narrative and transcend the mere survival that is expected of them. Maya Angelou’s ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ reflects on this phenomenon – she suggests that people like this are not just chasing materialism but are using their resourcefulness and agency to incorporate elements of “the good life” into their own. So, the Sapeur not only copes with his immediate circumstances, but also brings symbols of prosperity, resilience, and inspiration to his community. The Sapeur culture started as an emulation of colonists from France and the UK, but is now a sort of satirical rejection of colonialism. Whether or not it’s true that the myth of African misery can be solved through style, the possibility to dream and fantasize breeds hope, which we all know is always a catalyst for change. 🎉🧑‍🎓[Ms Janet Fong: When art and the community interact]📑🧑‍🏫 🏫How to inspire students to drive positive change in their community through visual arts? How to encourage students from different disciplines to work together on an art project? How to incorporate immersive technologies in visual arts education? 📚 📓These are the questions Ms Janet Fong, Research Assistant Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts under the School of Creative Arts, seeks to address through her General Education capstone course “Art and the Community”. In this experiential learning course, Ms Fong guides students to learn about the role of art in promoting changes within the community, collaborate with partnering organisations, and engage the public through artistic and design practices. 🎓 💡Since its inception in 2021, the course has involved about 100 students, reaching nearly 10,000 people around the world through student-led community art projects. Besides showcasing their creative work in the virtual world, students have also curated physical exhibitions and conducted community art workshops in event spaces provided by the University’s collaborative partners, including the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the arts organisation HART. This provides students with networking opportunities with art groups and valuable experiences in organising exhibitions and workshops, thus fostering sustainability in the art community.🧑‍🤝‍🧑 🧑‍💻 Ms Fong’s openness to using new methodologies has brought her ahead of the curve in developing innovative teaching approaches. She has recently won the 2023/24 General Education Teaching Award (Early Career), which recognises faculty members’ outstanding performance in teaching General Education courses. 🎊 #ge #GEhkbu #HKBU #浸大 #student #generaleducation #artandthecommunity #visualartseducation #highereducation #communityart #teachingandlearning

😸My second time to deliver a short talk on Scotch whisky tasting (well, literally just talking without actual tasting) during a lecture of a general education course. Many thanks to Joe, the course instructor, for having me again. Photo credits go to Steve @cshoooi , the course tutor. I’m very grateful to all the students who responded to my questionnaire, attended my talk, and asked very thoughtful questions. Their participation made the whole thing more interesting and rewarding. I hope they feel the same. .

April is Autism Acceptance Month! Here are some ways to support Autistic people this April and throughout the year: - Listen to Autistic people, share their stories, and consume media by #ActuallyAutistic people. - Follow Autistic-led organizations, like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network, and Yellow Ladybugs, to just name a few. - Autism is diverse and intersectional. Support and listen to Autistic people with varying identities. - Autistic people are all different. Just like allistic people (non-Autistic people), Autistic people have varying strengths, interests, experiences, and support needs. - Accept and support all forms of communication. Speech is just one way to communicate. - Create inclusive and accessible spaces, considering anxiety, executive functioning, language, routine, sensory, and other support needs. - Use strength-based language instead of deficit-based, and avoid the use of functioning labels (e.g., low- and high- functioning). Also, honor and accept Autistic people’s interests, even if some people consider them age-inappropriate. - Many Autistic people prefer the infinity symbol over the puzzle piece because it’s often associated with infantilization and a missing piece of someone’s brain. But, some people feel like they have to use the puzzle piece for safety reasons to communicate their disability and access needs to community members. Image descriptions: A ten-picture post titled, How to support Autistic people this April and throughout the year. On each graphic, there’s a blue wavy abstract design in the background with a centered orange text box. The sources are listed on the last page, located in the comments.
